Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry van Dyke was born on 10th November, 1852 at Germantown in Pennsylvania. His education was of the highest quality; he graduated from Princeton University in 1873 and Princeton Theological Seminary, 1877 and later served as a professor of English literature at Princeton between 1899 and 1923. He chaired the committee that wrote the first Presbyterian printed liturgy, The Book of Common Worship of 1906. From 1908-09 he was an American lecturer at the University of Paris and then by appointment of President Wilson, a friend and former classmate of van Dyke, he became Minister to the Netherlands and Luxembourg in 1913. Despite his inexperience in the role he showed great diplomacy and provided genuine comfort to American refugees who at the outbreak of WWI gathered in the Netherlands. However, he is best known as a poet, providing the lyrics too many popular hymns including "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee" and for his short stories. This collection of his Christmas stories clearly displays his tremendous talent and enormous energy. Religion and nature meant much to him and its motifs recur constantly here as well as his poetry, hymns and essays. Henry Van Dyke died on April 10th, 1933 and is perhaps best remembered in the following quote from his work: "Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love - time is eternity."

Book excerpt: This is a Christmas story. The mansion of the title is Weightman Mansion. It is not in the most fashionable area of town but it is evident that whoever owns it has money. It is a short story with a strong moral and uses the two main characters, Harold Weightman the son of Mr. Weightman, and the patriarch himself. They are used to point up the difference between what would now be called 'virtue signaling' and doing good with genuine and sincere intent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " It was the hour of rest in the Country Beyond the Stars. All the silver bells that swing with the turning of the great ring of light which lies around that land were softly chiming; and the sound of their commotion went down like dew upon the golden ways of the city, and the long alleys of blossoming trees, and the meadows of asphodel, and the curving shores of the River of Life. At the hearing of that chime, all the angels who had been working turned to play, and all who had been playing gave themselves joyfully to work. Those who had been singing, and making melody on different instruments, fell silent and began to listen. Those who had been walking alone in meditation met together in companies to talk. And those who had been far away on errands to the Earth and other planets came homeward like a flight of swallows to the high cliff when the day is over. It was not that they needed to be restored from weariness, for the inhabitants of that country never say, "I am tired." But there, as here, the law of change is the secret of happiness, and the joy that never ends is woven of mingled strands of labour and repose, society and solitude, music and silence. Sleep comes to them not as it does to us, with a darkening of the vision and a folding of the wings of the spirit, but with an opening of the eyes to deeper and fuller light, and with an effortless outgoing of the soul upon broader currents of life, as the sun-loving bird poises and circles upward, without a wing-beat, on the upholding air..."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking and dreaming over the reality of the first Christmas and how Jesus of Nazareth came to be born in Bethlehem, I was given this story. It does not claim to be a historical record. It is a picture drawn by imagination looking for the truth. But there is nothing here that is out of harmony with the Gospels, nothing that does not belong to the holy land and time when these things came to pass. I know the long trail between Galilee and Judea by foot and heart. Thus the story seems to me to be true. It is also a new story because it answers three natural questions that have never before been answered. It tries to tell the human side of a divine event. So I offer it to you, reader, in all sincerity; and to Him who is the Son of God and the Son of Man, in all adoration. Henry van Dyke (1852-1933) was an American clergyman, educator, and author. He graduated from Princeton in 1873, and from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1874. He was pastor of the Brick Presbyterian Church, New York City (1883-99), professor of English literature at Princeton (1899-1923), and U.S. minister to the Netherlands (1913-16). Among his popular inspirational writings is the Christmas story The Other Wise Man (1896). As President Wilson's ambassador to the Netherlands from 1913, Van Dyke was a first-hand witness to the outbreak of World War I and its progress, and was a key player in the President's diplomatic efforts to keep the U.S. out of the conflict.
