Download or read book Cultures Collide written by Ann Rossi and published by National Geographic Kids. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultures Collide begins its story with a mistake; but the mistake was made by Christopher Columbus. When Columbus sailed to find trade routes to Asia, he landed in the Americas instead, discovering a "new world." But this new world wasn't new to everyone. Native Americans had been living on this land for over 10,000 years and they were not particularly thrilled to see these newcomers arrive on their shores. As Europeans moved onto American soil, they needed to interact with and understand the Native Americans and their culture. The cultural groups were very different, but as soon as the two groups met they began to influence one another. Cultures Collide discusses this interaction and explains how both Europeans and Native Americans changed aspects of their lives, including housing, food, animals, and trade, as a result. For example, the Native Americans introduce Europeans to corn, buffalo, and turkeys, and Europeans introduced Americans to sugar, pigs, cattle, and sheep. The book also highlights the reintroduction of the horse to the Americas and its powerful effect on the Native American lifestyle. Sadly, not every interaction was positive. The collision of these two cultures also brought about war and the spread of disease and hunger. Cultures Collide demonstrates how the early contact between Native American and European cultures changed life in the Americas forever. Like the others in the series, Cultures Collide is illustrated with period paintings and drawings. Also included are a glossary and an index.

Book Synopsis Cultures in Conflict by : Urs Bitterli
Download or read book Cultures in Conflict written by Urs Bitterli and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most histories of exploration are written from the viewpoint of the explorers. This book, now available in paperback, focuses instead on the cultural encounters between European explorers and non-European people, reconstructing the experiences of both sides. The result is a remarkable work of comparative cultural history, ranging from North America to the South Pacific and from the voyages of Columbus to those of Captain Cook. Bitterli distinguishes three basic forms of cultural encounter: superficial contact, as in the early relations between Europe and China; a prolonged relationship, like that between missionaries and the North American Indians; and collision, leading to the destruction of the weaker partner, as happened in the Spanish Conquest of the West Indies and of Mexico. In a series of case studies Bitterli examines these types of cultural encounter, drawing on a wide range of primary sources.

Book Synopsis Collision Culture by : Kieran Keohane

Book excerpt: The central premise of Collision Culture is that Ireland's experience of economic boom has resulted in the collision of incompatible ways of life. These cultural collisions in Irish life today occur between the local and global, between traditional and modern, between Catholic and secular, and between rural and urban. They have become apparent in a variety of changes - changes in patterns of rates of suicide, in patterns of consumption, in representations of Irish celebrities, in patterns of home ownership, in the rise of tribunals, and in a variety of other points of public discourse and Irish culture. The authors argue that the above categories clearly are not starkly divided, but rather are analytic reference points that are useful in trying to understand the conflicts behind various social problems in Ireland. By investigating cultures of everyday life - driving, housing, music, religion, consumerism, fashion, and sexuality, among others - the book shows how recent social transformations are manifest at the everyday level.
