Book excerpt: This work endeavors to set forth the teaching of the Catholic Church concerning the State. In the first chapter will be found the most authoritative doctrine that we possess regarding the nature, authority, and object of the State, and the relations that should subsist between the State and the Church. Practically all the rest of the book is devoted to the development and specific application of these general principles. The second chapter discusses certain declarations of the first which have been the subject of more or less controversy. Chapters III and IV present a comprehensive treatment and defense of the doctrine that governments and rulers derive their moral authority from God through the people. The development of this doctrine in Catholic political theory, and its bearing upon modern democratic theory, are treated at length in the next three chapters. It is believed Fhat these three chapters constitute a distinct contribution to the history of American political principles. The remaining chapters deal mainly with the purpose and scope of the State and the ethical relations existing between it and the citizen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite continuing ageist beliefs that sexuality is a privilege designed only for the young and physically healthy, research continues to indicate that the majority of older adults maintain interest in sexuality and may engage in fulfilling sexual behavior well into their last decade of life. Unfortunately, many professionals remain unaware of general knowledge of elderly sexuality, including the expected and normal physiological changes that can occur within the context of both male and female aging. The presence of chronic illness and other medical problems certainly can influence the expression of an aging adult’s sexuality, and emergent research suggests that there are effective ways to cope with menopause, heart disease, arthritis, incontinence, diabetes, sleep disorders, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and erectile dysfunction (ED), among others. Dramatic changes have taken place within the last decade alone in terms of non-surgical treatment for incontinence and ED, with forms of sex therapy, biofeedback, and PDE-5 inhibitors. Regrettably, many aging adults and their care providers remain unaware of their increased risk factors for STDs, including HIV infection via lack of knowledge, changes in the vaginal lining, and typical declines in immune function. Estimates suggest that by the year 2020, more than half of all individuals living with HIV will be over the age of 50. Although some high quality professional books are available for clinicians, they tend to be disjointed research bibliographies, edited volumes on a narrowly focused aspect of elderly sexuality, or texts that are more than 10 years old. With the extent of new information available regarding sexuality and aging, an up to date, empirically based text is necessary.

Book excerpt: By itself or in combination with an affective disorder, early onset schizophrenia (EOS) — the onset of symptoms before 18 years of age — can create severe deficits in young people’s academic performance, family and peer relationships, and even the ability to acquire new skills. The relative rarity of the condition, meanwhile, can leave school personnel unsure of how to meet — or even recognize — student needs. Identifying, Assessing, and Treating Early Onset Schizophrenia at School emphasizes the importance of providing teachers and students alike with the support needed to enhance academic performance and improve social skills of children and adolescents with EOS within educational settings. In addition, its evidence-based framework enables school professionals to achieve greater confidence and accuracy in identifying students with EOS and provide appropriate services, both in special education and general classes. In this authoritative and accessible volume, experts offer the most salient information on early onset schizophrenia, including: Contributing factors and risk factors. Prevalence and epidemiology. Screening and assessment procedures. Guidelines for determining eligibility for special education programs under IDEIA and Section 504. Latest findings on school-based and off-campus interventions for EOS. A useful resource appendix. Identifying, Assessing, and Treating Early Onset Schizophrenia at School gives school psychologists and allied education professionals both a practical understanding of this disabling condition and the most up-to-date strategies for providing earlier and effective interventions.
