Download or read book Under Pressure written by Jen Schneider and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-10 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines five rhetorical strategies used by the US coal industry to advance its interests in the face of growing economic and environmental pressures: industrial apocalyptic, corporate ventriloquism, technological shell game, hypocrite’s trap, and energy utopia. The authors argue that these strategies appeal to and reinforce neoliberalism, a discourse and set of practices that privilege market rationality and individual freedom and responsibility above all else. As the coal industry has become the leading target and leverage point for those seeking more aggressive action to mitigate climate change, their corporate advocacy may foreshadow rhetorical strategies available to other fossil fuel industries as they manage similar economic and cultural shifts. The authors’ analysis of coal’s corporate advocacy also identifies contradictions and points of vulnerability in the organized resistance to climate action as well as the larger ideological formation of neoliberalism.

Book Synopsis Burning the Future: Coal in America by :
Download or read book Burning the Future: Coal in America written by and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring both coal and mining advocates as well as opponents, this is the preeminent film on the coal controversy. Every eleven and one-half days, the explosive equivalent of the Hiroshima atomic bomb is unleashed upon the mountains of southern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky - for coal. Burning the Future: Coal in America challenges the concept of “clean coal”, documenting the devastating ecological, social and health impact of coal mining and mountain-top removal. The film follows the explosive forces that have set in motion a groundswell of conflict between the coal industry and residents of West Virginia, where over 1.4 million acres of mountains have been destroyed and groundwater polluted. Confronted by a US energy policy that favors coal without sufficient regard for the negative impact its extraction causes, local activists organize to arouse the nation and help protect their health, their communities and their way of life.. "Starred Review. Classes can utilize this film to explore the issues of clean coal and the politics of coal, and examine their own usage of electricity--powered by coal.". . School Library Journal. . "Highly Recommended. Burning the Future casts a critical but fair-minded eye on coal mining in West Virginia.". . Video Librarian. . "The flawless beauty of Novack's coverage of dynamited mountains, slurry pools and rapidly churned-out coal underscores the inexorability of the practice and the devastation in its wake.". . Variety.

Book Synopsis Democratic Miners by : Perry K. Blatz
Download or read book Democratic Miners written by Perry K. Blatz and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democratic Miners traces the history of work and labor relations in the anthracite coal industry, focusing on conditions that led up to, and followed, the famous strike of 1902. That strike, an epic five-and-a-half-month struggle, led the federal government to intervene in a labor dispute for the first time in American history. Focusing on the workplace, Blatz puts the 1902 strike in the context of a turbulent half-century of labor-management relations. Those years saw the unionization of the anthracite fields under the United Mine Workers of America, amidst an evolving democratic tradition of rank-and-file protest against corporate control, and ironically ended with a growing rift between miners and union leadership. Unlike many books on labor relations, this work concentrates especially on the workers themselves. Working-class as opposed to union history, it contributes greatly to our understanding of working-class formation in the Progressive years.
