Book excerpt: The New Politics of Old Values provides the first assessment of the vital importance of values in the political process by analyzing Ronald Reagan's intuitive appeal to traditional American values including individualism, freedom, and equality of opportunity. The author was the first to go beyond money and taxes into the now hot topic of values as motivation for the decision-making of voters. He exposes the first approach to an election with a 'strategy of values' as Reagan did in 1980 through this now dominant subject during the presidency of Bill Clinton. He follows the evolution from Reagan's appeal to the underlying liberalism that characterizes the American polity using the words 'family, work, neighborhood, peace, and freedom' to Clinton's repeated emphasis on 'opportunity, community, and responsibility, ' capturing how values have reshaped the political maps of the United States bringing the Democratic and Republican parties together on these mandatory issues

This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 703 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published originally in 1809-1810, The Friend was revised in 1812, by public demand. In 1818, a three-volume rifacimento appeared in which Coleridge attempted to dispel obscurity, tie up loose threads of reasoning, and provide more mature apercus. Now, in the Collected Works, The Friend has been re-edited to return to Coleridge's 1818 text. His emendations, cuts, and marginal comments noted in six copies of the work, as well as manuscript additions and deletions, have been included as footnotes. The editor’s footnotes also elucidate sources and themes and provide translations of the many Latin and Greek passages. The entire periodical Friend is given as an appendix, with the 1812 revisions. Originally published in 1969. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not long after Lincoln's assassination, the debate began: Was Lincoln a committed Christian or a confirmed skeptic? Scholar Philip Ostergard provides the answer with a thorough study of the president's references to God, the Bible, and Christian principles in his letters and speeches. The Inspired Wisdom of Abraham Lincoln illustrates the depth of Lincoln's knowledge of Scripture; the Bible's influence on his character; and the development of his faith, particularly as he wrestled with the issue of slavery and led the nation through the tumultuous years of the Civil War. Readers will find this a fascinating and inspiring handbook of answers to the questions about one of our greatest presidents.

This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1911 Jung published a book of which he says: '...it laid down a programme to be followed for the next few decades of my life.' It was vastly erudite and covered innumerable fields of study: psychiatry, psychoanalysis, ethnology and comparitive religion amongst others. In due course it became a standard work and was translated into French, Dutch and Italian as well as English, in which language it was given the well-known but somewhat misleading title of The Psychology of the Unconscious. In the Foreword to the present revised edition which first appeared in 1956, Jung says: '...it was the explosion of all those psychic contents which could find no room, no breathing space, in the constricting atmosphere of Freudian psychology... It was an attempt, only partially successful, to create a wider setting for medical psychology and to bring the whole of the psychic phenomena within its purview.' For this edition, appearing ten years after the first, bibliographical citations and entries have been revised in the light of subsequent publications in the Collected Works and in the standard edition of Freud's works, some translations have been substituted in quotations, and other essential corrections have been made, but there have been no changes of substance in the text.

Book excerpt: Ken Follett’s magnificent historical epic begins as five interrelated families move through the momentous dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for women’s suffrage. A thirteen-year-old Welsh boy enters a man’s world in the mining pits. . . . An American law student rejected in love finds a surprising new career in Woodrow Wilson’s White House. . . . A housekeeper for the aristocratic Fitzherberts takes a fateful step above her station, while Lady Maud Fitzherbert herself crosses deep into forbidden territory when she falls in love with a German spy. . . . And two orphaned Russian brothers embark on radically different paths when their plan to emigrate to America falls afoul of war, conscription, and revolution. From the dirt and danger of a coal mine to the glittering chandeliers of a palace, from the corridors of power to the bedrooms of the mighty, Fall of Giants takes us into the inextricably entangled fates of five families—and into a century that we thought we knew, but that now will never seem the same again. . . .

Book excerpt: This work introduces Kenneth White’s geopoetics as a radical, postmodern interdisciplinary and intercultural project that reclaims the return to communication with the earth, nature, wo-man, and the self as part of a cosmic unity approach. It traces geopoetics’ beginnings, key concepts, territories and trajectories, aims, and perspectives. Geopoetics is shown here to be a cosmopolitan project for a more open and harmonious world, which buries narrow-mindedness and offers new horizons.

Book excerpt: Despite the voluminous literature on the central figure in American history, no other book in the field of political science compares to Lincoln's American Dream. It addresses comprehensively the overarching themes of Lincoln's political thought and leadership through provocative and divergent interpretations from leading scholars. Each chapter is devoted to one of these major themes about Lincoln: - The Declaration and equality - Political ambition - Race and slavery - His democratic political leadership - Executive power - Religion and politics - The Union and the role of the state The book's thirty-three contributors include such respected Lincoln scholars and political commentators as Harry V. Jaffa, Stephen B. Oates, Mark E. Neely, Richard C. Current, Herman Belz, and Frank J. Williams. With an introduction by Kenneth L. Deutsch and Joseph R. Fornieri, Lincoln's American Dream will be of enduring interest to scholars, students, teachers, and Lincoln aficionados alike and will attract interest in the fields of American history, leadership, religion and culture, American studies, and African-American studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discusses the ability of psychotechnology to control the fragility and pathos of the ego, which can create and validate humanity while also rationalizing cruelties and inhumanity. The negative, animalistic characteristics of man must be subordinated to the positive values of love and empathy without sacrificing creativity or selective capacities. It is proposed that a program of direct biochemical intervention be implemented to control negativistic tendencies. Ultimately, world leaders who have the nuclear power to determine the fate of humanity should be given the earliest perfected form of appropriate drugs. This requirement would control the barbaric use of power and insure that survival of the human species is not sacrificed to the personal ego pathos of powerful individuals.
