Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ground-breaking study, Shelley Baranowski not only explores how and why church-going Protestants in eastern Prussia turned to Nazism in large numbers, but also shows that the rural elite and the church propagated a myth of the stability, the wholesomeness, and the class-harmony--in short, the "sanctity"--of rural life, a myth that was a key component of Nazi propaganda that helped secure support for the Third Reich in rural areas. Of great interest to historians and students of the period as well as anyone interested in how a fringe radical movement gained wide popular support.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As rural America continues to undergo massive economic and demographic shifts, rural churches are uniquely positioned to provide community leadership. Leading a rural congregation requires a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing these communities, as well as a strong theological and community-focused identity. Allen T. Stanton describes how in establishing this identity, rural leaders build a meaningful and vital ministry. Reclaiming Rural explores the myths and realities of rural places, and how those common narratives impact the leadership of rural churches. Ultimately, rural congregations must practice a contextual understanding of vitality, which understands both the strengths and challenges of leading in a rural setting. Arguing for a practice of evangelism imbued with this mission of vitality, Reclaiming Rural promotes the church as a leader in economic and community development, modeled upon a Wesleyan theology of grace. Acknowledging the many challenges facing rural churches, this book is an energetic and encouraging guide to overcoming social and economic obstacles to build a thriving congregation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church in Rural Community Living in the South: Report of the Church Committee, Second Southern Rural Life Conference The first general work conference of the Southern Rural Life Council was held in 1943. The report of the conference was published under the title: The School and the Changing Pattern of Country Life. The second general work confer ence of the Council was held in 1946. Instead of publishing all of the committee reports of 1946 in a single volume as was done after the first conference, each committee report is being published separately. Separate publications should a'rd wide circulation and usability of the reports. It is to be hoped, however, that separate publications will not hinder the use of all the reports since one of the chief needs of community development is an integration of efforts of all inter ests and groups. It is fitting that the first of the five committee reports to be published deals with the church and rural community living in the South. The church, the institution most com mon to rural neighborhoods and communities, has great responsibility and potential influence. The quality of the influence of the rural church, be it positive or negative, unifying or divisive, is a force to be reckoned with. The quality of living to be found in rural communities depends in no small degree upon the quality of the ministry and the program of the local church. This report attempts to pre sent the need for a philosophy of rural life; the responsibility of the rural church in a world of secular materialism; the function of the church; what the church is doing to improve the quality of living; barriers experienced by church leader ship; what church leadership can do to improve community living; and outstanding illustrations of community co operation. The interest and financial assistance of the General Edu cation Board made possible the establishment of the Southern Rural Life Council and the publication of this report. Book excerpt: While in recent years much attention among theologians has been focused on the city and on what makes a good city, much of (church) life in Britain takes place in the context of rural communities. In the context of their daily work, clergy find themselves confronted with complex ethical, political and social issues. "Church and Countryside" maps out a rural theology that addresses some of the concerns faced by Britain's rural population and those who minister to them. While other books in this field focus on practical (mission-orientated) aspects of ministry in the countryside, Tim Gibson offers a discussion of some of the relevant issues from the point of view of Christian ethics. An accessibly written and thoroughly researched piece of contextual theology that should become core reading for mission and ministry courses in theological colleges and ministry training courses.
