Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Religion, Its Meanings and Proof This book forms the sequel to my former work, entitled The Fatherhood of God in Christian Truth and Life. It is an attempt to explain and verify the Christian religion by means of the fatherly-filial relationship, the supremacy and meaning of which for Christian consciousness and theology, was investigated in the former work. The book has been prepared under very great difficulties, owing to the ceaseless pressure of public engagements. It is to be feared that it has suffered thereby. Moreover, its scope is so extensive that it has been impossible to fill in many details, while some important subjects connected with the exposition and proof of Christianity have been but lightly touched upon or in some cases omitted altogether. The purpose of the book is rather to establish a general point of view than to treat the subject with the exhaustiveness of a Compendium of Christian Evidences. The popular discussion of what is commonly called the New Theology did not take place till this book was practically completed. It has, therefore, been impossible, even if it had been otherwise desirable, to enter into the current controversy on the subject. It will be found, however, that many of the subjects of the controversy are dealt with, and that a serious attempt is made to give full effect to the truth of the immanence, while steadfastly maintaining the transcendence, of God. I am, of course, greatly indebted to many sources in working out the view of Christianity and of its relation to Reality, which is outlined in these pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth of the Christian Religion The case is similar with regard to the injunctions of morality, to which such great importance is assigned in the Christian religion. As they are represented in the conscience, they claim to be directly valid without any further justification or demonstration. If we ask whether they' are true, that does not mean whether they are subjectively valid in the manner stated, but it means whether they are' really to be referred to God, and because of such origin have the significance of objective laws of the world. The question therefore goes back, as before, to the other query whether the Christian faith which ascribes such significance to them is true. We are concerned with the truth of the Faith when we inquire regarding the truth of the Christian Religion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of Christ: An Interpretation The position taken in the book is, of course, frankly ethical, and as such in a large sense non sacramentarian. The character ideal in Christianity is regarded as the essential thing first, last, and-all of the time. Room is left for the mystical and spiritual element, but it is frankly recognized that the ethical ideal of Jesus, as embodied in practical living, is the one ultimate test of Christianity. The necessity for formal religion is fully conceded, as is the value of formal correctness in our interpreta tion of the teaching of Christ, but this formal ele ment is never exalted to a place where it supersedes the vital. Christian character is bigger than the Christian Church, big as the latter is. The church exists only to produce character, and, failing in this, is valueless either to the individual or to society. Herein lies a great warning for the church. When ever she ceases to inspire high and noble ideals in her members, she is already on the high road to decay. As the author of the Apocalypse puts it, she must repent and do her first works or else her candlestick will be taken out of its place. Observe that we pos tulate mere curiosity and interest in human nature, as a phenomenon, we postulate no sym pathy or interest in religious belief as such. For the Martian as described is a being for whom religion is an impossibility and the Christian ideal a subject for laughter. He would natur ally pass by our churches, ignore our religious books and newspapers, and regard the denuncia tion of the advancing tide of infidelity by Bishops and Archdeacons, as a proof that the terrestrials are only still at the lowest rung of the ladder, scaled already by the inhabitants of Mars. Yet none the less such a being could not be long upon earth, before he would be driven to the conclusion that if he desired to understand the civilization of Europe and America, to enter into the meaning of its poli tics, its literature, its art, and even to appreciate its political geography, there was one subject of which he must strive to make himself a master - the history of Christianity, of the manifold forms which it has assumed, of the strange spell cast by it upon the most practical of the races upon earth, and the still stranger reactions which it has exercised upon politics and culture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity Its Nature and Its Truth It has long been the writer's conviction that more ought to be done to expound the truths of Christianity and the grounds on which they may still be accepted. The task is especially urgent for the sake of the young people in our churches, who are slipping away from the faith because they have been trained neither to understand nor to defend it. The present volume is intended as a modest contribution to this object. It should be judged in the light of its aim. It is addressed to those who are willing to read a discussion of the deepest things, provided that it is simple and popular in its treatment, and avoids the abstruse and technical. Much has accordingly been omitted which must have found a place in a formal treatise on Systematic Theology and Apologetics, while even in the subjects discussed some aspects have been ignored as inappropriate to those for whom the volume is primarily designed. It was also necessary, for the same reasons, to restrict the size of the book, and several chapters have been left out that readers might not be repelled by its length. A Study of Rival Interpretations The aim of this work is to assist the intelligent Chris tian layman and the minister of the gospel who have felt the need of revising their doctrinal inheritance to reach' a more satisfactory interpretation of the Christian faith. Everyone who has taken the pains to acquaint himself in any tolerable degree with the effects which the adop tion of the methods of modern science in many fields of theological investigation has produced in the minds of great numbers of students for the ministry must be aware of the imperativeness of thinking through afresh the essential problems of theology. In no department of Christian thought is this imperativeness more evident than in the subject of apologetics. The older works on this subject, notwithstanding the splendid philosophic ability exhibited in many of them, demonstrably fail to meet the most insistent questions of our times. The discussions presented in this volume are, in the mind of the author, preparatory to a statement and vindication of the truth of the Christian religion. They do not con stitute a formal introduction to such a task, as anyone can easily see. But it is hoped that a survey of the best known types of the Christian faith will assist the inquir ing reader to reach at least a point of view from which his work of formulating a theology for himself may begin.
