Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Combination of Observations The aim of this book is to give an account of the method of Least Squares, without entering into elaborate descriptions of instruments or of experimental methods. The reader who wishes to apply the method to his own subject can find the experimental details in the textbooks relating to his own special subject, and any attempt to include such details in the present volume would have meant a considerable addition to its size. Hence it has been the author's aim to show how to obtain the best interpretation of the results of experiment, without consideration of the way in which these results are to be obtained. It cannot be too strongly insisted upon that the methods of Least Squares cannot in any way improve upon the actual observations. The application of these methods to a large number of carelessly conducted experiments cannot in general be expected to yield results as reliable as could be obtained from two or three carefully conducted experiments. The proof of the Normal Error Law has been based on Hagen's hypotheses regarding errors of observation. In most of the problems of Astronomy, Geodetics, and Physics the errors of observation satisfy the hypotheses, and the application of least square methods is justified. But cases may arise in which particular care is necessary in applying these methods. This is especially true of Biological problems. For organic variability is the resultant of A large number of contributory causes, some of which may have a definite tendency to act always in one direction. The effect of such a bias is to produce an unsymmetrical frequency distribution, and the application of ordinary least square methods is then meaningless. It is thus in no way justifiable to regard Least Squares as a magical instrument applicable to all problems. Of the arrangement of this volume little need be said. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory of Observations This assumption, which may be called the law of causality, cannot be proved, but must be believed; in the same way as we believe the fundamental assumptions of religion, with which it is closely and intimately connected. The law of causality forces itself upon our belief. It may be denied in theory, but not in practice. Any person who denies it, will, if he is watchful enough, catch himself constantly asking himself, if no one else, why this has happened, and not that. But in that very question he bears witness to the law of causality. If we are consistently to deny the law of causality, we must repudiate all observation, and particularly all prediction based on past experience, as useless and misleading. If we could imagine for an instant that the same complete combination of causes could have a definite number of different consequences, however small that number might be, and that among these the occurrence of the actual consequence was, in the old sense of the word, accidental, no observation would ever be of any particular value. Scientific observations cannot be reconciled with polytheism. So long as the idea prevailed that the result of a journey depended on whether the power of Njord or that of Skade was the stronger, or that victory or defeat in battle depended on whether Jove had, or had not, listened to Juno's complaints, so long were even scientists obliged to consider it below their dignity to consult observations. But if the law of causality is acknowledged to be an assumption which always holds good, then every observation gives us a revelation which, when correctly appraised and compared with others, teaches us the laws by which God rules the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Method of Least Squares, or the Application of the Theory of Probabilities in the Combination of Observations As the Method of Least Squares is applicable in almost all the physical sciences where numerical results are to be de duced from observations, and is here treated from fundae mental and general principles, it is thought that this separate publication of the Appendix will supply the want that has for a long time been felt of a suitable text-book on this sub jcet for the use of students of practical science generally, and more especially of classes in our scientific schools. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others.
