Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Access to high quality abortion care is essential to women’s health, as evidenced by the dramatic decrease in pregnancy-related morbidity and mortality since the legalization of abortion in the United States, and by high rates of maternal death and complications in those countries where abortion is still provided under unsafe conditions. The past two decades have brought important advances in abortion care as well as increasing cross-disciplinary use of abortion technologies in women’s health care. Abortion is an important option for pregnant women who have serious medical conditions or fetal abnormalities, and fetal reduction techniques are now well-integrated into infertility treatment to reduce the risks of multiple pregnancies resulting from assisted reproductive technologies. Management of Unintended and Abnormal Pregnancy: Comprehensive Abortion Care is the textbook of the National Abortion Federation, and serves as the standard, evidence-based reference text in abortion care. This state-of-the-art textbook provides a comprehensive overview of the public health implications of unsafe abortion and reviews the best surgical and medical practices for pregnancy termination, as well as managing ectopic and other abnormal pregnancies. Management of Unintended and Abnormal Pregnancy: Comprehensive Abortion Care is the leading source for a comprehensive understanding of issues related to unintended and abnormal pregnancy. This textbook: is authored by internationally-known leaders in women's health care; addresses unintended pregnancy and abortion from historical, legal, public health, clinical, and quality care perspectives; includes chapters on pregnancy loss, ectopic pregnancy, gestational trophoblastic disease, and multifetal pregnancy reduction; covers treatment of pregnancies in the first and second trimester by both medical and surgical techniques; and provides resources for clinical, scientific, and social support for the abortion provider and patient.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed overview of the possible risks associated with ART pregnancies and their clinical management. While most pregnancies following Assisted Reproduction Treatment (ART) will progress normally and without any complications to mother or baby, some women who conceive after ART as well as their babies are at increased risk of pregnancy complications. There are some schools of thoughts proposing pregnancies following IVF should be regarded as being “high risk” and requires special attention. There are various reasons why ART pregnancies may be at higher risk – Female and male age factor, increased chance of multiple pregnancies, underlying cause of subfertility (pelvic pathology, uterine pathology, endometrial dysfunction) and potential increase in birth defects. This is an essential read for obstetricians, fertility specialists and Post-graduate trainees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first few months of any pregnancy are of supreme importance to the success of that pregnancy. This statement is so obvious as to be almost a platitude, yet it must be said that no aspect of pregnancy has been more neglected in the human than the first three months. Little is known of the morphological changes that occur at that time and our knowledge of the mechanisms that control this vital stage of pregnancy is almost non-existent. The explanation for this neglect of what is an obvious area for study is the difficulty of obtaining normal material. It is rare to have material to study from a healthy first trimester pregnancy and the study by Hertig and Rock!l) of early conception found by chance in hysterectomy speci mens must be unique. The information that we do have about early pregnancy is mostly gained from animal studies or single miscarriages in humans. Chromosomal defects are common but are not an explanation for the majority of recurrent miscarriages. Obstetricians have hypothesised many causes for this condition and have deve loped numerous metQods for treating it, but the studies have been poorly con trolled so that our understanding of the cause(s) has not advanced. Treatment of women with a history of recurrent miscarriage by paternal leuco cyte infusion (immunotherapy) may be yet another form of treatment that is hailed as a new advance only to be rejected when subject to rigorous testing.

Artificial pregnancy termination is known to be associated with an increased risk of infertility, spontaneous pregnancy loss, and other gestational pathologies. Since family planning is a system for the prevention of unwanted pregnancy, the current situation of the spread of induced abortion in different parts of the world is analyzed. Early pregnancy loss is a wide-ranging problem in medicine and habitual abortion is a real tragedy for women in their childbearing years. The different pathogenetic scenarios of spontaneous pregnancy termination are described and the possible interventions for prevention contributing to beneficial outcomes are discussed.
