Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chronology of the Old Testament HE following dissertation has been written in such moments as could be spared from the performance of pressing parochial duties. It is hoped however that it will shew no sign either of undue haste or of lack of preparation. Indeed, since chronology has been the author's study or his recreation from his childhood, it may be said that many years have each contributed their toll to the production of the little volume. In one respect the chronology that is advocated here may be regarded as a reversion to schemes and systems of an earlier date. This is true in that it is essentially a Biblical Chronology, and has been deduced almost entirely from the Hebrew records. Synchronism with Assyrian and other history serves to test and to establish the truth of results that have been already attained, but it is too slight to provide a solid foundation for an alternative system, and the attempt to make it such has led to disaster. The hope is expressed that the present enquiry may tend to a clearer view of historical sequence and may to some extent replace the elaborate chronological systems of past centuries that have failed to satisfy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament History The present treatment of Old Testament history aims to conform to the object of the series as handbooks to Bible study. The Bible itself is, accordingly, the main primary source. In each Section the biblical text, as indicated in the margin, is the basis Of the discussion, and requires the first attention of the student. Where the biblical material is most abundant the history is consequently the fullest. But it has become increasingly evident that the material of the Bible is not chronologically arranged, but that accounts centuries apart in their origin and point of view are Often found side by Side or interwoven with each other. The recognition of this fact is the result of the historical and scientific method of the Bible study of our day. It will account for the order and method here adopted. If the reason for the procedure is not always fully stated, it is due to the design of the series not to deal SO much with the process as with the results achieved. Only where Silence would leave the biblical situation obscure was it deemed necessary to enter into the discussion of critical questions, and then only in the briefest way possible. The logical movement of Old Testament history which is the outcome of the critical use of the biblical material proves ultimately its strongest justification. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chronology of the Bible Very few words are needed to show the importance of Chronology. The moral teachings of History may gain our warmer admiration, but Chronology is the skeleton or framework which supports the several parts of History, and saves the whole from falling into a confused heap. The Hebrew Chronology, in particular, has many claims on our notice; first, for its help towards our understanding the Bible; and, secondly, for its contribution towards the Chronology of the neighbouring nations, particularly of Egypt and Assyria. The Chronology of the ancient world is indebted first to Babylon for its recorded eclipses, preserved for us by Claudius Ptolemy the Astronomer, and then to those countries that were ruled by a succession of monarchs, whose reigns measured time with a convenience unknown to their republican neighbours. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Biblical History: Old Testament Religious education is one of the many problems of our day, and nowhere is the difficulty more acute than in the case of the Old Testament. Under no circumstances is it an easy task to arrange the different component parts of a volume so varied in such a manner as to give a young student a clear idea of its meaning and purpose. Isolated stories may arouse interest, but their connexion with the rest is not very obvious. Here and there a psalm or prophecy may touch the heart; but it stands as a thing apart, without anything to account for its origin. Not unfrequently, moreover, in the course of instruction in a particular book we meet with narratives apparently unedifying, or sentiments which are certainly not in accord with the highest views today. There is the further difficulty of answering questions like Is such an account true? Is this or that statement in accordance with what we are taught in a lesson on science or geography? Do people really believe this? For youth is a season of credulous scepticism. A child will accept much on authority, and at the same time is ready with questions going to the Very root of a matter. He also possesses an instinctive power of detecting that the teacher is himself doubtful as to the facts on which he is insisting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dated Events of the Old Testament: Being a Presentation of Old Testament Chronology The tables in this little volume present to the eye a reasonably complete list of the events narrated in the Old Testament, with their time relations: first of all the relations of each event to other near events, Israelitish or foreign, and also its date in terms of the Christian era. The tables distinguish between the dates which are fixed by positive evidence and those which are matters of conjectural opinion. They also present to the eye a conspectus of the evidence by which each event is dated, and the reasons for the variant Opinions that men hold concerning the chronology. And not least important, they make graphic by means of their blank spaces the fact that in the Old Testament we have, never an attempt at a com plete history, but everywhere narratives of selected incidents. Thus the fell counsels of the Tempter were accomplished. Through want of faith in God's word, through a longing for independence, through a vain desire to become gods unto themselves, our first parents were beguiled into sin, and when their eyes were opened, instead of greater happiness they now experienced the strange and hither to unknown consciousness of shame, and degradation, and unmeetness for God's presence (gen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Stories: Old Testament Kings and Prophets, The Exile and Return.* Each period is represented by its most important stories; the purpose of the introduction and notes to each section is to weave all together by indicating briefly the bearing of each story on the general history. Thus it is hoped that the whole volume may leave on a young mind an impression of Old Testament history, in outline complete (however scanty), but with outline supplemented by the most vivid picturing of important points. With the selection of stories no one will be satisfied, least of all the editor. But those who may be inclined to be censorious on this subject should try the experiment of making a selection themselves, and they will see how an editor has to sacrifice his own favour ites to stern limitations of space and suitability. Nevertheless, though I have drawn freely upon the learning of previous writers, I have throughout endeavoured to verify their assertions and to check their inferences, so that the opinions ex pressed have not been formed without independent inquiry and a sense of responsible judgment. Of the many defects of my work, due to limitations partly of space and partly of capacity, I am fully con scious, but its deficiencies will perhaps appear less serious if account be taken of the class of readers whose wants it is meant to supply. It is not intended for scholars, who will find in it little that is unfamiliar except the mistakes, but for less advanced students, who require in a text-book not so much extensive erudition as simplicity of method and perspicuity of statement. If it satisfies in any degree the needs of such, it will have achieved its purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament History of Redemption: Lectures The following manual of Old Testament History is one of Professor Delitzsch's four courses of University lectures on Biblical Theology. As such it has never been published in Germany. It is essentially an accurate reproduction of the paragraphs delivered to the theological students in Leipzig during the summer of 1880. Although I was primarily moved to undertake this translation for the use of my students, yet I have found these lectures so stimulating and helpful in my own study of the Old Testament, that I venture to offer my rendering of them to the public, especially after the generous reception accorded to the Messianic Prophecies by the friends of Dr. Delitzsch in Great Britain one year ago.
