Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Element in Plato and the Platonic Philosophy The translator deems it right to supply what many Christian readers will probably regard as a deficiency in the representation given in the treatise of Ackermann, concerning the Christian element in the writings of Plato. It has respect to that part of the representation which bears on the doctrine of the atonement, and which the author exhibits as 'the summit of the Platonic, as of the Christian wisdom and knowledge' (p. 249). But in this he seems to identify atonement with redemption, and to make no account of the substitutionary character of the sufferings of Christ, or of the atonement, ordinarily and strictly so called. The following passage from the Lectures of the late Archer Butler presents, in this respect, the proper complement to the representation of Ackermann: 'There runs through all the views of Plato a want of any distinct apprehension of the claims of Divine justice in consequence of human sin. Even in his strongest references to punishment, it is still represented mainly, if not entirely, under the notion of a purificatory transition, a severe but beneficial káƟapois. This arises partly from his conception of the Divine character, partly from his theory of the human soul itself. From the former, inasmuch as he considers the attribute of indignant wrath, or its results, inapplicable to Deity: - from the latter, because in considering the soul essentially in its higher elements divine, he could only look upon the misfortunes of its bodily connection as incidental pollutions which might delay, but could not ultimately defeat, its inalienable rights. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does Plato have to do with the Christian faith? Quite a bit, it turns out. In ways that might surprise us, Christians throughout the history of the church and even today have inherited aspects of the ancient Greek philosophy of Plato, who was both Socrates's student and Aristotle's teacher. To help us understand the influence of Platonic thought on the Christian faith, Louis Markos offers careful readings of some of Plato's best-known texts and then traces the ways that his work shaped the faith of some of Christianity's most beloved theologians, including Gregory of Nyssa, Augustine, Dante, and C. S. Lewis. With Markos's guidance, readers can ascend to a true understanding of Plato's influence on the faith.

Book Synopsis Platonism and Christian Thought in Late Antiquity by : Panagiotis G. Pavlos
Download or read book Platonism and Christian Thought in Late Antiquity written by Panagiotis G. Pavlos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Platonism and Christian Thought in Late Antiquity examines the various ways in which Christian intellectuals engaged with Platonism both as a pagan competitor and as a source of philosophical material useful to the Christian faith. The chapters are united in their goal to explore transformations that took place in the reception and interaction process between Platonism and Christianity in this period. The contributions in this volume explore the reception of Platonic material in Christian thought, showing that the transmission of cultural content is always mediated, and ought to be studied as a transformative process by way of selection and interpretation. Some chapters also deal with various aspects of the wider discussion on how Platonic, and Hellenic, philosophy and early Christian thought related to each other, examining the differences and common ground between these traditions. Platonism and Christian Thought in Late Antiquity offers an insightful and broad ranging study on the subject, which will be of interest to students of both philosophy and theology in the Late Antique period, as well as anyone working on the reception and history of Platonic thought, and the development of Christian thought.
Book Synopsis Origen Against Plato by : Mark Julian Edwards
Download or read book Origen Against Plato written by Mark Julian Edwards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002.Origen (AD 185 - 254) is regarded as one of the figures chiefly responsible for the contamination of biblical theology with pagan philosophy in the early church. Edwards argues that Origen set out to construct a Christian philosophy, yet he did so with the intention of preserving theology from the infiltration of pagan thought. Examining the question of philosophical influence on Christian thought, Edwards argues that scholars have often leapt to unjustified conclusions based simply on common vocabulary or parallel development. This book advances new interpretations of the early Christian systems which are generally called 'Gnostic', and the Doctrine of the Trinity in Origen's 'Platonist' teacher Clement of Alexandria. Edwards concludes that Origen's hermeneutics, eschatology, cosmology and Trinitarian theology are all related to his understanding of human nature, which is radically opposed to that of Platonism.
Book Synopsis The Christian Platonism of Simone Weil by : E. Jane Doering
Download or read book The Christian Platonism of Simone Weil written by E. Jane Doering and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, a group of renowned international scholars seek to discern the ways in which Simone Weil was indebted to Plato, and how her provocative readings of his work offer challenges to contemporary philosophy, theology, and spirituality. This is the first book in twenty years to systematically investigate Weil's Christian Platonism. The opening essays explore what actually constitutes Weil's Platonism. Louis Dupre addresses the Platonic and Gnostic elements of her thought with respect to her negative theology, and the Christian Platonism of her positive theology as found in her reflections on beauty and the Good. degree to which her teacher Alain influenced her Platonism. Michael Ross contends that Weil's interest in Plato is in ethical Platonism. Essays by Robert Chenavier and by Patrick Patterson and Lawrence Schmidt consider the importance of matter and materialism in Weil's Platonism and argue that it is key to understanding her political thought. A middle group of essays addresses more classically metaphysical themes in Weil's thought. Vance G. Morgan examines her use of Greek mathematics. Florence de Lussy analyzes Weil's distinctive, mystical Platonic reflections on Being in the last notebooks from Marseilles. Emmauel Gabellieri discusses Weil's metaxology, that is, the mediation and relatedness of Being, shown in her speculative thought. set of essays considers Weil's relevance for contemporary spirituality and moral theology. Cyril O'Regan examines her thinking on violence and evil. Eric Springsted looks at the conceptual links that exist between Weil and Augustine. Finally, David Tracy contends that Weil is the foremost predecessor of recent attempts to reunite the mystical and prophetic. Drawing together some of the top Weil scholars in the world, this collection offers important new insights into her thought, and will be appreciated by philosophers and theologians.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Investigation of the Trinity of Plato and of Philo Judaeus: And of the Effects Which an Attachment to Their Writings Had Upon the Principles and Reasonings of the Fathers of the Christian Church On this account I have ever set-a high value upon the knowledge of pagan antiquity, particularly upon an acquaintance with the writings of the phi iosophers of ancient Greece. In them we see the iii human understanding in its natural and unassisted state, putting forth its most vigorous and best directed exertions in the pursuit of truth; and we may thence learn to set a just value upon that communication of wisdom, so pure, so simple, and so unadorned, which is tendered to us in the Gospel of Christ. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of Plato In the Preface to my Platonism I said that my purpose in publishing that work was to lay the foundation for a series of studies on the origins and early environment of Christianity and on various modern revivals of philosophic religion. Four years have passed since those lectures were delivered and printed, and the project which then stood rather vaguely before me has taken more definite shape. My plan now is that the series - or better, perhaps, the core of the series - should consist of four volumes. Of these the first is presented herewith; the second will deal with the Hellenistic philosophies, principally Epicureanism, Stoicism, and Neoplatonism; the third will be on Christianity, and the fourth will contain a number of essays on fundamental questions raised in the course of the foregoing studies. As I have already observed, and may have to observe again, my intention is not at all to compose a history of Greek philosophy or of Christian dogma; the work in these fields has been done thoroughly and repeatedly. Nor am I concerned with ultimate origins. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Returning to Reality by : Paul Tyson
Download or read book Returning to Reality written by Paul Tyson and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Could it be that we have lost touch with some basic human realities in our day of high-tech efficiency, frenetic competition, and ceaseless consumption? Have we turned from the moral, the spiritual, and even the physical realities that make our lives meaningful? These are metaphysical questions -questions about the nature of reality- but they are not abstract questions. These are very down to earth questions that concern power and the collective frameworks of belief and action governing our daily lives. This book is an introduction to the history, theory, and application of Christian metaphysics. Yet this book is not just an introduction, it is also a passionately argued call for a profound change in the contemporary Christian mind. Paul Tyson argues that as Western culture's Christian Platonist understanding of reality was replaced by modern pragmatic realism, we turned not just from one outlook on reality to another, but away from reality itself. This book seeks to show that if we can recover this ancient Christian outlook on reality, reframed for our day, then we will be able to recover a way of life that is in harmony with human and divine truth.
