Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recipient of the 2013 PROSE Awards Architecture & Urban Planning honorable mention Just to the south of modern Cairo stands the historic enclave known as Old Cairo, which grew up in and around the Roman fortress of Babylon, and which today hosts a unique collection of monuments that attest to the shared cultural heritage of ancient Egyptians, Christians, Jews, and Muslims. In this lavishly illustrated celebration of a very special place, renowned photographer Sherif Sonbol's remarkable images of the fortress, churches, synagogue, and mosque illuminate the living fabric of the ancient and medieval stones, while Gawdat Gabra describes the history of Old Cairo from the time of the ancient Egyptians and the Romans to the founding of the first Muslim city of al-Fustat. Stefan Reif focuses on the Jewish history of the area, exploring the famous Genizah documents found in the Ben Ezra Synagogue that tell so much about everyday life in medieval Egypt. Gertrud van Loon looks at the early Coptic Christian churches, some of the oldest in the world, and Tarek Swelim describes the arrival of the Muslims in the seventh century, their establishment of al-Fustat on the edge of Old Cairo, and the building of the Mosque of 'Amr ibn al-'As, the oldest mosque in Africa.

Book excerpt: Mr. Sladen found that Cairo included a glorious mediaeval city of the Arabian Nights, with innumerable monuments of medieval Arab architecture and unspoiled native life. To this he strives to call attention in a book that he hopes to make "chatty and interesting." And he unquestionably succeeds. Mr. Sladen at his best is easily capable of writing. By reading the book the toursit will learn "How to Shop in Cairo," as well as how to enjoy the "Humors of the Esbekiya" and countless other entertaining features of this variegated modern capital. He will even know the "Artist's Bits in Cairo," and will receive explicit directions how to find them. In other words, he need no longer be a "tame tourist" in the hands of a masterful dragoman.

Book Synopsis The Christian Epigraphy of Egypt and Nubia by : Jacques van der Vliet
Download or read book The Christian Epigraphy of Egypt and Nubia written by Jacques van der Vliet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-20 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected Studies CS1070 The present book collects 31 articles that Jacques van der Vliet, a leading scholar in the field of Coptic Studies (Leiden University / Radboud University, Nijmegen), has published since 1999 on Christian inscriptions from Egypt and Nubia. These inscriptions are dated between the third/fourth and the fourteenth centuries, and are often written in Coptic and/or Greek, once in Latin, and sometimes (partly) in Arabic, Syriac or Old Nubian. They include inscriptions on tomb stones, walls of religious buildings, tools, vessels, furniture, amulets and even texts on luxury garments. Whereas earlier scholars in the field of Coptic Studies often focused on either Coptic or Greek, Van der Vliet argues that inscriptions in different languages that appear in the same space or on the same kind of objects should be examined together. In addition, he aims to combine the information from documentary texts, archaeological remains and inscriptions, in order to reconstruct the economic, social and religious life of monastic or civil communities. He practiced this methodology in his studies on the Fayum, Wadi al-Natrun, Sohag, Western Thebes and the region of Aswan and Northern Nubia, which are all included in this book.
