Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Churches of Rouen The descriptive chapters of this little book are the result of personal observations made during a visit to Rouen in May 1900, undertaken for the purpose of examining and photographing the chief churches of the city. While thus employed I made use of sundry guide-books, French and English, and collected all the information I could from vergers and others connected with the churches. The scaffolding which at that time covered the west front of the Cathedral rendered it impossible for me to examine this part of the church; any description, moreover, that I could have given would have been of little value in pointing out features to be studied, as many, when the scaffolding is removed on the completion of the restoration, will have been altered, if they have not entirely vanished. The west front of St. Maclou was also undergoing some repairs, and owing to the overhead wires of the tramways it is no longer possible to get a satisfactory general photographic view of St. Ouen from the N.W., so that in three cases the blocks illustrating the book have been made from photographs taken some time ago; all the rest are from my own negatives taken in 1900. I obtained much historical information from a book published in 1847, entitled Album Rouennais, illustrated by lithographs and written by Charles Richard, Keeper of the Municipal Archives and permanent Secretary of the Royal Academy of Rouen; also from a charming and picturesquely written book, the Story of Rouen in the "Mediaeval Towns" series by Theodore Andrea Cook, published in 1899. My thanks are due to Canon Barrie for permission kindly granted to photograph the interior of the Cathedral, and to M. Edouard Julien, the intelligent sacristan of St. Ouen (well known to most visitors to Rouen), who obtained for me a like permission from the Cure of his church. Book Synopsis Cathedrals, Communities and Conflict in the Anglo-Norman World by : Paul Dalton
Download or read book Cathedrals, Communities and Conflict in the Anglo-Norman World written by Paul Dalton and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true importance of cathedrals during the Anglo-Norman period is here brought out, through an examination of the most important aspects of their history. Cathedrals dominated the ecclesiastical (and physical) landscape of the British Isles and Normandy in the middle ages; yet, in comparison with the history of monasteries, theirs has received significantly less attention. This volume helps to redress the balance by examining major themes in their development between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. These include the composition, life, corporate identity and memory of cathedral communities; the relationships, sometimes supportive, sometimes conflicting, that they had with kings (e.g. King John), aristocracies, and neighbouring urban and religious communities; the importance of cathedrals as centres of lordship and patronage; their role in promoting and utilizing saints' cults (e.g. that of St Thomas Becket); episcopal relations; and the involvement of cathedrals in religious and political conflicts, and in the settlement of disputes. A critical introduction locates medieval cathedrals in space and time, and against a backdrop of wider ecclesiastical change in the period. Contributors: Paul Dalton, Charles Insley, Louise J. Wilkinson, Ann Williams, C.P. Lewis, RichardAllen, John Reuben Davies, Thomas Roche, Stephen Marritt, Michael Staunton, Sheila Sweetinburgh, Paul Webster, Nicholas Vincent
