Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Clinical Pathology of the Blood of Domesticated Animals That the examination of the blood has not been more generally used by veterinarians is partly due to the lack of accessible data concerning the blood of animals. There is a real need of a text book that will place this material within the reach of practitioners and students. It is true that but few data have been collected concerning the blood of animals compared with the amount known regarding the blood of man. Some work has, however, been done and the results obtained are of more value than their mere amount would indicate, because from the studies made of the condition of the blood in diseased animals we have learned that similar pathological processes produce, in general, changes in the blood similar to those produced by such processes in man. So the rich results obtained in human practice are made available to the veterinary practitioner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Clinical Diagnostics of the Internal Diseases of Domestic Animals In the translation of Malkmus "Grundriss der Klinischen Diagnostik" we have endeavored simply to reproduce the author's ideas with the hope that the English and American Veterinary Students may thus be provided with a text-book for which they have long felt a need. The needs of the students in the College of Veterinary Medicine of the Ohio State University have been the direct cause of the hurried undertaking of this work. A few short notes which we thought proper to add here and there, throughout the book, have been placed in []. Columbus, O., David S. White, January, 1908. Paul Fischer. Preface to the Third Edition. The favorable reception which this work has met is emphasized by the fact that it has been translated into both the English and French languages. I am convinced that the concise manner in which I have presented the subject of clinical diagnostics has received friendly recognition from practitioners. In re-writing the third edition I have endeavored to include everything which would contribute toward making it more complete and better. To this end all recent clinical observations and new methods of examination have been employed. The number of illustrations has been increased; and a table in color of the quantitative determination of indican has been added. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of the Diseases of the Small Domestic Animals This book is intended to be a practical text on the Diseases of the Small Domestic Animals. The author feels that it is inadvisable to write an exhaustive treatise on this subject, as it is primarily intended to be a book for student use and for the busy practitioner. An attempt has been made to include most of the important diseases (medical and surgical) of small animals with which the veterinarian comes in contact. It is hoped that it will serve the purpose for which it is written. The author does not claim originality for all the material in the book. The literature and standard books have been consulted freely. For scientific reasons the metric system has been used throughout the text. A table of equivalents in weights and measures has been inserted so that the dosage can be readily determined in the other system, if desired. This was thought to be more desirable than including both under the treatment of each disease. The author wishes to express his appreciation for the valued assistance rendered by his colleagues in the College of Veterinary Medicine, Ohio State University, in the preparation of the manuscript. He is especially indebted to Colonel David S. White, Dean, for his kindness in arranging and correcting the manuscript, and for his advice relative to the subject matter, and in many other ways contributing to the value of the book. The book first offers information on neuropathology, neuroanatomy, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The domesticated animals that have CSF include horses, dogs, pigs, cats, rabbits, and cattle. The text then elaborates on neurologic diseases of apes and monkeys. Discussions focus on confluent leucoencephalosis and perivascular myelosis, encephalopathies and dysenteric syndromes, meningitis, epilepsies, tuberculosis, cerebellar atrophy and experimental manganese poisoning, and choreic syndrome in baboons with corticostriate encephalitis. The publication examines the diseases of the skeletal muscle and hypophysis, including general reactions of muscles to injuries, congenital defects, muscular dystrophies, changes in muscle associated with specific diseases, and tumor. The manuscript also takes a look at inherited diseases and congenital anomalies, protozoan and bacterial infections, and demyelinating or myelinoclastic diseases. The text is a dependable reference for readers interested in comparative neuropathology.
