Book excerpt: A Wall Street Journal bestseller. A dead conspiracy theorist. A mass murderer. Two cases collide for Callahan and McLane in a pulse-pounding thriller by Wall Street Journal and Amazon Charts bestselling author Kendra Elliot. A man is savagely murdered outside Portland, and Detective Mason Callahan finds blood-spatter evidence that tells a troubling story. Files reveal the murder victim, Reuben Braswell, was a radical conspiracist. In his home, investigators find pages of diatribes against law enforcement as well as ties to Mason's fiancée, FBI special agent Ava McLane. The victim was her informant--and had strong reasons to be paranoid. To Ava, Braswell's rants were those of a wearying and harmless man...until they collide with her investigation into the murders of police officers and finding the connection becomes urgent. Meanwhile, Braswell's brother and Ava's twin sister both disappear, and disturbing acts of sabotage target Ava's personal life. For Mason and Ava, the brutal crimes and escalating mysteries create a perfect storm for a terrorist conspiracy that becomes dangerously personal--one that has yet to claim its last victim.

Cody's canoe trip from the Columbia's Canadian headwaters to where it meets the Pacific Ocean, churns up a lively portrait of the river and the land through which it courses. The Los Angeles Times Book Review praised the hardcover edition with "Voyage is neither an environmental treatise nor a search for [Cody's] own soul. It's about the taming of a river and, from water level, what that taming has meant.....Cody is a clear writer with strong descriptive powers." The hardcover edition was awarded the 1996 PNBA Award.

For over fifty years, she has maintained a close connection with the Native people of the Columbia River Plateau as a neighbor, journalist, teacher, and master basket maker on the Colville, Warm Springs, and Yakama reservations. These stories take place against a backdrop of change - from the uncertainty caused by federal efforts to terminate reservations in the 1950s through the growth of tribal self-determination that began in the 1970s. Schlick tells us about community and family, celebration and loss, and how she came to stay in the place she now calls home. Mary Dodds Schlickis the author ofColumbia River Basketry: Gift of the Ancestors, Gift of the Earth. A master artist in the Oregon Traditional Arts Program, she received an Oregon Governor's Arts Award in 1998.

This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after information from Lewis and Clark's expedition to chart the western region of the United States was shared, investors and explorers sought ways to capitalize on the information. In this work, Alexander Ross details the trials and tribulations of one such expedition, now known as the Astor Expedition. Ross was employed by John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company, and this led to the founding Fort Astoria, an American outpost near the Columbia River. Although the title suggests that members of Astoria were "the first settlers" of the region, it fails to consider the numerous indigenous tribes Ross encountered and described in great detail. For example, this work includes an appendix of Chinook vocabulary, highlighting how extensive and advanced the indigenous populations were that had already settled in that region. The fort itself was populated by a variety of people, including French-Canadians, Scots, Hawaiians, Americans, and a variety of indigenous North American peoples, such as Iroquois. Due to the War of 1812, the fort was bought out by the North West Company, which renamed it Fort George.

Book excerpt: Daniel McCool chronicles the surging grassroots movement to bring America's rivers back to life and ensure they remain pristine for future generations. This book confirms the surprising news that America's rivers are indeed returning to a healthier, free-flowing condition. Through passion and dedication, ordinary people are reclaiming the American landscape, forming a nation-wide "river republic" of concerned citizens from all backgrounds and sectors of society. McCool profiles the individuals he calls "instigators," who initiated the fight for these waterways and have succeeded in the near-impossible task of challenging and changing the status quo. He ties the history, culture, and fate of America to its rivers and presents their restoration as a microcosm mirroring American beliefs, livelihoods, and an increasing awareness of our shared environmental fate.
