This book was released on 1986 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-Deception and the Common Life investigates the topic of self-deception from three points of view: philosophical psychology, ethics, and theology. Empirical evidence and an «ordinary language» analysis support the case that the linguistic expression 'self-deception' is literally meaningful and that the language of the common life can be trusted. After critically analyzing the cognition, translation, and action accounts, along with the contributions of Freud and Sartre, Steffen proposes a new synthetic «emotional perception» account, one that avoids paradox. Giving attention to relevant moral issues, he argues that self-deception is not immoral, but represents a peculiar form of akrasia. Finally, because theologians employ 'self-deception' to describe the cognitive component of sin, Steffen considers the logic of theological self-deception. His study seeks an «intimate acquaintance» with self-deception and exemplifies a method of analysis relevant to constructive theological inquiry.

Book excerpt: “In the heart of this world, the Lord of life, who loves us so much, is always present. He does not abandon us, he does not leave us alone, for he has united himself definitively to our earth, and his love constantly impels us to find new ways forward. Praise be to him!” – Pope Francis, Laudato Si’ In his second encyclical, Laudato Si’: On the Care of Our Common Home, Pope Francis draws all Christians into a dialogue with every person on the planet about our common home. We as human beings are united by the concern for our planet, and every living thing that dwells on it, especially the poorest and most vulnerable. Pope Francis’ letter joins the body of the Church’s social and moral teaching, draws on the best scientific research, providing the foundation for “the ethical and spiritual itinerary that follows.” Laudato Si’ outlines: The current state of our “common home” The Gospel message as seen through creation The human causes of the ecological crisis Ecology and the common good Pope Francis’ call to action for each of us Our Sunday Visitor has included discussion questions, making it perfect for individual or group study, leading all Catholics and Christians into a deeper understanding of the importance of this teaching.

Book excerpt: Deriving his theoretical model from systems theory and the Frankfurt school, David Kaufmann argues that the consolidation of economic theory and the critical acceptance of the novel in late Georgian Britain were central to the cultural work if describing and legitimating the commercial state and the society that sustained it. By juxtaposing political texts (from Hume to Mill), moral philosophy, and classical economic theory (from Smith to Mill), and novels by Radcliffe, Austen, Scott, and Shelley, Kaufmann shows how these different discourses worry and attempt to think through the problems of justice and citizenship that mark liberalism and modernity. "This is the most consistently interesting and coherently argued treatment of political economy and literature that I've read. It will find an audience among both literary historians and cultural critics. Indeed, I predict that some of Kaufmann's formulations could influence the way this subject is addressed by future scholars. The Business of Common Life is a book that any student of the subject will have to read and consider carefully."--Mary Poovey, The Johns Hopkins University

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Claims of Kinfolk, Dylan Penningroth uncovers an extensive informal economy of property ownership among slaves and sheds new light on African American family and community life from the heyday of plantation slavery to the "freedom generation" of the 1870s. By focusing on relationships among blacks, as well as on the more familiar struggles between the races, Penningroth exposes a dynamic process of community and family definition. He also includes a comparative analysis of slavery and slave property ownership along the Gold Coast in West Africa, revealing significant differences between the African and American contexts. Property ownership was widespread among slaves across the antebellum South, as slaves seized the small opportunities for ownership permitted by their masters. While there was no legal framework to protect or even recognize slaves' property rights, an informal system of acknowledgment recognized by both blacks and whites enabled slaves to mark the boundaries of possession. In turn, property ownership--and the negotiations it entailed--influenced and shaped kinship and community ties. Enriching common notions of slave life, Penningroth reveals how property ownership engendered conflict as well as solidarity within black families and communities. Moreover, he demonstrates that property had less to do with individual legal rights than with constantly negotiated, extralegal social ties.

Excerpt: ...his position breaks awfully upon him, when his trifling has made it past repair. To the indolent and idle I have nothing to say about strength of character. They have many stages in their moral development to pass through before they can even reach a conception of it. But on those who are striving to use aright their opportunities here I would urge most earnestly the great precept "Strengthen yourselves," and I would wish to point out some ways in which I think they may be aided in the formation of their character. I. Strength of character is not to be obtained through the intellect or through the feelings alone. Either of these exclusively followed can at the best only give principles of conduct and action which satisfy the individual, and the practical result of such a purely individual possession can only be bigotry, prejudice, narrowness or fanaticism, not real strength. It matters not what the opinions may be, or from what source they come, if you hold them only because they satisfy you, and do not care to compare them with those of others, and test them by reference to the practice of others, and try to transform your life into accordance with the lives of those around you, if you do not do this you may be obstinate, stubbom, arrogant, but you are not strong, and no mere hardening of your heart, no elaborate process of self-petrifaction will give you strength of character. You must not contemptuously withdraw from those around you because you are in earnest and they are frivolous; learn to express your earnestness not in the fiery shape into which it seems most spontaneously to run, but in terms in which it may be intelligible even to the lightest hearted. 2. If you would be strong, you must not from any feeling of...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Christ and the Common Life Luke Bretherton provides an introduction to historical and contemporary theological reflection on politics and opens up a compelling vision for a Christian commitment to democracy. In dialogue with Scripture and various traditions, Bretherton examines the dynamic relationship between who we are in relation to God and who we are as moral and political animals. He addresses fundamental political questions about poverty and injustice, forming a common life with strangers, and handling power constructively. And through his analysis of debates concerning, among other things, race, class, economics, the environment, and interfaith relations, he develops an innovative political theology of democracy as a way through which Christians can speak and act faithfully within our current context. Read as a whole, or as stand-alone chapters, the book guides readers through the political landscape and identifies the primary vocabulary, ideas, and schools of thought that shape Christian reflection on politics in the West. Ideal for the classroom, Christ and the Common Life equips students to understand politics and its positive and negative role in fostering neighbor love.
