Book excerpt: Jake Diamond is a Chinese antique dealer in San Frncisco and a special variety of sweet and sour sauce. Chun Liu ambles into his shop and offers Jake a piece of Chinese heaven, a 13th Century oil on silk painting by Zheng Mengfu. While theres something oddly familiar about this Mr. Liu, its just not there. The scroll has all provenances and signatures and has been signed off by the experts but go figure, Jake discovers what he believes to be a fatal flaw in the scrolls authenticity. And so begins Jakes Chinese adventure chasing Dr. Liu through the poetic and uniquely Chinese cities of Taipei, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Shuzou and Shanghai. Jakes range of encounters run from Pentecostals, an accusation of murder, to his meeting his devilish jailer when a prisoner in the Korean War and a garlic eating Chinese cop who puts the kibosh to Jakes future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Someone is stealing priceless historic artifacts from China, a nation and population proud of their heritage. Briana Fraser--an Ashland, Oregon, book and travel shop owner who's no stranger to adventure--is tasked with discovering how these valuable artifacts are being stolen and sold to collectors in other countries--and by whom. Suspects are abundant, especially those in Briana's tour group, seen by authorities as the best source of the thefts--as well as good spy cover for our heroine. With her history background, Briana is the ideal cultural spy, but she's still less than prepared for the danger she encounters in her search to unmask the thief. Her adventure takes Briana to the famous terracotta soldiers, the Forbidden City, and the massive Great Wall. And her up-to-date look at a long-mysterious country, now opened to the West, is an added aspect to her search. With typical Briana fervor, she tackles the task, putting herself and her new friends in danger. To save her life and speed up the mission, she is joined in China by her former partners from Professor Phillips' secret semi-spy operations to help solve the caper. But as things heat up between Briana and one of her partners, events conspire to get in the way of romance. About the Author Chloe Ryan Winston was born on a ranch in Eastern Oregon, graduated from Marylhurst University, and earned a master's degree at Idaho State University. She lived in Ashland, Oregon, which is featured in her writing, as well as Mexico, and has traveled extensively to fifty-eight countries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cat Tales: Kitty Capers and More is a charming and heartwarming collection of stories, artwork, and personal reflections on pets and the positive effects they have on people’s lives. The first part of the book contains illustrations by the author and journal entries from a senior citizen named Ruth. Ruth chronicles the arrival of her diverse family of cats that she adopted—or did they adopt her? It all began when a half-starved stray cat came to Ruth’s door. Against her better judgment, she fed the cat and fell in love with not a “he” but a very pregnant “she,” whom she named Lady. Lady disappeared for a few days, returning with a tiny grey kitten, which she dropped at Ruth’s feet. A week later, she brought four more kittens—one day at a time. In Ruth’s words, “She must have been testing me to see if I would take good care of her first baby before she trusted me with the rest of her family.” The second section, Kitty Capers and More, starts with the many positive effects that pets have on a person’s health—both mental and physiological. The author includes compelling statistics such as pet ownership boosting oxytocin and lowering cortisol, which can reduce stress and ease pain. Love is the most important health attribute we have, and pets are one of nature’s best sources of love. Edick finishes with accounts of her own pets and those of her family and her friends, accompanied by artwork and photographs that tell the story of how pets have played an important role in her life, the lives of her children, grandchildren, great, and great-great grandchildren. Not just about cats, the book shares stories of special dogs, horses and even a pig named Leadbelly.

Book excerpt: The War Party: The Politics of National Defense is written to challenge the widely held misconception that the Republican Party is the party to trust on issues relating to National Defense. As the author makes clear, for most of the last century, the Democrats were the Party the nation turned to when it became necessary to face the realities of international threats to our freedom and our survival as a great military power. It explores how the first six democratic Presidents in the 20th Century made strengthening the military their primary focus, while six Republican Presidents worked to weaken national defense. Finally it critiques the current administration?s national security policies and finds areas of serious deficiencies.
