Despite hundreds of prescription and over-the-counter products that target "the aches and pains of arthritis," it is frequently misunderstood. There are dozens of types of arthritis, some serious and life-threatening. Figuring out what type of arthritis a person has is key to the treatment and overall risk of disability a patient may have. This guide provides a straightforward and clear examination of arthritis and serves as a complete home reference for anyone.

Book excerpt: Chronic pain is exactly that, chronic. There is no magic bullet that will cure it. Doctors have learned that a collaborative approach between physicians and specialists using multiple approaches to manage chronic pain is most effective. As awareness grows among the medical community about the causes and effects of pain, a wider effort is under way to educate both patients and primary care physicians-who represent the front line in pain treatment-about its effective management. This book looks at the disease process known as chronic pain. Through stories that describe our struggles with pain, readers will learn how pain manifests in the body, what happens in specific pain conditions, and why the multidisciplinary approach to pain management is best. Persistence is part of human nature. Despite the physical limitations, mental strain and a medical system less than well-equipped to serve them, people with pain continue to hope, and to advocate for themselves and others, as they strive to recapture vitality in their lives.

Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of chapters, of which two chapters review the treatment strategies for fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), and one chapter describes the role of mitochondrial dysfunction and related pathology in the FMS pathogenesis and reviews the appropriate treatment moieties. This book chapter reviews the phenotypic changes that alter the diagnostic criteria and disease activity measures when FMS is comorbid in three potentially painful selected rheumatic diseases. The introductory preface takes the form of an editorial in which I challenge the concept that inflammation, measured as cytokine activity, plays a prominent role in the FMS pathogenesis. All of these chapters and the Preface are authoritative and accomplished discussions that provide novel perspectives on rarely addressed FMS topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the potential problems that can obscure any scientific enterprise, inconsistent results across studies are bound to occur. How are we to decide what is true? Let's turn to philosophy for a reasonable answer. The mathematician-philosopher Bertrand Russell approached a similar problem in his monograph The Problems of Philosophy (Russell B, 1912). He addressed the following question: How do we know that anything is "real"? Is the only reality subjective and simply in our minds, as Bishop Berkley challenged, or can we mostly believe the objective reality? His pragmatic answer: All possibilities may be true, but when the preponderance of evidence indicates that objective reality and knowledge are the most probable case, go with it. If the preponderance of all evidence about the clinical description of fibromyalgia and it's pathogenic mechanisms and treatment strategies indicate a highly probable interrelated hypothesis, go with it. The direction of the literature on the whole trumps the less likely tangents. At the same time, remember Bertrand Russell and his pragmatic answer, and keep an open mind.
