Book Synopsis Missionary Methods by : Roland Allen

Book excerpt: "Missionary Methods," written by Roland Allen in 1912, was a book well ahead of its time. Even today his radical critique of Western missionary methods is cutting edge, though the biblical principles he advocates are now being embraced more and more by some ministries that are not tradition-bound. While this book and its sequel (Spontaneous Expansion) address mission work specifically, the principles described do not apply only to how the people of one country do missionary work in another. These books really are about what the Bible has to show us about how to carry out the mission of the church, whether in our own culture, in ministering cross-culturally in our own back yard, or planting churches across an ocean. If Allen is right in the conclusions he draws about finance, many church planting efforts may be operating by financial principles that do more to hinder rather than help establish a healthy, self-supporting church. Allen's observations on the biblical pattern for selecting and equipping elders for local church leadership challenged not only the status quo of the Anglican church of his day, but continue to challenge the practices of most churches today. The fact "Missionary Methods" was written a century ago but still applies to our times is evidence of the Truth it holds. Not an easy read, Allen's book nonetheless provokes much thought and reflection. Also an excellent commentary on Paul's letters, Allen's book is a must read for everyone that is even contemplating a career overseas-and even more so if that career involves missionary work.

Download or read book The Spontaneous Expansion of the Church - And the Causes Which Hinder It written by Roland Allen and published by . This book was released on 2006-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If it were once believed that the freedom of churches should be restricted to bring greater control to missions, Roland Allen sets out to overturn this conception. Warning against the danger of imposing greater limits on churches, the Author advocates that all members of the church, 'natives' and foreigners alike, must take an active role in its establishment and daily life. The study divides itself into nine chapters; the first, introducing Allen's standpoint, the second as an opening into the nature and character of Spontaneous Expression. The third chapter deals with modern attempts by 'natives' towards the liberty of their churches. The fear of the doctrine becoming weakened by natives taking it into their own hands is addressed by chapter four and this fear is widened into the realm of the Christian standard of morals in chapter five. Civilisation and enlightenment form the central themes of the sixth chapter. Chapters seven and eight tackle the distinction between the Church and missionary societies. It is in the final chapter that the future of Spontaneous Expansion is investigated and Allen puts forward his ideas which, as he rightly predicted, were broadly accepted fifty years and longer still after their original publication.

Download or read book Missionary Methods: St. Paul's or Ours? written by Roland Allen and published by Gideon House Books. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At this critical point in the history of World Missions, it is imperative for us to take a step back from “business as usual” in our work around the globe and reevaluate the strategies and methods we are implementing. What is working? What isn’t? If we’re honest, there may be more not working than we would care to admit. In this book, written in the early 1900s, Roland Allen invites us to look at the missionary work of the Apostle Paul with fresh eyes and an igniting perspective that is strikingly relevant to the greatest challenges we are facing today in modern missions. He offers a well of insight from the methodology of Paul that will focus and unite us as we draw nearer than ever before to our goal of fulfilling the Great Commission and reaching the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Book Synopsis Missionary Methods, St. Paul's Or Ours by : Roland Allen
Download or read book Missionary Methods, St. Paul's Or Ours written by Roland Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roland Allen entered China on an assignment from the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel to their North China Mission. He was later trapped within Beijing during the Boxer Rebellion, hiding with other Christian foreigners and fearing for his life. Traumatic events in his early life led him to take a new view on his calling, as well as the theological standpoint and the methods of evangelising employed by most European churches at the time. From the earliest, Allen supported the approach of seeding churches which could support themselves, grow on their own and perform their own governance activities. He advocated the incorporation of local customs into the church and a wider variety of types of Christianity as opposed to churches which only mimicked European counterparts. He envisaged better practice involving community leaders in the propagation of Christianity. He was even willing to entertain the idea of deploying lay ministers without formal training across unconverted areas. Arguing from his conviction that the Holy Spirit would guide new churches in their infancy, he accused his contemporaries of patronising condescension. In Missionary Methods he by turns excoriates missionary techniques and argues for the absolute necessity of proselytising to those who have not yet been able to know Christianity. As a well-travelled man of strong opinions, his position on ethical missionary work is intriguing to say the least. Book excerpt: "The secret of enabling the home Church to press her advantage in the non-Christian world is one of leadership. The people do not go beyond their leaders in knowledge and zeal, nor surpass them in consecration and sacrifice. The Christian pastor, minister, rector--whatever he may be denominated--holds the divinely appointed office for inspiring and guiding the thought and activities of the Church" -- Preface.

Download or read book How to Reach the West Again written by Timothy J Keller and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity is declining in the West. Churches in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe are closing their doors at an accelerating rate. How will the church respond? In this short but sweeping manifesto, New York Times bestselling author and pastor Timothy Keller argues that this decline should prompt us to rethink evangelism from the ground up. Using the early church as our guide, churches and individual Christians must examine ourselves, our culture, and Scripture to work toward a new missionary encounter with Western culture that will make the gospel both attractive and credible to a new generation.
