Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays, which derive from a symposium held at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005, tells the story of how medieval art was collected by both individuals and institutions in the American Midwest. This book will appeal to both medievalists and scholars of nineteenth- and twentieth century American history. In addition, it will also appeal to scholars who are interested in museum studies and the history of collecting. The essays in the first section, “Collecting and Displaying Medieval Art,” consider the formation of medieval art collections at influential cultural institutions in three of the most important centers of industry and culture in the Midwest: Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland. The second section, “Medieval Art as Inspiration and Education,” examines the motives of both private donors and museum professionals in forming collections and establishing period rooms and cloistered spaces at museums in Toledo, Kansas City, and St. Louis, among others. At the opposite end of the spectrum was a new trend in curatorial practice, beginning in the 1930s, that favored the dismantling of period rooms and espoused displaying historical works of art in more distinctly modern settings, a theme that pervades section three, “Medieval Art and Modernism.” An essay on medieval art in Midwestern university art museums and another one that considers the impact of works from medieval collections in special exhibitions serve as a remarkable coda to the rest of the volume. Two appendices follow this, one that provides an overview of medieval art collections in Midwestern university museums and another which provides a biographical sketch of prominent dealers of medieval art from 1900-1950.

Book excerpt: Included in this inventory is large-scale sculpture in wood and stone, from sites scattered throughout Western Europe and executed roughly between the middle of the eleventh and the end of the twelfth century. Elements from such well-known monuments as Saint-Lazare at Autun, Saint-Pierre at Cluny, Saint-Michel at Cuxa, and churches of Metz, Parthenay, Provins and Reims figure in this catalogue, as do pieces with less familiar provenances like Saint-Laurent l'Abbaye in Nivernais, Saint-Melaine at Preuilly-sur-Claise in Touraine, Saint-Eyre at Toul, and Saint-Vincent near Digne in Provence. Each entry, including basic data, description and analysis, is illustrated by one or more photographs. A list of pieces presumed to be of doubtful authenticity concludes the volume, along with provenance and iconographic indexes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the first full-length study of its kind in English, Marsha Morton argues that no artist represented the shift from tradition to innovation in the Wilhelmine Empire (1870s - 1880s) more compellingly than Max Klinger. Morton makes an interdisciplinary examination of Klinger’s early prints and drawings within the context of Wilhelmine transformations, coming to the conclusion that the artist’s work revealed the psychological and biological underpinnings of modern rational man whose drives and passions undermined bourgeois constructions of society.

Book excerpt: "This exhibition is the first to offer an extensive overview of the Museum's holdings of early Central European drawings, many of which were acquired in the last two decades. An emphasis on works by later sixteenth- and seventeenth-century artists is balanced by a selection of German drawings from the fifteenth and earlier sixteenth century, of which some of the most exceptional ones--including works by Albrecht Deurer--entered the Museum with The Robert Lehman Collection in 1975."--Publisher's website.
