Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church in the West Indies The fact that the British West Indies include eight groups of Colonies, which are politically quite separate, and have come into the empire at different times and in various ways, made it worth considering whether the plan of this book should not be to give a separate account of each Colony or group. But behind their differences there are certain common features which give them a partial unity, and after deliberation it seemed better to make this a history of the Church in the islands as a whole, with glimpses from time to time at the individual Colonies. The primacy of Jamaica has necessarily given to that Colony the most frequent mention, but it is as typical to some extent of them all that it has been taken. I have endeavoured to show the connection of the stream of Church history here with the general history of the Church of England on the one hand, and with v, the social life of the Colonies on the other. Of materials for history there was abundance: able men have written histories of many of these Colonies; and for recent years journals and reports of Synods and other Church literature have been available. My thanks are due to the secretaries of many Societies, - both Church and Nonconformist; and the libraries of the Church House and the Royal Colonial Institute have been invaluable. Book Synopsis Scotland and the Caribbean, c.1740-1833 by : Michael Morris
Download or read book Scotland and the Caribbean, c.1740-1833 written by Michael Morris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-12 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book participates in the modern recovery of the memory of the long-forgotten relationship between Scotland and the Caribbean. Drawing on theoretical paradigms of world literature and transnationalism, it argues that Caribbean slavery profoundly shaped Scotland’s economic, social and cultural development, and draws out the implications for current debates on Scotland’s national narratives of identity. Eighteenth- to nineteenth-century Scottish writers are re-examined in this new light. Morris explores the ways that discourses of "improvement" in both Scotland and the Caribbean are mediated by the modes of pastoral and georgic which struggle to explain and contain the labour conditions of agricultural labourers, both free and enslaved. The ambivalent relationship of Scottish writers, including Robert Burns, to questions around abolition allows fresh perspectives on the era. Furthermore, Morris considers the origins of a hybrid Scottish-Creole identity through two nineteenth-century figures - Robert Wedderburn and Mary Seacole. The final chapter moves forward to consider the implications for post-devolution (post-referendum) Scotland. Underpinning this investigation is the conviction that collective memory is a key feature which shapes behaviour and beliefs in the present; the recovery of the memory of slavery is performed here in the interests of social justice in the present.

Book Synopsis The Other Black Church by : Joseph L. Tucker Edmonds
Download or read book The Other Black Church written by Joseph L. Tucker Edmonds and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-12-02 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Other Black Church: Alternative Christian Movements and the Struggle for Black Freedom examines the movements led by Father Divine, Charles Mason, and Albert Cleage (later known as Jaramogi Abebe Agyeman) as alternative Christian movements in the middle of the twentieth century that radically re-envisioned the limits and possibilities of Black citizenship. These movements not only rethink the value and import of Christian texts and reimagined the role of the Black Christian prophetic tradition, but they also outlined a new model of protest that challenged the language and logic of Black essentialism, economic development, and the role of the state. By placing these movements in conversation with the long history of Black theology and Black religious studies, this book suggests that alternative Christian movements are essential for thinking about African American critiques of and responses to the failures of U.S.-based democracy. These prophets of Black theological thought and their attention to the limits of the state and traditional Black religious formations are most fully appreciated when studied in light of their conversations and interactions with other key Black prophetic and theological figures of the mid-twentieth century. Ultimately, The Other Black Church will use those conversations and archives from these movements to highlight their protest of the racial state, to explore the limits of the Black church, and to argue for their continued significance for thinking about the variety and vibrancy of Black protest, specifically Black religious protest, during the twentieth century.
Book Synopsis Print and Power in Early Modern Europe (1500–1800) by : Nina Lamal
Download or read book Print and Power in Early Modern Europe (1500–1800) written by Nina Lamal and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Print, in the early modern period, could make or break power. This volume addresses one of the most urgent and topical questions in early modern history: how did European authorities use a new medium with such tremendous potential? The eighteen contributors develop new perspectives on the relationship between the rise of print and the changing relationships between subjects and rulers by analysing print’s role in early modern bureaucracy, the techniques of printed propaganda, genres, and strategies of state communication. While print is often still thought of as an emancipating and disruptive force of change in early modern societies, the resulting picture shows how instrumental print was in strengthening existing power structures. Contributors: Renaud Adam, Martin Christ, Jamie Cumby, Arthur der Weduwen, Nora Epstein, Andreas Golob, Helmer Helmers, Jan Hillgärtner, Rindert Jagersma, Justyna Kiliańczyk-Zięba, Nina Lamal, Margaret Meserve, Rachel Midura, Gautier Mingous, Ernesto E. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jamaica and Friends' Missions Jamaica is the largest of the British West India Islands, and as such has a warm place in the hearts of English Christians, as well as in the hearts Of Americans. It is a mission field of exceptional interest to the Free Churches on both sides Of the Atlantic. Besides the black and the colored population, and a sprinkling of Chi nese, there are about East Indians. Having myself traveled through India with its people, I am in keen sympathy with these East Indians as colonists, whether in Africa or in the West Indies. They are an industrious, lovable, gentle people, saturated with relig ious thought, and, when converted to Christ, ready like the wise men of the East to lay their treasures at His feet. There are in Jamaica 024 Government Schools with an enrolment of 59 children. A large quantity Of the land is happily in small holdings, no less than plots not exceeding five acres. There are deposits in the Government Savings Banks, proving some prosper ity and thrift among the laboring classes. Amid such a population there is an open door for an aggressive and evangelical church like the Society Of Friends. For a long series of years our Society has ex tended missionary efforts to Iamaica, and the important missionary stations on the Island, the history of which will be told in the following pages, is the legitimate apos tolic succession of these earlier laborers.
