Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church for Americans The concern which this book manifests for the Ecclesiastical side of Christianity and the little it has to say about its spiritual and practical aspects, is due to what the writer considers to be, just now, the special religious need of our time and country. This is not instruction in the moral requirements of Christianity so much as the establishment of the fact that Christ founded a Church which has come down to us, and with some branch of which it is the privilege and duty of all to identify themselves. The idea that one Church is as good as another and that consequently it prac tically makes no difference to which we belong, is responsible for the enormous non-church element of the United States, which, according to the last census, amounted to more than half of the whole population, and for the loose hold which all bodies of Christians have upon their constituency. Enemies are actively attempting to undermine the religious institutions of the country, while friends are earnestly proposing many plans for removing their abuses, and increasing their efficiency. Under these circumstances, it appears to the Author that a fair and impartial account of the Church in America is calculated to supply encouragement, and to suggest valuable ideas. The historical portion of the subject exhibits a remote branch of the Reformed Church, planted amid serious difficulties, and slowly growing up uncared-for and neglected by the State. Unable to obtain the necessary means of self-propagation, it maintains a languid existence until an undesired catastrophe allows it the possibility of healthy extension. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church in America This volume belongs to a series intended to give a comprehensive history of National Churches. In sending forth that portion which treats of the American Church, it may be difficult to convince some of my readers of the propriety of calling the Protestant Episcopal Church the National Church of America. Strictly speaking, there has not been for many years any religious body in the United States which could, either from recognition by law and custom or from numerical predominance, claim to be the National Church. But when it is remembered that in the beginning, what is popularly known as the Episcopal Church was by charter and law established in the older colonies; that more than any other ecclesiastical organisation she had to do with constituting the nation, and, in the period of the Civil War, with its maintenance and reunion; and that, while conservative and Catholic in her character, she yet is distinctively American in spirit - there would seem to be ample justification for thus using the title American Church. A still further warrant for thisuse maybe found in the present position and prospects of this Church, as described in the concluding chapter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Church and the American Union The Author of this work, though a native of England, removed to America in the year 1828, while yet in early life. Having received Holy Orders at the hands of an American bishop in 1831, he gained his clerical experience in various parts of the United States and Canada. At the same time he had the pleasure of forming the acquaintance of many persons eminent in Church and State, and of a large proportion of the writers whose works are quoted in the following pages. Returning to this country in 1842, he obtained a Private Act of Parliament removing the legal disabilities attached to his American Ordination, and during the last nineteen years has enjoyed many opportunities of observing the operations of the Church at home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reproof of the American Church It is common to personify the Church, land to speak of her as of some spotless celestial being and vet she, in fact, consists of her clerical and lay members, each one of whom must personally an swer at the bar of Christ for his participation in every sin commit ted by the Church. Surely, it would be more becoming Christian men to inquire how far they are individually guilty of the offences charged upon them by Bishop Wilberforce, than to endeavor to stifle investigation, by burying in oblivion the faithful and Christian re buke of their English brother. Religious establishments tend to render the clergy obsequious to the civil ruler, and our voluntary system tempts them to do homage to the most capricious and irresponsible of all tyrants, the will of the multitude. Let us see what true and faithful allegiance our Primitive and Apostolic Church has borne to this American despot. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Church Review, 1876, Vol. 28 It is probable that in addition to the scriptural psalms, hymns were used from the earliest ages in the church. It is certain that their use in public worship, commenced in the East, long before it found its way to the less cultivated West. The introduction of hymns into the church at Milan, is thus described by S. Augustin in his confessions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freedom and the Churches: The Contributions of American Churches In the early part of the year 1913 a liberal religious congress was held in the city of Rochester, New York, one of whose features was a series of addresses by speakers of prominence in the American religious community on the contributions of American Churches to religious and civil liberty. It has been thought that the interest and value of these papers warranted their publication. While they have been revised by their authors it is inevitable that they should in some degree retain the informality of extemporized addresses. This is, however, atoned for by the freshness, directness and vigor of these utterances, in which the eminent services of American Churches to religious and civil liberty find eloquent and convincing expression. Professor Williston Walker, D.D., has kindly contributed a chapter to this volume in which the contribution of the Congregational Churches of the United States to the cause of religious freedom is more fully exhibited. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Source Book and Bibliographical Guide for American Church History Through the publication of several source collections, much has been done to assist fthe student of American political, social and economic history. But no corresponding assistance has been given to such as are interested in the more specifically religious history of our nation. It is true of course, that for the colonial period, political history to a considerable degree resolves itself into the religious and that, therefore, the source books already published contain much material that is serviceable to the church historian. For the national period, however, with its multiplication of church organization, its controversies and divisions, its nation-wide revivals, and its mission ary extension at home and abroad, no source material has been assembled for convenient access. Hence the publication of this volume, which within the briefest possible space embodies the most significant documents for the entire-field of American church history. The compiler wishes to state that the viewpoint from which he has approached the subject is that of regarding the church, not as the custodian of some divinely-revealed deposit of truth, nor as super naturally detached from an environment that is ever affecting her inner life and organization. In his selection of material he has been guided by the principle of choosing only such documents as most significantly set forth the contribution that the church has made to the progress of American society, and the manner in which from time to time she has adjusted herself to her new and changing environ ment. Denominationalism, therefore, has been relegated to the background. Ardent denominationalists. Will find their respective bodies recognized only in so far as these have played a strategic part in the development of American Christianity as a whole. The only exception is that in the case of some small but significant groups, material has been inserted to remove prevailing ignorance or miscon ception.
