Download or read book Bwiti written by James W Fernandez and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We cannot, the author argues, adequately understand the religious imagination without knowing the historical, social, and cultural matrices from which it arises. Accordingly, his book explores the Fang culture of Gabon as a set of contexts from which emerges the Bwiti religion. In addition to experience with missionary Christianity, Bwiti uses a great reservoir of images and ideas from its own past. Professor Fernandez analyszes how they are recreated into a compelling religious universe, an equatorial microcosm. Part I, a detailed ethnographic account of Fang culture after colonial encounter, addresses the attendant problems. The author discusses the European influence on the self-concept of the Fang, family life and kinship, and political and economic relationships. Part II analyzes in greater detail the religious implications of European administration and missionary efforts. In Part III the author shows how the malaise and increasing isolation of part of Fang culture achieve some assuagement of the Bwiti religion, which seeks a reconciliation of the past and present. James W. Fernandez is Professor of Anthropology at Princeton University and author of many studies in this discipline. Originally published in 1982. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Book Synopsis Inside U by : Byong Grandmaster Yu, Ph.D.
Download or read book Inside U written by Byong Grandmaster Yu, Ph.D. and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2004-08-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Being a student of Master Yu has increased my ability to focus and concentrate, and has enhanced my discipline. Master Yu's teachings have been beneficial to both my professional and personal life." - Jennifer Garner, motion picture and TV star An incredibly moving, engrossing, and almost-mythological tale of how one man endured the highest of highs and the lowest of lows throughout his extraordinary life. Born into Japanese-occupied Korea, young Byong Yu was diagnosed as developmentally retarded. Convinced that he would become a burden to his family, doctors told his parents to put him in the corner and let him die. Consequently, survival was an instinct that he honed at a very early age. Byong was known to the village as “Ugly Boy,” yet he refused to give up. His destiny led him to a wise and gifted martial arts master who agreed to accept him as a student. In the years that followed, Byong used the profound wisdom instilled in him by his master to succeed at martial arts and triumph through the Korean War. After emigrating to the United States, Byong struggled to live the American dream through years of poverty and homelessness. And a tragedy that finally drove him to the brink of suicide almost shattered his spirit once and for all. However, in the long and arduous process of rebuilding his life, he managed to become a martial arts legend—one who now trains some of Hollywood’s elite. This is Byong Yu’s story, but even more important, it’s a guidebook to discovering your own true path—whatever that may be—and conquering any obstacle that stands in your way. As Master Yu says: “I have triumphed over countless obstacles that I have faced in my lifetime. Yet through it all, I have managed to fulfill my destiny and come to intimately discover who and what I am. And if I can do it, so can you!”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Winner of the Sophie Brody Medal* A moving and uplifting history set to music that reveals the rich life of one of the first internationally renowned female violinists. Spanning generations, from the shores of the Black Sea to the glittering concert halls of New York, The Nightingale's Sonata is a richly woven tapestry centered around violin virtuoso Lea Luboshutz. Like many poor Jews, music offered an escape from the predjudices that dominated society in the last years of the Russian Empire. But Lea’s dramatic rise as an artist was further accentuated by her scandalous relationship with the revolutionary Onissim Goldovsky. As the world around them descends in to chaos, between revolution and war, we follow Lea and her family from Russia to Europe and eventually, America. We cross paths with Pablo Casals, Isadora Duncan, Emile Zola and even Leo Tolstoy. The little girl from Odessa will eventually end up as one of the founding faculty of the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, but along the way she will lose her true love, her father, and watch a son die young. The Iron Curtain would rise, but through it all, she plays on. Woven throughout this luminous odyssey is the story is Cesar Franck’s “Sonata for Violin and Piano.” As Lea was one of the first-ever internationally recognized female violinists, it is fitting that this pioneer was one of the strongest advocates for this young boundary-pushing composer and his masterwork.
