Book excerpt: Religious thinkers have overlooked an important truth: God's act of creation is interpersonal and immediately causes only perfect creatures with perfect freedom to respond. Uniquely integrating and deepening what traditional theists have always believed, the author relates the untold story of freedom in creation. Particular attention is given to the unconscious dimension of the mind and to its roots in the spiritual. The book highlights the infinite freedom of God and the perfect finite freedom of all persons within the Creator's activity. Awakening to God's gift of two different, but intimately related creations...absolute (out of nothing) and redemptive (out of something)...twenty-first century believers are offered a momentous opportunity for humility and joy. Readers are given a whole new vista for understanding suffering and love.

Book excerpt: This research tests the validity of the assertion in the public administration literature that the career progressions of city managers consistently begin with service as an assistant to a city manager, lead to managing a small city, and end with city managers progressing to management of larger and larger cities until retirement. This research expands quantitatively upon recent research that suggests there are multiple career paths to becoming a city manager by effectively operationalizing city population as the independent variable and using individual city manager career progressions as the dependent variable. The intervening variables, as established and operationalized in prior research, are age, gender, tenure, education, educated in state where serving as city manager, previous city management experience, pre-city management experience, and council and mayoral electoral structure. These variables not only allow for examination of career paths, but also permit close examination of the demographic correlates of city managers according to city population. As a result, two new city manager career paths emerged, thus adding support for recent suggestions in the city management literature that there are indeed significant differences in the career paths of city managers.
Book Synopsis City Executives by : David N. Ammons
Download or read book City Executives written by David N. Ammons and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the work life of mayors, city managers, and other top executives in city government. Based on a survey of 527 city executives and enlivened with numerous anecdotes, the book documents time allocation patterns and work routines. City Executives makes comparisons with previous studies to show how city executives compare with managers in other types of organizations. The authors also note how city managers' role has changed over a 20-year period. City executives are shown to be like their private-sector counterparts. For example, they function at a relentless pace, are frequently interrupted in their work, and are generally overburdened. However, because city workers operate in an environment open to public scrutiny, they are left with only a minority of their professional time to attend to matters that they describe as priorities. Instead, they must constantly respond to intergovernmental demands, emergencies, and the needs of citizens and legislative officials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: City management in developing countries is a quickly growing area in current public administration literature. However, little research material can be found regarding the management of cities. Demonstrating the issues in this field, Challenges in City Management: A Case Study Approach brings the sometimes dry theories and concepts of urban planning and management to life. The author uses case studies to demonstrate "who," "what," "why," and "how," dramatically increasing readers’ ability to comprehend and apply the theories. Incorporating urban management and organizational management theories with actual practice, the author presents case studies based on observations made during her extensive experience. She offers multiple examples of common contemporary city topics ranging from personnel, policy-making, housing, homelessness, transportation, and budgeting. Each study describes and analyzes a scenario, identifying the economic and political factors as well as the often conflicting players and interest groups. The book provides enhanced understanding of the complex environment city administrators work in, helping readers develop improved decision-making and problem-solving skills through the study of real issues city administrators have experienced. The case study methodology used supplies information that is immediately applicable to real-world situations, making it a resource that city administrators can use to improve their public administration and governance skills.

Book excerpt: Local government has rapidly become both more important and more complex and the quality of municipal management is becoming more significant every day as local governments deal with a vast array of organizational and community challenges. The Role of Canadian City Managers brings together experienced city managers and municipal chief administrative officers (CAOs) across Canada to analyse the daily issues that they face. Each chapter deals with a particular issue or challenge, such as council/staff relations, collaborative initiatives, and crisis readiness. The book contributes to the literature on local government and public administration by providing insights from the "real time" lived experiences of city managers, spoken in their own words. The book also speculates about the contemporary leadership role of the city manager and the future of the city management profession. The Role of Canadian City Managers is a useful resource for scholars and students of local government and public administration, as well as public servants who work with or aspire to leadership roles within local government.
