Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queen's and Canada Co-education, so far as university life in Canada is con cerned, began in Queen's. Women were admitted, to begin with, to the Faculty of Arts. The question then arose why they should not be allowed to study Medicine. The thing had not hitherto been done in Canada, but it was done here. The very novelty of the scheme attracted a singularly able group of women. There were, however, difficulties not a few in the carry ing on of a medical school for men and women where the schoolitself was small. Consequently, when the University of Toronto opened the doors of its medical faculty to women, Queen's decided to restrict its work in this field to men. The Extra-mural system, which has been of such benefit to teachers throughout the Dominion, began almost by accident. Students with the long summer vacation before them used to ask their professors for guidance in their reading. Gradually this counsel came to be increasingly important till the question arose, as to whether credit might not be given for such reading provided the student possessed the necessary academic require ments for entering upon a course of university study, followed the University curriculum in his reading, and passed the same examinations as the student attending the classes in Queen's. The idea was not in itself new. London University had shown the Way. But the conditions in Canada made the problem largely new, and the regulations governing it have been modified con siderably as the result of the long years of trial. The system, however, has been of the greatest value to the Dominion. Every where one meets men in high positions in the educational world who received their opportunity through the Extra-mural system. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in Canada In the following pages will be found some contributions towards the history of Canada and of the manners and customs of its inhabitants during the hundred years beginning October 5th, 1792. On that date my ancestor, Roger Conant, a graduate of Yale University, and a Massachusetts landowner, set foot on Canadian soil as a United Empire Loyalist. From him and from his descendants - handed down from father to son - there have come to me certain historical particulars which I regard as a trust and which I herewith give to the public. I am of the opinion that it is in such plain and unvarnished statements that future historians of our country will find their best materials, and I therefore feel constrained to do my share towards the task of supplying them. The population of Canada is but five and one-third millions, but who can tell what it will be in a few decades? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada and Sea Power One of the grave questions now before us is, What is the duty of Canada to the world upon the sea? Soon - perhaps all too soon - the thoughts of the people will descend from the realm of airy speculation and become incarnated into national action. It is a fearful thing to think that the course steered by Canada in this sea of doubt may mean the downfall of Empires. Or our ship of state may be a pilot leading other nations into yet uncharted but less troubled waters. If ever there was a time when we should ask Him, to whom the sovereignty of the sea belongs, for wisdom and open-mindedness, that time is now. We shall do well if we first empty ourselves of our prejudice in order that enough of this wisdom may flow in to lead us to a safe decision. Every lover of his country should seek to get at this truth at whatever cost to national pride. It is thus that we may serve the best interests of the world, for the British Empire is not worth preserv ing unless it is a faithful trustee for a better ordered civilization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Autumn Holiday in the United States and Canada To those who seek to spend a holiday beyond our own shores, the Continent of Europe has hitherto had the chief attractions. Its Norwegian Fiords, its glorious Alps, its ancient cities, and the calm retreats on the blue Mediterranean, are deserved favourites. But the American Continent has claims peculiarly its own. It is not without its grand and varied scenery; and its history, if modern, is marvellous, not in the records and wars of princes, but in the signs of the progress of a great people. It has, indeed, here and there, footprints of the past - marks of earnest and successful struggles for liberty - but the present sons of the soil are constantly achieving conquests by the ploughshare, the mining pick, and the mechanic's hammer, whose traces may be found everywhere. They are famous for valuable discoveries and inventions, and important schemes for social and religious advancement. They are already rich in the memory of illustrious men, and have among the living many of the excellent of the earth. The colonization of their vast territories excels, in extent and romantic interest, any in the history of the world. The immigrants are from all nations, yet the prevailing influence and welding power are those of our own race, language, and religion. In their institutions we may see the fruits - often the riper fruits - of our own earlier civilization. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Finding New Homes in Canada DO you ever wish that you had lived long, long ago? Do you sometimes think, when you are on your way to school, that it would be fun to talk to a boy or girl who went to school in Canada a hundred or two hundred, or even three hundred years ago? What would you say to them, and what would they say to you? You would show them your school books, and perhaps you would try to read out of theirs. Yes, I think it would be fun, and a very good education for you, too. Perhaps sometimes when you have been on a hike you have come to a hill-top and have looked down from it at a pretty farmyard below, a house of white frame or stone, a barn with a pitch roof and an Orchard all darkly green and' white in the warm spring sun. And as you have looked, you have wondered whose home it first was. Did boys and girls live there hundreds of years ago? Surely they must have. Or perhaps on your summer holidays you have found a woodland path with shrubs and bushes overhanging it, and, as you have picked your way along it, you have pretended that you were a Canadian pioneer going along a blazed trail to your first Canadian home.
