This book was released on 2016-08-03 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief and Impartial History of the Life and Actions of Andrew Jackson: President of the United States It may be set down as almost a miracle, that he found no lawyer Settled in 'nashville, where he first set up his staff of rest. Consequently he was welcomed with a shower of briefs, and the very morning succeeding his arrival he issued no less than seventy writs. His presence soon became a terror to the debtors in the place, of whom the number was not small, and he was consequently involved in a great many broils, through which his native energy carried him with more credit to his courage than to his discretion. In 1789, Mr. Jackson formed an acquaintance that was to have a powerful influence on his future reputation and happiness. We would fain pass over this matter in silence, in mercy to him, as major Eaton has done, were it consistent with the duty of a biographer. As it is, we shall merely detail the facts relating to this connexion, without comment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The project is now producing a series of seventeen volumes that will bring Jackson's most important papers to the public in easily readable form."--

Book Synopsis The Papers of Andrew Jackson, 1833 by : Dan Feller
Download or read book The Papers of Andrew Jackson, 1833 written by Dan Feller and published by Univ Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents full annotated text of five hundred documents from Andrew Jackson's fifth presidential year. They include his private memoranda, intimate family letters, presidential message drafts, and correspondence with government and military officers, diplomats, Indian leaders, political friends and foes, and citizens throughout the country. The year 1833 began with a crisis in South Carolina, where a state convention had declared the federal tariff law null and void and pledged resistance by armed force if necessary. Jackson countered by rallying public opinion against the nullifiers, quietly positioning troops and warships, and procuring a "force bill" from Congress to compel collection of customs duties. The episode ended peaceably after South Carolina accepted a compromise tariff devised by Jackson's arch-rival Henry Clay. But Clay's surprise cooperation with South Carolina's John C. Calhoun foretold a new opposition coalition against Jackson. With nullification checked, Jackson embarked in June on a triumphal tour to cement his newfound popularity in the North. Ecstatic crowds greeted him in Philadelphia, New York, and Boston, and Harvard awarded him a degree. But Jackson's fragile health broke under the strain, forcing him to cut the tour short. Meanwhile Jackson pursued his campaign against the Bank of the United States, whose recharter he had vetoed in 1832. Charging the Bank with political meddling and corruption, Jackson determined to cripple it by removing federal deposits to state banks. But Treasury secretary William John Duane refused either to give the necessary order or resign. In September Jackson dismissed him and installed Roger Taney to implement the removal. Jackson's bold assumption of authority energized supporters but outraged opponents, prompting Clay to introduce a Senate resolution of censure. The year closed with Jackson girding for further battle over the Bank, pursuing schemes to pry the province of Texas loose from Mexico, and trying to stem rampant land frauds that his own Indian removal policy had unleashed against Creek Indians in Alabama. Unfolding these stories and many more, this volume offers an incomparable window into Andrew Jackson, his presidency, and America itself in 1833.
Book Synopsis Andrew Jackson in Context by : Matthew Warshauer
Download or read book Andrew Jackson in Context written by Matthew Warshauer and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a century historians have been unable to agree about Andrew Jackson. Was he as Robert Remini has insisted for more than forty years a masterful politician who shaped the modern presidency and ushered in an era of new democratic politics? Or was he, as James C. Curtis and Andrew Burstein have argued, a loose cannon who possessed no vision for the American republic? What historians do not doubt is Jackson's significant and lasting impact on American politics and the nation. To fully assess his role and legacy, one must explore the interaction between his personal and political motivations and the larger developments of the early republic and antebellum period. In Andrew Jackson in Context, Matthew Warshauer, Professor of History at Central Connecticut State University and author of Andrew Jackson and the Politics of Martial Law, offers a detailed look at differing historians' views on Jackson and places these perspectives within an accessible biography of the seventh president. Warshauer insists that any study of Jackson must place him within the context of his time and that his motivations regarding such pivotal issues as economics and the preservation of the Union cannot be divorced from the very real and turbulent politics of the Jacksonian period. The author discounts the psychological driven theories of authors like Curtis and Burstein, though recognises that Jackson was often a vain, blustering, power-driven man who when he deemed it necessary had no qualms about violating the Constitution. This is an engaging, well-written biography that is perfect for students and those who want to understand not only Jackson and his era, but what historians have written about him.
