Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal accounts for approximately one quarter of world energy consumption and of the coal produced worldwide approximately 65% is shipped to electricity producers and 33% to industrial consumers, with most of the remainder going to consumers in the residential and commercial sectors. The total share of total world energy consumption by coal is expected to increase to almost 30% in 2035. This book describes the challenges and steps by which electricity is produced form coal and deals with the challenges for removing the environmental objections to the use of coal in future power plants. New technologies are described that could virtually eliminate the sulfur, nitrogen, and mercury pollutants that are released when coal is burned for electricity generation. In addition, technologies for the capture greenhouse gases emitted from coal-fired power plants are described and the means of preventing such emissions from contributing to global warming concerns. Written by one of the world’s leading energy experts, this volume is a must-have for any engineer, scientist, or student working in this field, providing a valuable reference and guide in a quickly changing field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text describes water's use in the production of raw fuels, as an energy carrier (e.g., hot water and steam), and as a reactant, reaction medium, and catalyst for the conversion of raw fuels to synthetic fuels. It explains how supercritical water is used to convert fossil- and bio-based feedstock to synthetic fuels in the presence and absence of a catalyst. It also explores water as a direct source of energy and fuel, such as hydrogen from water dissociation, methane from water-based clathrate molecules, and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural Mechanization and Automation is a component of Encyclopedia of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. The mechanization of farming practices throughout the world has revolutionized food production, enabling it to maintain pace with population growth except in some less-developed countries, most notably in Africa. Agricultural mechanization has involved the partial or full replacement of human energy and animal-powered equipment (e.g. plows, seeders and harvesters) by engine-driven equipment. The theme on Agricultural Mechanization and Automation cover six main topics: Technology and Power in Agriculture; Farm Machinery; Facilities and Equipment for Livestock Management; Environmental Monitoring; Recovery and Use of Wastes and by-Products; Slaughtering and Processing of Livestock, which are then expanded into multiple subtopics, each as a chapter. These two volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs.

Book excerpt: Demand for energy and water is increasing as a result of rapid economic, population, and industrial growth. By 2050, it is expected that global energy consumption will nearly double in tandem with world water demand. Because of competing demands for finite resources, existing water and energy systems are limited in their ability to satisfy these expanding needs. Furthermore, rapid population and industrial development inevitably result in the generation of a significant amount of wastewater laden with toxins, persistent inorganic and organic pollutants, and other toxic emissions emitted from different sources. Opportunities and Challenges in Climate-Friendly Clean Water and Energy Technologies presents the most recent technological advancements that are relevant to environmentally friendly methods of producing clean water and a sustainable supply of energy. In order to protect against climate change, it also highlights the most recent empirical research findings in the field of cutting-edge industrial and transportation emission reduction measures. Covering key topics such as renewable energy, wastewater treatment, and biomaterials, this reference work is ideal for environmental scientists, industry professionals, researchers, practitioners, academicians, instructors, and students.

The business practice comes every year closer to the closed loop supply chain concept which completely reuses, remanufactures and recycles all materials. The book covers the emerging environmental issues in automotive industry through the whole product life cycle. Its focus is placed on a multidisciplinary approach. It presents viewpoints of academic and industry personnel on the challenges for implementation of sustainable police in the automotive sector

Book excerpt: The viability of an alternative fuel such as coal/oil mixtures (COM) for use in an existing engine will depend upon the overall performance of the engine when operating on the new fuel, the cost of the fuel and the engine conversion cost. CSIRO Division of Energy Technology has operated an essentially unmodified single cylinder, diesel engine on a mixture of finely ground, beneficiated Victorian brown coal and automotive distillate. A simple economic model based on "payback period" is used to investigate the economic viability of converting an existing diesel engine to operate on COM. Engine brake thermal efficiency ratio is shown to be an important parameter in determining the economic viability of new fuels.

Book excerpt: Chronic disease states of aging should be viewed through the prism of metabolism and biophysical processes at all levels of physiological organization present in the human body. This book describes the building blocks of understanding from a reasonable but not high-level technical language viewpoint, employing the perspective of a clinical physician. It brings together concepts from five specific branches of physics relevant to biology and medicine, namely, biophysics, classical electromagnetism, thermodynamics, systems biology and quantum mechanics. Key Features: Broad and up-to-date overview of the field of metabolism, especially connecting the spectrum of topics that range from modern physical underpinnings with cell biology to clinical practice. Provides a deeper basic science and interdisciplinary understanding of biological systems that broaden the perspectives and therapeutic problem solving. Introduces the concept of the Physiological Fitness Landscape, which is inspired by the physics of phase transitions This first volume in a two-volume set, primarily targets an audience of clinical and science students, biomedical researchers and physicians who would benefit from understanding each other’s language.
