Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The booming coal industry of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was the main reason behind the creation of modern south Wales and its miners were central to shaping the economics, politics and society of south Wales during the twentieth century. This book explores the history of these miners between 1964 and 1985, covering the concerted run-down of the coal industry under the Wilson government, the growth of miners’ resistance, and the eventual defeat of the epic strike of 1984-5. Their interactions with the wider trade union movement and society during these years meant the miners were amongst the most important strategically-located sections of the British workforce during this time. The South Wales Miners is the first full-length academic study of the miners and their union in the later twentieth century, in a tumultuous period of crisis and struggle.

Book excerpt: No one personified the age of industry more than the miners. The Shadow of the Mine tells the story of King Coal in its heyday – and what happened to mining communities after the last pits closed. The Shadow of the Mine tells the story of King Coal in its heyday, the heroics and betrayals of the Miners’ Strike, and what happened to mining communities after the last pits closed. No one personified the age of industry more than the miners. Coal was central to the British economy, powering its factories and railways. It carried political weight, too. In the eighties the miners risked everything in a year-long strike against Thatcher’s shutdowns. Their defeat doomed a way of life. The lingering sense of abandonment in former mining communities would be difficult to overstate. Yet recent electoral politics has revolved around the coalfield constituencies in Labour’s Red Wall. Huw Beynon and Ray Hudson draw on decades of research to chronicle these momentous changes through the words of the people who lived through them. This edition includes a new postscript on why Thatcher’s war on the miners wasn’t good for green politics. ‘Excellent’ NEW STATESMAN ‘Brilliant’ TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT ‘Enlightening’ GUARDIAN

Book Synopsis Images of the South Wales Mines by : David Bellamy
Download or read book Images of the South Wales Mines written by David Bellamy and published by Sutton Publishing. This book was released on 1993 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is a celebration of the South Wales Coalfield, and an important record of the industry during its last working days. Graphically illustrating life of the mines in watercolours and black and white sketches, this book describes the history of the Coalfield, from its beginnings in the early nineteenth century through the heyday of 'King Coal' when South Wales was 'the powerhouse of the Empire' to the hardships of the Depression, the post-war rundown and finally the virtual demise of the deep pits." "Here are large landscape paintings of the great mines of the Coalfield at Big Pit, Taff Merthyr and in the Rhondda; depictions of pit-head gear, working underground, coal-trains and pit ponies; gritty portraits of the men who worked at the coal face; and gentler scenes of the cottages and communities above ground, and the landscapes reclaimed by Nature as the pits fell silent." "David Bellamy, who lives on the eastern edge of the Coalfield, at Pontypool, has produced many mining paintings over recent years, and has talked to miners and sketched underground. All the paintings are therefore as accurate as possible. The result is an intimate portrayal of an industry that has now almost become history, in an area in which coal was at the heart of most people's lives." "The accompanying text relates the story of the mines: the especially difficult geological problems of the valleys; the harsh working conditions; child labour; social conditions; protests, disasters and riots. Full captions describe the sources of the paintings, and show how they were painted, and the techniques and working methods employed are explained in the last part of the book. Finally, mining museums and other places of historical interest are given." "Images of the South Wales Mines will be fascinating to miners and ex-miners and their families and those who work in the industry, as well as to people who live in or visit the area. It will also appeal to those with a more general interest in our industrial heritage and to amateur artists who wish to paint mining or industrial scenes."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
