Book excerpt: Early Praise: "No other testimony has ever affected me to tears like yours" "Possibly the most moving testimony I've ever heard" "I was praising Jesus with tears running down my face" I rode around with a motorcycle club and wore the same dirty clothes month after month in the 1960's. I was involved in all kinds of crime from pimping to dealing drugs. I carried a crowbar and a meat cleaver, but later found a gun to be more practical. My hair was very long and I wore an earring and ring in my nose. I used all kinds of drugs including LSD, speed, psilocybin, marijuana, hashish and alcohol. I was arrested and informed by the police that I was facing 20 to life on each of two charges. I was not at the trial when the jury found me guilty and the judge sentenced me. They issued a federal warrant for flight to avoid prosecution and I spent the next 10 years as a fugitive with law enforcement in hot pursuit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when speaking the truth becomes illegal? That is the question Pastor Pete Holloway faces when California implements the Hate Speech Reparation and Elimination Act. When the San Francisco pastor is threatened with fines, reeducation, and incarceration for violating the state's new hate speech law, he chooses to flee. But from what? Truth? Responsibility? God? Or his own sin? As he struggles to remain one step ahead of the law, Pete is forced to confront his options. Should he join the resistance and fight back, remain on the run until the Draconian law can be overturned, or should he return to take his stand and face the consequences? As he wrestles with his conscience, he discovers things hidden deep in his heart which must be addressed before he can find resolution and peace. Is he courageous enough to confront them, or has his journey been in vain? Endorsements As the voice of Conservative Christian politics in Kansas, I am constantly in the bull’s-eye of today’s Godless cancel culture. Author David Mathews, through his artistic gift Fugitive of Faith, teaches me that I rest comfortably in God’s hands. I know this brilliant book will be an incredible gift to you as well. Simply put, Fugitive of Faith is a glorious journey through the perils of our progressive society and an honor to read. State Senator Mark B. Steffen, M.D. Since all but a handful of states have hate crimes laws on the books, this fictional look at how a Bible-believing pastor might deal with being accused of violating the law and face both criminal charges and devastating real world effects is especially relevant. As recent events in Canada clearly illustrate, a day of reckoning for members of the clergy may not be as far away as some Christians believe it to be. Fugitive of Faith will serve as a catalyst for soul searching and spark spirited discussion for Christians in all walks of life! Courtney Montgomery Political blogger at The Cerebral Conservative

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How should the Catholic church remember the sins of its saints? This question proves particularly urgent in the case of those saints who were canonized due to their relation to black slavery. Today, many of their racial virtues seem like racial vices. In this way, the church celebrates Peter Claver, a seventeenth-century Spanish missionary to Colombia, as “the saint of the slave trade,” and extols Martín de Porres as the patron saint of mixed race people. But in truth, their sainthoods have upheld anti-blackness much more than they have undermined it. Habituated by anti-blackness, the church has struggled to perceive racial holiness accurately. In the ongoing cause to canonize Pierre Toussaint, a Haitian-born former slave, the church continues to enact these bad racial habits. This book proposes black fugitivity, as both a historical practice and an interpretive principle, to be a strategy by which the church can build new hagiographical habits. Rather than searching inside itself for racial heroes, the church should learn to celebrate those black fugitives who sought refuge outside of it.

Book excerpt: Robert Leon Davis was a respected police officer in New Orleans serving for four years until 1979-when he was arrested. He had begun his career with aspirations of being a great cop. But he was exposed to a darker side of law enforcement. While partnered with a veteran Robert first witnessed an officer violate the very laws he vowed to uphold - and shared his crime. One compromise led to another, and Davis faced arrest. From studying criminal law at Loyola University and becoming an award winning officer, Davis was a fugitive, living off the land in remote forests in America and Canada to elude capture. The church upbringing, where his grandmother made sure he learned about God and Jesus, was abandoned in anger. Through a stranger's prayer the angry atheist realised he was weary of running. He yielded his life to God, and gave himself in. When the District Attorney finally dusted off his file, what would his sentence be?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antebellum slave narratives have taken pride of place in the American literary canon. One key aspect of the genre, however, has been left unexamined: its materiality. In Fugitive Texts, Michaël Roy offers the first book-length study of the slave narrative as a material artifact. Drawing on a wide range of sources, he reconstructs the publication histories of a number of famous and lesser-known narratives, placing them against the changing backdrop of antebellum print culture. Published to rave reviews in French, Fugitive Texts illuminates the heterogeneous nature of a genre often described in monolithic terms and ultimately paves the way for a redefinition of the literary form we have come to recognize as "the slave narrative."

Book excerpt: PREFACE. It is almost allowable, I think, to say that this is a true story, for fiction has only been introduced for the purpose of piecing together and making a symmetrical whole of a number of most interesting facts in regard to Madagascar and the terrible persecutions that took place there in the early part and middle of the present century. I have ventured to modify time and place somewhat, as well as to mix my characters and their deeds a little, in order to suit the conditions of my tale; but in doing so I have striven to avoid exaggeration and to produce a true picture of the state of affairs, at the period treated of, in what may be styled one of the most interesting and progressive islands of the world.
