Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and State Handy-Book: Of Arguments, Facts, and Statistics Suited to the Times E design of the present work may be thus expressed To furnish the church-and-state politician, in a conveniently small compass, with a fund of information, Scriptural, argumentative, historical, and statistical, calculated to be useful to him in fulfilling his public duties in matters ecclesiastical or semi-ecclesiastical. The subjects dealt with range themselves substantially under three heads I. The observance of the Lord's Day. 2. Dissenting aggressions on the Establish ed Church. 3. Roman Catholicism as an element in British politics. Under the first head I have discussed the Sunday question, from a purely Biblical stand-point; and, subordinately, in the light thrown upon it by the authoritative standards of the Church of England, and practical experience. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the middle of the nineteenth century, a stable relationship between American religious organizations and the state was taken for granted. Concord prevailed between the Christian (and largely Protestant) "establishment" on one side and governmental bodies on the other. Here a preeminent scholar of American religious history shows what happened when that settled relationship was tested and challenged. The decades from 1880 to 1920 were marked by an unprecedented influx of immigrants (many of whom were Catholics and Jews), increasing conflicts between public and private school systems, excitement over imperialism, the growth of progressivism in politics, the rise of the social gospel, and the impact of World War I. Providing an overview of how these developments affected church-state relationships, Robert Handy's work is fascinating as a view of this period and as a clue to the tensions in American church-state relations today. Handy shows that the movement from a Protestant America to an explicit pluralism was well under way during these years, even though this change was not clearly recognized at the time it was occurring. Both governmental and religious institutions were transformed, and the difficult process of sorting out ways to relate them has been going on ever since. This book will be an invaluable aid in that task, for students of church-state relations and for a broader readership concerned with American culture in general. Originally published in 1991. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides the key source materialshistorical and legalfor understanding the relationship of church and state.. The controversies surrounding aid to parochial schools, blue laws, school prayer, and birth control programs have been central to the ongoing search for the proper boundary between religious and political authority in America. This concise volume features chronologically organized selections from such official documents as colonial charters, court opinions, and legislation, along with incisive twentieth-century interpretations of the issues they treat. Historical figures as diverse as John F. Kennedy, Perry Miller, Reinhold Niebhur, and Paul Blanshard, together with contemporary ones illuminate the interrelationships between the legal, political, and religious structures of American society. We encounter controversies every day that concern school vouchers, prayer in schools and stadiums, religious symbols in public spaces, and tax support for faith-based social initiatives as well as arguments among advocates of "pro-choice" and "pro-life" positions. These and other issues are at the center of an ongoing search for a means to delineate the interactions among religious and political authorities-- initially in the United States but increasingly in the rest of the world as well. This concise volume presents chronologically-organized chapters that include selections from documents like colonial charters, opinions of the Supreme Court and salient legislation, along with contemporary commentary, and incisive interpretations of the issues by modern scholars. Figures as divergent as John Winthrop, John F. Kennedy, and Sandra Day OConnor speak from these pages as directly as Paul Blanshard, Reinhold Niebuhr, John Courtney Murray, and Robert Bellah. Church and State in American History addresses the difficult relationships among the political and religious structures of our society and the emergence of an American solution to the church-state problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant and urgent appraisal of one of the most profound conflicts of our time Even before George W. Bush gained reelection by wooing religiously devout "values voters," it was clear that church-state matters in the United States had reached a crisis. With Divided by God, Noah Feldman shows that the crisis is as old as this country--and looks to our nation's past to show how it might be resolved. Today more than ever, ours is a religiously diverse society: Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist as well as Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish. And yet more than ever, committed Christians are making themselves felt in politics and culture. What are the implications of this paradox? To answer this question, Feldman makes clear that again and again in our nation's history diversity has forced us to redraw the lines in the church-state divide. In vivid, dramatic chapters, he describes how we as a people have resolved conflicts over the Bible, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the teaching of evolution through appeals to shared values of liberty, equality, and freedom of conscience. And he proposes a brilliant solution to our current crisis, one that honors our religious diversity while respecting the long-held conviction that religion and state should not mix. Divided by God speaks to the headlines, even as it tells the story of a long-running conflict that has made the American people who we are.

Book excerpt: Church and State in American History illuminates the complex relationships among the political and religious authority structures of American society, and illustrates why church-state issues have remained controversial since our nation's founding. It has been in classroom use for over 50 years. John Wilson and Donald Drakeman explore the notion of America as "One Nation Under God" by examining the ongoing debate over the relationship of church and state in the United States. Prayers and religious symbols in schools and other public spaces, school vouchers and tax support for faith-based social initiatives continue to be controversial, as are arguments among advocates of pro-choice and pro-life positions. The updated 4th edition includes selections from colonial charters, Supreme Court decisions, and federal legislation, along with contemporary commentary and incisive interpretations by modern scholars. Figures as divergent as John Winthrop, Anne Hutchinson, James Madison, John F. Kennedy, and Sandra Day O'Connor speak from these pages, as do Robert Bellah, Clarence Thomas, and Ruth Bader Ginsberg. The continuing public and scholarly interest in this field, as well as a significant evolution in the Supreme Court's church-state jurisprudence, renders this timely re-edition as essential reading for students of law, American History, Religion, and Politics.
