Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church in the City If by its profound philosophy that monument of genius, piety, and erudition, "The City of God," was "the death warrant of ancient society," it was also, despite its mystic extravagances, the charter and vindication of the social purposes and program of Christianity. Nevertheless, the world yet awaits the fulfillment of the divine ideal in the production, through the agency of the people of God, of a society adapted to all the needs of man, a society that both permits and assists his complete development in the parts and qualities of his being. Is this achievement possible of realization? Not if Rousseau was correct. "We are told," he says in treating the subject of civic religion, "that a nation of Christians would form the most perfect society conceivable. In this supposition I see only one great difficulty - that a society of true Christians would be no longer a society of men." Pessimism establishes its logic by definitions. Schopenhauer, for example, "asserts that speculation is for action, wisdom for life, and then sophistically argues that we should not expect a metaphysician to be a saint." Christianity cannot organize society if it is itself inhuman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Our Author, in this interesting and valuable volume, calls special attention to the fact, that the true Church is founded on Christ, sustained by Christ, aye, is absolutely nothing without Christ - a simple truth, but Oh! How often forgotten! Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Moravian Church in New York City Altho frequent references are made to the work of this church in various historical writings, no one has ever written a history of the Moravian Church in New York City. Believing that this mat ter was too long deferred, the Elders and Trustees of the First Church fraternally requested the present pastor to bring to light the valuable information locked up in the abundant manuscripts and records preserved in the archives of the congregation. Not without a feeling of unworthiness for so immrtant a task, the pastor began his labor of love, and now, after two years of careful research, this volume, entitled A History of the Moravian Church in New York City, is given to the public. The principal sources of information contained in the history. Are the diaries, records, and numerous papers found in the archives of the congregation. The Provincial Archives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, were also laid under contribution. Additional information was found in various books by Moravian authors, 'in numerous histories of New York, and in other litera ture bearing on the subject. If this history shall add to the appreciation of the value of Moravian labors in New York City and elsewhere, and inspire a deeper love for the Moravian Church, the writer will feel amply rewarded for his labors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Familiar Conversational: History of the Evangelical Churches of New-York Have you nothing more to tell us concerning the history of this old and venerable church? I should like to hear more too about all the early Christian churches in this city; but perhaps your time may be too precious, and can be more profitably spent in other ways. Uncle. Oh no, my boys. Nothing can give me greater pleasure, than to hear you express the wish to learn something concerning the early introduction of Christianity and its institu tions into our city: and it will be a source of high gratification to myself, as well as some improvement to you, I hope, to sit down and talk ove1 with you the early history of our city churches. And I am glad that your interest in the subject has led you to mention it; but at the same time that I make known to you my sin ceie willingness to spend some portion of my time so profitably, as in conversations with you upon this interesting subject, I would remind you, beforehand, that it will require consider able patience, and will perhaps draw upon your fund of self-denial, to sit hour after hour, and perform what some people would call the drudgery of listening.
