Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cliosophic Society Princeton University a Study of Its History in Commemoration, of Its Sesquicentennial Anniversary The committee constituted, early in the year 1915, by the Cliosophic Society to prepare for the proper celebration of the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Society, decided that the principal feature of the commemoration should be the publication of a history of the Society. A special committee on history was named of which Professor V. L. Collins was made chairman. It is the unwritten law of America in regard to committees that the chairman shall do all the work. But Professor Collins, aided and abetted by other members of the committee, laid the burden upon me, the least and last of the committee. Always loyal to Clio, I could not on the instant think of a good reason for refusing; and so - with much reluctance - I undertook the task. What I have written, however, has had the careful scrutiny and the revising pen of Professor Collins. For all errors of omission or commission, therefore, let those who may read hold him equally responsible. It is my hope that the sons of Clio may find somewhat to interest them in the record of the Society here presented; that it may deepen their devotion and intensify their loyalty to the muse they claim as patron. Book excerpt: William Paterson is best known to history as the spokesman of "the New Jersey plan" in the Federal Convention, intended to preserve the rights of the smaller States against their larger sisters. His fame rests upon his administration as Governor of New Jersey, and his thirteen years as a Justice of the United States Supreme Court. An insight into his earlier years is afforded by the publication of "Glimpses of Colonial Society and the Life at Princeton College." These glimpses are given in a series of letters written by Paterson to his college friends, and by random letters written to him. Among these friends are John Macpherson, who fell in the assault of Quebec, Luther Martin, of Anti-Federalist fame, and Aaron Burr, who was graduated from Princeton in the class of 1772. With these letters are included some verses, chiefly in the style of Pope, intended for the Cliosophic Society of Princeton College, and a few scraps of old-time college songs. Abounding in classic allusion, passing readily upon occasion into Latin, quoting from Swift, Pope, Molière, and Horace, the compositions of this young law student illustrate the aristocracy of letters in that day. Although covering the years important in the political revolution of the Colonies, there is scarcely a reference to politics, or any prophecy of the public career so soon to be opened to this verbose essayist.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Princeton, Sixty-Three: Fortieth-Year Book of the Members of the Class of 1863 This Book originated at the reunion of 1903. Circular had been issued from Philadelphia, March 19th, preceding, by Dr. S. S. Stryker, Class President, and Professor J. W. Patton acting as Secretary, inviting the Members to the Class to the Fortieth-year Dinner at the Princeton Inn on the Monday of Commencement week, June 8th., and likewise to lunch at University Hall on the Saturday previous, and to take part in the Procession to the Ball Game, which is the feature of that day. There was a good response to this, some twenty-one of our number in all being on the Campus during Commencement time. Some account of these occasions and the names of those who were present, will be found under the sketch of Holmes. In the course of the Banquet Professor Patton was requested to continue to act as Class Secretary, in the room of the lamented Samuel B. Huey who died in 1901. The proposal was then made by Gen. Reeder that we have a Class Book, which was seconded by Prof. Patton, who proposed my name as Class Historian. With warm assurances of co-operation from all sides the project was started. The honor was quite unlooked for, but too gratifying to be refused, and I undertook the work gladly. I had not a shred of preparation, however, and had even quite forgotten a little collection of Class and College ana saved up in post collegiate days, but laid by and buried in the dust of many many years. A thick packet of sad and defaced envelopes, stamped by the postal authorities "Unclaimed, Return to Sender," turned over to me by Prof. Patton as the fruits of his endeavors to reach our Classmates, suggested melancholy thoughts and did not encourage hopes of a fruitful correspondence. In fact, though not dead myself, I had a vague impression that I should find but few to contribute materials for a Book, - which accounts for some blundering in the Circulars of Announcement and Inquiry which I hastened to send out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from After Five Years: The Quinquennial Record of the Class of 1908, Princeton University One evening some three years ago, you addressed an audience in one of our eastern cities; a number of us filled the front rows. You smiled your greeting, and then prefaced your remarks by saying: "I see immediately before me a number of my old scholars. Let me assure you, ladies and gentlemen, these young men will not absorb so much of what I have to say that there will not be plenty left for all." We may have been indifferent students and our absorbing qualities may have been limited, but we were sincere in our appreciation of your teachings and in our esteem for you. In our Princeton fellowship therefore and in token of our regard, we dedicate to you, this book, our Quinquennial Record. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book seek to establish a true sociology of education. Their primary concern is the relationship between formal education and other social forces through the ages. Thus, the book combines the history of higher education with social history in order to understand the process of historical change. To ascertain the responses of the universities to such broad social changes as the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the Industrial Revolution, the authors ask such questions as: who were the students and how many were there? how did they get to the university and why did they come? how did they spend their time and what did they learn? what jobs did they fill and how did what they learned help them in later life? how have faculty members viewed their roles over the years? Lawrence Stone is Dodge Professor of History at Princeton University, Chairman of the History Department, and Director of the Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies. Originally published in 1974. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Class of '74: Of Princeton College Classmates: Uncalled for as it may seem, at this time, it becomes the duty of your historian to offer an apology; an apology, too, of a peculiarly earnest and deeply-meant nature. Not like that one over which Jakey Van Deventer, in the last year of our course, spent so many weary hours, burnt so much midnight oil, heaved so many hollow groans, and in the study of which he became 60 meagre looking. Nor an apology like Erne Smith's, in Soph year, when he feelingly alleged that lemon-peels were the cause of his seeming indisposition. Nor yet like that of "Mose," alias "H-i-1-l-o-w," who on the occasion of a long remembered festivity accounted for his sudden and permanent retirement from the company by the remark that warm water always did make him sick. On the present occasion I have naught to do with anything so trifling; my apology is directed to our class, and directly affects our class interests; it is that even in this most serious and weighty affair of history-writing I have been behind time. Important is this matter, and, according to our rhetoric, it will bear a far drawn simile. Bear with me then for a moment while, in justification, I explain my position. Thucydides, as you remember, wrote the war of the Athenians with the Pelopenesians: I began to write an account of our war with Profs, Tutors, Sophs, and Snobs, as we battled one with another. Thucydides began with the account of his in its incipiency, believing that it would be the greatest and best that had ever been waged; and so did I. And thereby hangs a tale, together with the marked difference between Thucydides and myself. I was, in Fresh year, too much impressed with the imaginative in writing; I began with too much incipiency, if you will pardon an outlandish term; I anticipated too many events, and depicted on immortal pages the deeds of my illustrious heroes as I thought they would be, rather than as they were. Besides, I don't think Thucydides improved much: (this antithesis you can fill out for yourselves.) He sadly lacked early training, and in consequence his writings bear no striking marks of progress in composition, as vie understand composition. His style is so ungraceful, his words so badly spelt, his chirography so awkwardly executed, his manuscript so closely, vide Bohn, folded up, and the whole thing bears such a faint resemblance to Desdemona, or a sunbeam, reclining on a bank of violets. I am convinced from all internal proofs, that it would have been of incalculable advantage to him to have been, for at least four years, under the tuition of some master rhetorician who had written books.
