Book excerpt: More Than Fluency: The Social, Emotional, and Cognitive Dimensions of Stutteringprovides a thoughtful and contemporary framework for speech-language pathologists and others working with people who stutter. The text focuses on the social, emotional, and cognitive realms of stuttering and offers new insights and applications based on research in the field. It guides the reader through theoretical discussions about the social experiences, emotional complications, and cognitive interpretations that often influence the person who stutters. The text also offers practical strategies for intervention from contributing authors who are prominent theorists, researchers, and practitioners in the field of fluency and stuttering. In line with the current multifactorial view of stuttering, More Than Fluency emphasizes the social, emotional, and cognitive aspects of stuttering, drawing important connections between them. The authors present a variety of therapeutic interventions and techniques along with practical guidelines that have been designed to alleviate distress in those who stutter. Although these interventions differ in approach, each offers their own roadmap to support and empower people who stutter. The idea for this book grew out of the insights gained from listening to both clients and graduate students. Clients wanted to talk about their life experiences as a person who stutters. Graduate students often described their worry and uncertainty when dealing with the emotional and social issues of their clients who stutter. Similarly, many practicing speech-language pathologists also have concerns about treating people who stutter, especially regarding the social, emotional, and cognitive aspects of the disorder, areas not typically taught in traditional coursework. More Than Fluency was developed for practicing speech-language pathologists and other professionals who evaluate and treat people who stutter. It is also intended to be an academic textbook used in graduate courses on fluency and stuttering. This text provides a collection of well-thought-out programs and approaches that help treat the whole person, not just his or her stuttering. The authors believe that this is best practice because successfully treating a person who stutters encompasses treating more than fluency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exercises for Voice Therapy, Third Edition contains 84 exercises contributed from 55 clinicians to assist speech-language pathologists in developing treatment plans and session materials for children and adults with all types of voice disorders. The exercises provide step-by-step instruction of varied difficulty levels. Some are suitable for novice voice clinicians, whereas others require a greater depth of experience to be used most effectively. Similarly, voice clients will find some exercises more challenging than others. Each chapter focuses on a particular topic or parameter of the voice production system that may need to be addressed. The exercises can be used in a variety of ways, depending on the personal approach of each clinician and the needs of the individual client. Some of the exercises offer a basic framework for building an entire session, whereas others may fulfill a more specific need within a broader framework. Each exercise is presented in a consistent format for easy integration into speech-language pathologists’ therapy sessions. New to the Third Edition: *17 new exercises with 8 new contributors (for a total of 84 exercises from 55 contributors). *A new chapter on Counseling in Voice Therapy, containing four new exercises from three new contributors who are experts in the field of counseling. *A new chapter on Adherence and Generalization, addressing two significant and common problems in voice therapy, including three new exercises and a new contributor. *An enhanced chapter on Pediatric Voice Therapy, including three new exercises and two new contributors. *A reorganized chapter on Optimizing Speech Breathing, divided into exercises that focus only on breathing and those that incorporate voice production, to help the clinician select the most appropriate exercises for a given client. *An expanded and reorganized chapter on Special Cases, with chapter sections specifically targeting transgender clients, paradoxical vocal fold motion, client voice problems arising from motor speech disorders, as well as other special populations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What is a great man who has made his mark upon history? Every time, if we think far enough, he is a man who has looked through the confusion of the moment and has seen the moral issue involved; he is a man who has refused to have his sense of justice distorted; he has listened to his conscience until conscience becomes a trumpet call to like-minded men so that they gather about him, and together, with mutual purpose and mutual aid, they make a new period in history” ( Jane Addams, 1860–1935). This is a quote from Jane Addams, the great American settlement activist, reformer, public administrator, and author who was born in 1860 in Cedarville, Illinois, and died in 1935 in Chicago, Illinois. She is without a doubt one of the most important leaders in the history of social work. Her twenty years at Hull House are a testimony of her service to those segments of our population that were in dire need for assistance. Social workers all over our land are carrying her torch in the search of truth and knowledge. We feel most honored to be the heirs of this great tradition of service. We as a nation are beginning to value the importance of trained social workers to intervene following a crisis. A Small Contribution: Memoirs of a Social Worker is both an inspiration and a tool for those men and women in the trenches, heirs of the legacy of the founders of the social work profession.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ten volumes of "Handbook of Pragmatics Highlights" focus on the most salient topics in the field of pragmatics, thus dividing its wide interdisciplinary spectrum in a transparent and manageable way. While the other volumes select specific philosophical, cognitive, grammatical, social, cultural, variational, or discursive angles, this fourth volume is dedicated to the empirical investigation of the way human beings organize their interaction in natural environments and how they use talk for accomplishing actions and their contexts. Starting from Goffman s observation that interaction exhibits a structure in its own right that cannot be reduced to the psychological properties of the individual nor to society, it contains a selection of articles documenting the various levels of interactional organization. In addition to treatments of basic concepts such as sequence, participation, prosody and style and some topical articles on phenomena like reported speech and listener response, it also includes overviews of specific traditions (conversation analysis, ethnomethodology) and articles on eminent authors (Goffman, Sacks) who had a formative influence on the field."
