During this period of time Brother Lee gave conferences in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Blackfoot, Idaho. Also, in April he traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and to three cities in Texas--Plainview, Odessa, and Tyler. Unfortunately, only the messages given in Tyler were recorded. After returning to Los Angeles for the month of May, Brother Lee traveled to New York City, where he gave messages during a monthlong conference and training from June through July. The contents of this volume are divided into ten sections, as follows: 1. Ten messages given at a conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, on February 14 through 20. This series of messages is included in this volume under the title Experiencing Christ in Our Spirit for the Church Life. 2. Five messages given at a conference in Blackfoot, Idaho, on March 8 through 11. These messages are included in this volume under the title Vessels of God. 3. Four messages given to young people at a conference in Big Bear, California, on March 24 and 25. These messages have been previously published under the title A Young Man in God's Plan. 4. Four messages given in Los Angeles on March 27 through 29. These messages have been previously published under the title The Centrality and Universality of Christ. 5. Nine messages given in a conference in Tyler, Texas, on April 24 through 29. The recorded messages were edited to form the eleven chapters of this section, which is entitled Exercising Our Spirit to Practice the Body Life. 6. Six messages given at a conference in Los Angeles on May 26 through 31 and included in this volume under the title Serving in the Body for the Carrying Out of the Lord's Recovery. 7. Nine messages given in Los Angeles during the Lord's Day meetings from January 5 through May 31. These messages are included in this volume in the section titled Lord's Day Meetings. 8. Seven miscellaneous messages given in the Los Angeles area from February 9 through June 2. These messages are compiled in this volume under the title Miscellaneous Speakings. The contents of this section were composed from personal notes taken by saints who attended the meetings. 9. The first period is the three months from January through March, during which Brother Lee was in Manila, Philippines, in January and returned to Taipei, Taiwan, via Hong Kong in February. He then conducted three conferences and a few co-workers' meetings in March. The second period consists of the next six months, from the beginning of April through mid October. During this period Brother Lee traveled around the world, passing through Tokyo, Osaka, and Shenyu in Japan (April 8 through 22); Honolulu, San Francisco, Berkeley, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, New York City, Washington, D.C., and Toronto in the United States and Canada (April 23 through August 1); London, Copenhagen, Glasgow, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Zurich, Geneva, Rome, and Athens in Europe (August 2 through September 21); Beirut, Jerusalem, and Tehran in the Middle East (September 22 through 28); Karachi, Rangoon (now Yangon), and Bangkok in South and Southeast Asia (September 29 through October 3); and Hong Kong (October 4 through 15) before returning to Taiwan on October 16. The third period consists of the last three months in Taiwan, during which time he conducted various conferences. For the first period we have records of Brother Lee's meeting with district responsible ones in Hong Kong on February 12. The three conferences that Brother Lee conducted in Taiwan in March were on the subject of enjoying God. This is the first time that Brother Lee released the light concerning this subject. In addition to the three conferences, Brother Lee conducted a number of meetings with serving ones on March 4 through 8. He also gave a series of messages on reading the Bible and another series of messages on the vision of the tree of life. The messages given during this period are included in volume 1 of this set. For the second period we have records of Brother Lee's speaking in Tokyo in April in a conference on enjoying God and records of a few private talks. There are two records of his speaking in New York and four records of his speaking in Denmark. In addition, he wrote long letters that reveal some of the meetings that took place during his trip. These letters are published in Church News in volume 1 of this set. After his visits to the United States, Europe, and the Middle East, he returned to Hong Kong in October. There he held two weeks of conferences on God's building. In the third period, upon returning to Taiwan in October, Brother Lee conducted a conference on God's building, with meetings in both the morning and the evening. In addition, he conducted various meetings with serving ones. After the conference, on Mondays and Wednesdays he gave additional messages on the subject of God's building. Almost all the messages given in the second and third periods of 1958 are included in volume 2 of this set. Some of his speaking in October and November is included in volume 1 in the section entitled The Perfecting of the Saints and the Building Up of the House of God. The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1958, volume 1, contains messages, personal letters, and reports by Brother Witness Lee from February through December 1958. Historical information concerning Brother Lee's travels and the content of his ministry in 1958 can be found in the general preface that appears at the beginning of this volume. These messages are included in this volume under the title A God Who Hides Himself. Chapter 1 of this section is an unabridged version of the message included in volume 2 as chapter 1 of the section entitled The Ministry of the Word, Miscellaneous Messages, 1956. 3. Two sets of personal notes written in July 1956 and in October through December 1956. These notes are included in this volume under the title Witness Lee's Personal Notes. 4. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From January until March 1955, Brother Witness Lee remained in Taipei, Taiwan, to continue a series of Bible studies that he began the previous year. These studies were on the books of the New Testament from Matthew through Revelation. They are included in volume 1 of this set. After he completed this series, he traveled to the Philippines, where he remained until August. There he conducted another Bible study on the books from Matthew through Acts and gave messages on several chapters of 1 and 2 Peter. He also gave messages on a number of topics, including how to be useful to the Lord, the living and principles of the kingdom people, reward and punishment, the way for a Christian to mature in life, and the central work of God and the proper spiritual experiences. These messages are included in volumes 2 and 3 of this set. In September he traveled to Hong Kong and remained there until the end of December. During this time he conducted another Bible study on the New Testament from Romans through Colossians, perhaps as a continuation of the Bible study that he had conducted in the Philippines. He also gave a series of messages on the mingling of God and man and the principle of resurrection, another series of further talks on the knowledge of life, a training on how to conduct meetings, as well as messages on other topics. During his visit to Hong Kong, saints from Southeast Asia came and joined the meetings. As a result, he had some times of fellowship with these saints. Brother Lee's speaking in Hong Kong is included in volume 4 of this set. At the end of November, T. Austin-Sparks visited the Far East for the first time and held meetings first in Hong Kong and then in Taiwan. Brother Lee remained with Brother Austin-Sparks during his entire visit. The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1955, volume 1, contains messages given by Brother Witness Lee in 1955. Historical information concerning Brother Lee's travels and the content of his ministry in 1955 can be found in the general preface that appears at the beginning of this volume. The contents of this volume are divided into three sections, as follows: 1. One article that was published in the hardbound edition of The Ministry of the Word in 1955. This article is included in this volume under the title The Ministry of the Word, Miscellaneous Messages, 1955. 2. Four messages that were originally published by the Taiwan Gospel Book Room in August in Twelve Baskets Full, volumes 8, 9, and 12. These messages are included in this volume under the title Miscellaneous Messages from Twelve Baskets Full. 3. Forty-two messages given in Taipei, Taiwan, on January 12 through March 5. These messages are included in this volume under the title A Study of the New Testament in the Light of Christ as Life.
