Book excerpt: Measurements of the distribution of CO 2 between the atmosphere and the sea are presented with a description of the apparatus used and its calibration. The measurements were made on a series of cruises into the Gulf of Mexico, the Northern Caribbean Sea and the Western North Atlantic Ocean, in the gas phase using a nondispersive double-beam infrared analyzer. Four geographical patterns in the distribution of CO2 between the phases were observed; first, pCO2 of the air over the Southwestern Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of Campeche and a 40 mile wide strip near shore of the Louisiana Gulf Coast was 303 ppm and pCO2 of the surface waters was 270-290 ppm. The second, bounded by the Bahama Banks, the island of Bermuda and the continental United States, has a pCO 2 of 311 to 312 ppm in the air and PCO2 of the waters was 290 ppm. A diurnal cycle in pCO2 of the air of 4-8 ppm was observed over this area. The maximum occurred at 1800 hours local time and the minimum between 2400 and 0600. The third, consisting of the Northern Caribbean and Atlantic south of the Bahama Banks, where pCO2 of the air was 316 ppm and pCO2 of the surface waters was between 270 and 300 ppm. A tropical rain squall in this area produced large excursions to 330 ppm of pCO2 in the sea to a depth of 200 feet. The fourth, the Eastern Gulf of Mexico from the straits of Florida to the mouth of the Mississippi River, pCO2 in the air averaged 316 ppm and pCO2 of the sea was above 325 ppm. A diurnal cycle of 70 ppm in the pCO2 of the sea was observed in the Gulf of Batabano, Cuba, the maximum was 400 ppm at the time of maximum insolation and the minimum occurred before dawn. The change in pCO2 per degree centigrade in sea water of 19% chlorinity and pH of 8.2 was measured and is a 4.5 ppm. The change in pCO2 with temperature is a function of pH and for the same water is 7. 0 ppm per degree at pH of 8.0.

Book excerpt: Coastal zones receive massive terrestrial inputs of nutrients and organic matter, and play an important role in biogeochemical cycles. The interactions of river inputs, ocean currents, atmospheric exchanges, anthropogenic influences, and biologically active ecosystems make CO2 system studies in coastal waters highly challenging. This work focuses on improving our understanding of the CO2 system in coastal waters through (1) development of a new methodology for measurements of CO2 system parameters in the field; (2) observations of large spatial and temporal CO2 system variations in coastal waters; and (3) characterization of the influence of organics on CO2 system behavior in coastal waters. A novel portable light-emitting-diode (LED) photometer was developed to provide low-cost seawater pH measurements in the field. With meta cresol purple (mCP) as the indicator, the photometer produces pHT measurements within 0.01 units of state-of-the-art spectrophotometric measurements (7.6 pH 8.2, 30 S 36.2, and 15 oC t 30 oC). With a simple do-it-yourself (DIY) construction design, a hundredfold reduction in cost relative to benchtop spectrophotometric systems, and routine calibration-free operation in the field, the DIY photometer is an ideal replacement for pH test strips or consumer-level potentiometric probes. Applications of special interest include education, citizen science, coastal zone monitoring, and aquaculture and aquarium management. Subannual variability of total alkalinity (TA) distributions in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) was examined through the use of TA data from ship-based water sampling, historical records of riverine TA, and contemporaneous model output of surface currents and salinity. Variability of TA observed in the upper 150 m of the GOM water column was primarily controlled by subannual variations in the extent of mixing between seawater and river water.

Critical to these interests is the effect of cold temperature on bacterial activity. Also important is the extent to which marine biological processes in general impact the inorganic carbon cycle. The study area is the Northeast Water (NEW) Polynya, a seasonally-recurrent opening in the permanent ice situated over the northeastern Greenland continental shelf. This work was part of an international, multi-disciplinary research project studying carbon cycling in the coastal Arctic. The first chapter describes a simple model which links a complex marine food web to a simplified ocean and atmosphere. The second chapter investigates the inorganic carbon inventory of the summertime NEW Polynya surface waters to establish the effect of biological processes on the air-sea pCO[sub 2] gradient. The third and fourth chapters use a kinetic approach to examine microbial activities in the NEW Polynya as a function of temperature and dissolved organic substrate concentration, testing the so-called Pomeroy hypothesis that microbial activity is disproportionately reduced at low environmental temperatures owing to increased organic substrate requirements. Together, the suite of data collected on microbial activities, cell size, and grazing pressure suggest how unique survival strategies adopted by an active population of high-latitude bacteria may contribute to, rather than detract from, an efficient biological carbon pump.

From tidal to multi-annual variability, from a fixed station off Roscoff to the north-west European continental shelf and from seawater samples to satellite data, this PhD thesis provides an integrative overview of the complexity of the CO2 system dynamics in coastal seas and the ongoing challenges to achieve.
