Book excerpt: Taking place in the Brebon Isles off the northern coast of Aerbon during the First Era, "The Chronicles of Bree I" tells the tale of Rome's invasion of Bree. With the Roman economy suffering in light of the Roman-Itanian War of 1E25-30 and the Second Sumatran War (1E21-32), the Roman-based Merchant's Guild sent an expedition across the Aerbonean Ocean in their efforts to circumvent the neighbouring Kingdom of Svaneiol. This was predominantly due to the fact that they found their northern convoys plagued by the bandits and thieves that were prevalent in the poorer kingdom where it was situated in the mountainous woodlands between Rome and Legion. Following their ensuing discovery of the Brebon Isles, the reigning emperor launched a military campaign to bring the islands under the rule of the Roman Empire. The Breelanders were a primitive and tribal people, though their main advantage laid in the wars that had ravaged Rome's mighty empire. As a result, both sides found themselves pitted against one another in a long and bloody war where the Breelanders tenaciously fought to maintain their independence whilst Rome's forces fought to strengthen their influence in the lands of Aerbon and restore their economy in light of their campaigns against Itania and Sumatra.

Book excerpt: An Instant New York Times Bestseller! Winner of the Coretta Scott King - John Steptoe for New Talent Author Award Filled with mystery and an intriguingly rich magic system, Tracy Deonn’s YA contemporary fantasy reinvents the King Arthur legend and “braids together Southern folk traditions and Black Girl Magic into a searing modern tale of grief, power, and self-discovery” (Dhonielle Clayton, New York Times bestselling author of The Belles). After her mother dies in an accident, sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews wants nothing to do with her family memories or childhood home. A residential program for bright high schoolers at UNC–Chapel Hill seems like the perfect escape—until Bree witnesses a magical attack her very first night on campus. A flying demon feeding on human energies. A secret society of so called “Legendborn” students that hunt the creatures down. And a mysterious teenage mage who calls himself a “Merlin” and who attempts—and fails—to wipe Bree’s memory of everything she saw. The mage’s failure unlocks Bree’s own unique magic and a buried memory with a hidden connection: the night her mother died, another Merlin was at the hospital. Now that Bree knows there’s more to her mother’s death than what’s on the police report, she’ll do whatever it takes to find out the truth, even if that means infiltrating the Legendborn as one of their initiates. She recruits Nick, a self-exiled Legendborn with his own grudge against the group, and their reluctant partnership pulls them deeper into the society’s secrets—and closer to each other. But when the Legendborn reveal themselves as the descendants of King Arthur’s knights and explain that a magical war is coming, Bree has to decide how far she’ll go for the truth and whether she should use her magic to take the society down—or join the fight.

Book excerpt: There came the darkness. Before the darkness, there was life. Time seemed endless and possible, but the darkness shattered that. The darkness ate the purity, the youth, and the soul. Like a flash of watercolor sunset fading into a forbidden and hellish night went my innocence. This - these words - are all that remain... Bree was a nun - an innocent - tragically forced from her life of solitude into the world of eternal night. Now a vampire, Bree travels through the centuries, observing humanity's toxic beauty. From plague stricken England to modern day Chicago, she watches the world evolve, changing while she remains unchangeable. Her vampiric gifts, and those she's loved along the way, do not alter one fact: eternity is painfully lonely. And when Bree's certain madness has finally consumed her, it takes the power of an amulet to end her descent into madness.

She also knows she can’t go it alone, bonding quickly with her groupmates: an errant (and broke) nobleman, son of one of England’s oldest families; the ambitious and whip-smart daughter of a self-made immigrant; and the ditzy, husband-hunting daughter of a disgraced playboy aristocrat. What none of them realize is that there is more to Norwood than meets the eye: the school itself may unlock the secrets of Bree’s own shadowy past, and the classmates’ very lives will depend on their ability to work together to meet the dangers ahead.

Six more books followed, and together they became known as The Chronicles of Narnia. For the past fifty years, The Chronicles of Narnia have transcended the fantasy genre to become part of the canon of classic literature. Each of the seven books is a masterpiece, drawing the reader into a land where magic meets reality, and the result is a fictional world whose scope has fascinated generations. This edition presents all seven books—unabridged—in one impressive volume. The books are presented here in chronlogical order, each chapter graced with an illustration by the original artist, Pauline Baynes. Deceptively simple and direct, The Chronicles of Narnia continue to captivate fans with adventures, characters, and truths that speak to readers of all ages, even fifty years after they were first published.

Give both books to readers who fell in love with Tidesong or Witch Boy! Garlic loves spending time with Witch Agnes, Carrot, and her new friend, the Count, who has proven to be a delightful neighbor to the village of vegetable people rather than a scary vampire. But despite Agnes’s best attempts to home-brew a vegetarian blood substitute for Count, the ingredient she needs most can only be found at the Magic Market, far from the valley. Before she knows it, with a broomstick in hand, Garlic is nervously preparing for a journey. But Garlic is experiencing another change too—finger by finger, she appears to be turning human. Witch Agnes assures her that this is normal for her garden magic, but Garlic isn’t so sure that she’s ready for such a big change. After all, changes are scary…and what if she doesn’t want to be human after all?

The shadows have risen, and the line is law. All Bree wanted was to uncover the truth behind her mother’s death. So she infiltrated the Legendborn Order, a secret society descended from King Arthur’s knights—only to discover her own ancestral power. Now, Bree has become someone new: A Medium. A Bloodcrafter. A Scion. But the ancient war between demons and the Order is rising to a deadly peak. And Nick, the Legendborn boy Bree fell in love with, has been kidnapped. Bree wants to fight, but the Regents who rule the Order won’t let her. To them, she is an unknown girl with unheard-of power, and as the living anchor for the spell that preserves the Legendborn cycle, she must be protected. When the Regents reveal they will do whatever it takes to hide the war, Bree and her friends must go on the run to rescue Nick themselves. But enemies are everywhere, Bree’s powers are unpredictable and dangerous, and she can’t escape her growing attraction to Selwyn, the mage sworn to protect Nick until death. If Bree has any hope of saving herself and the people she loves, she must learn to control her powers from the ancestors who wielded them first—without losing herself in the process.
