Book Synopsis The Battle for the Trinity by : Donald G. Bloesch
Download or read book The Battle for the Trinity written by Donald G. Bloesch and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2001-07-11 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Battle for the Trinity, Dr. Bloesch tackles the controversial issues surrounding the questions of God-language and their potential as one of the most divisive issues facing the church in the twentieth century. Should God be addressed as Father, Mother or Parent, should Jesus be referred to primarily as the Son of God or the Child of God, did God really reveal himself definitively in the person of his Son Jesus Christ? Bloesch contends that how we speak about God embodies the very core of Christianity and how we ultimately understand the biblical and historical meaning of the Trinity itself. The debates surrounding the Doctrine of God are many, and Bloesch urges the church to respond to the concerns of women that the sacred carries both masculine and feminine dimensions. Bloesch emphasizes that the God of the Bible is not described in masculine terms exclusively, and we err in our failure to recognize it. If Christianity is to remain genuinely ChristianÓ, these controversial issues must be dealt with in such a manner that will preserve the full historical and biblical understanding of the Trinity.

Book Synopsis Jefferson Davis's Flight from Richmond by : John Stewart
Download or read book Jefferson Davis's Flight from Richmond written by John Stewart and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-12-24 with total page 779 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the space of a few hours on the night of April 2, 1865, Richmond, the Confederate capital, was evacuated and burned, the government fled, slavery was finished in North America, Union forces entered the city and the outcome of the Civil War was effectively sealed. No official documents tell the story because the Confederate government was on the run. First there were newspaper accounts--mostly confused--then history books based on those accounts. But much of what we know about the fall of Richmond comes from "eyewitnesses" like Confederate Navy Secretary Stephen Mallory, whose tale became history. A great deal of what has been presented over the years by historians has been plagiarized, invented or misconstrued, and nearly all we have learned of Jefferson Davis's flight from Richmond to Danville is wrong. This book closely examines all relevant source material--much of it newly discovered by the author--as well as the writers, diarists and eyewitnesses themselves, and constructs a minutely detailed new account that comes closer to what Abraham Lincoln had in mind when he said, "History is not history unless it is the truth."
Book Synopsis Lynching and Vigilantism in the United States by : Norton Moses
Download or read book Lynching and Vigilantism in the United States written by Norton Moses and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1997-02-25 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with the 1760s, when lynching and vigilantism came into existence in what is now the United States, this bibliography fills a void in the history of American collective violence. It covers over 4,200 works dealing with vigilante movements and lynchings, including books, articles, government documents, and unpublished theses and dissertations. Following a chapter listing general works, the book is arranged into four chronological chapters, a chapter on the frontier West, a chapter on anti-lynching, and chapters on literature and art. The book opens with a chapter devoted to general works. It then includes chapters on the period from the Colonial era to the Civil War, the Civil War through 1881, and the periods from 1882 to 1916 and 1917 to 1996. The work then turns to the frontier West and to anti-lynching bills, laws, organizations, and leaders. Finally, the book includes chapters on vigilantism in literature and art.
Book Synopsis An Unpredictable Gospel by : Jay Riley Case
Download or read book An Unpredictable Gospel written by Jay Riley Case and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-02 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The astonishing growth of Christianity in the global South over the course of the twentieth century has sparked an equally rapid growth in studies of ''World Christianity,'' which have dismantled the notion that Christianity is a Western religion. What, then, are we to make of the waves of Western missionaries who have, for centuries, been evangelizing in the global South? Were they merely, as many have argued, agents of imperialism out to impose Western values? In An Unpredictable Gospel, Jay Case examines the efforts of American evangelical missionaries in light of this new scholarship. He argues that if they were agents of imperialism, they were poor ones. Western missionaries had a dismal record of converting non-Westerners to Christianity. The ministries that were most successful were those that empowered the local population and adapted to local cultures. In fact, influence often flowed the other way, with missionaries serving as conduits for ideas that shaped American evangelicalism. Case traces these currents and sheds new light on the relationship between Western and non-Western Christianities.

Download or read book Donald G. Bloesch written by Paul Maher and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald G. Bloesch is among the most important American theologians of the 20th and early 21st centuries. He calls himself a "catholic evangelical" and indeed, his appeal is as wide as those terms imply. His work has appeared in Catholic religious periodicals as well as many varieties of Protestant publications, both mainstream and lesser known. As a prolific author, Bloesch's writing is scattered across a large number of journals, many of which are difficult to access, and reviews of his work appear in an even larger range of forums. Donald G. Bloesch: A Research Bibliography collocates as many relevant resources on Bloesch's writing as possible. The book provides a chronological listing and description of each work written by Bloesch, as well as reviews of Bloesch's writing. Each entry gives the title, publication details, and notes about the relationship of the item described to other publications. Several indexes are also included, giving a checklist of books by Bloesch, a checklist of books to which Bloesch has contributed, and a list of book reviews that Bloesch has written about other authors. Finally, there is an alphabetical index of titles, names, and periodicals cited in the bibliography, making this the most comprehensive resource available on Bloesch.
