It draws upon an extensive survey of primary and secondary sources on Chinese science and technology, interviews, and field research in China during November 1984; observations and reports from other visitors to the PRC; interviews with Chinese R & D personnel studying in the United States; and interviews with American businessmen involved in trade and technology relations with the PRC. It focuses on China's ability to introduce new products and processes in the R & D production system. The study suggests that, while many factors have impeded technological change, many of the obstacles seem more matters of infrastructure and management than of the availability of technology per se. The Chinese have introduced a number of reforms, with mixed results. On balance, the Chinese electronics industry has achieved noticeable gains in its pursuit of technological innovation, but their full effects are not likely to be felt for some time."--Rand abstracts

Book excerpt: The strategic fit paradigm, originally derived from observations in market-based economies, asserts that an appropriate match between environment and strategy has significant and positive implications for business performance. Based on a random sample of Chinese electronics firms, this study systematically examines the applicability of the strategic fit paradigm in China's centrally planned economy in transition. Results indicate that while environment-strategy coalignment is evident, coalignment only improves performance under certain environmental conditions.

Book excerpt: This book analyses how China’s firms in the consumer electronics (CE) sector have developed their business strategy and corporate governance during the reform process. The CE sector is one of China’s most important and dynamic manufacturing sectors. As one of the earliest market-oriented sectors after 1978, its experience illustrates the adoption of the Western model of management in China. This is the first book to analyse the link between business strategy, corporate governance and performance of firms, explicitly comparing state-, collective-, and privately-owned firms. This book argues that the competitive dynamics of the market are central to the survival of firms in contemporary China. Focuses on the state, collective and private Chinese firms in the consumer electronics sector Provides insights into the interactions among political, economic and corporate factors in the China business environment that influence the strategies and performance of these firms Compares the corporate governance of these Chinese firms across different ownership forms

Book excerpt: Recently, the international division of labour in industrial production has grown increasingly more volatile. The separation between 'high-end' tasks undertaken in the traditional core economies and 'low-end' tasks undertaken in newly emerging economies has become increasingly blurred. The new dynamics and unpredictability of actor and process configurations in internationalized production bring new challenges for research in economic geography, regional economics and management sciences. The allocation of R&D and production mandates within or between enterprises, the setting up, closing down, purchase or sale of subsidiaries at different localities, the shifting patterns of collaborative innovation, together with newly evolving forms of capitalism, all appear to interact in ways not seen before. It appears we have entered a new era termed 'industrial transition'. This book forms the first approach toward conceptualising the term and compiling illustrative empirical underpinnings. Contributions by an international set of renowned economic geographers highlight the major features and case studies of 'industrial transition' and address various questions that matter for the future of our global economy: How are regions and localities affected by the shift of product mandates? In which ways do changes differ between industrial sectors and economic regions? How can regions and localities adequately prepare for or react to foreseeable changes; and how can regional resilience and response capacities be built and enhanced?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along with the political and economic reforms that have characterized the post-Mao era in China there has been a potentially revolutionary change in Chinese science and technology. Here sixteen scholars examine various facets of the current science and technology scene, comparing it with the past and speculating about future trends. Two chapters dealing with science under the Nationalists and under Mao are followed by a section of extensive analysis of reforms under Deng Xiaoping, focusing on the organizational system, the use of human resources, and the emerging response to market forces. Chapters dealing with changes in medical care, agriculture, and military research and development demonstrate how these reforms have affected specific areas during the Chinese shift away from Party orthodoxy and Maoist populism toward professional expertise as the guiding principle in science and technology. Three further chapters deal with China's interface with the world at large in the process of technology transfer. Both the introductory and concluding chapters describe the tension between the Chinese Communist Party structure, with its inclinations toward strict vertical control, and the scientific and technological community's need for a free flow of information across organizational, disciplinary, and national boundaries.

Webber, Wang and Zhu attempt to answer this question through analysis of the concepts of globalization, transition and regionalization. China's approach has been experimental, stressing the liberalization of trade and investment flows and the development of a market economy. By these indexes globalization in China has been gradual and uneven. Integrating Western social science and Chinese research, this book assesses the nature and effect of globalization in China and its implications.

In addition, they discuss the changing situation of joint ventures, collective enterprises, and state-owned businesses. Bringing divergent perspectives to bear from Hong Kong, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and China itself, the marketers and scholars who contributed to this volume have integrated research relating to economic transition with strategic considerations for more effective and competitive marketing plans. In addition to the industry-specific information, this volume includes chapters on entry barriers, e-commerce, market research, branding, and promotion.
