Book excerpt: THE name Gospel of the Infancy is now commonly given to the narratives that make up the first two chapters of the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. Luke, adding moreover, for the latter, the genealogy contained in the third chapter: these narratives refer to the birth of Jesus and to His life until the time of .His baptism. The value of these documents has become the object of most special attacks. Many scholars readily look upon them as a kind of prehistoric Gospel story written according to the law set forth by Heine in the preface of his edition of Apollodorus. At the beginning of all ancient historical records we find some myths. Those professors in the chief universities of Germany are few, indeed, who have not struck out of their Creed the belief in Christ's Virgin-Birth. How many are the ministers of the Evangelical Churches who still hold the Christmas night as a night with an historical significance? Until our own times, it is true, the Church of England had quite successfully withstood the blows of unbelieving critics, but it cannot be deni.ed that, within the last ten years or so, the traditional views have lost ground even at Oxford and Cambridge: a fact that is, moreover, only too plainly paralleled by Protestantism in the United States also. Parsons and ministers entrusted with the care of souls among common people are influenced by the decrease of belief in the higher spheres of Universities. As to the situation in the Catholic Church, she has nothing to fear for her dogma. The humblest of her children know well that under pain of the wreck of their faith, they must believe from the depth of their souls and profess with their lips, that "Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary." However, in spite of the precision and of the vigor of their belief, those Catholics who read cannot but notice the noise of the fight raging around them, and they feel instinctively the need to take up the defensive. On what historical grounds do they hold in its integrity that Christian dogma which Liberal Protestants throwaway so light-heartedly? The purpose of this little book is precisely to help them to answer that question.

Book excerpt: Updated Edition of a Bestselling Study of Jesus and the Gospels In this work Darrell Bock, a leading evangelical New Testament scholar who speaks and teaches around the world, and Benjamin Simpson show that a coherent portrait of Jesus emerges from the four Gospels when they are taken seriously as historical documents. When read together, the Gospels provide a clear picture of Jesus and his unique claims to authority. This book surveys all the Gospel units and relates them to their parallel passages, showing how the literary and canonical relationships work. Offering up-to-date interaction with the latest discussions about Jesus, the second edition has been substantially revised and updated throughout and includes three new chapters on how we got the Gospels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fictional account of the life of Christ “illuminated by ferocious wit, gentle passion, and poetry”—from the Nobel Prize-winning author of Skylight (Los Angeles Times Book Review). For José Saramago, the life of Jesus Christ and the story of his Passion were things of this earth: a child crying, a gust of wind, the caress of a woman half asleep, the bleat of a goat or the bark of a dog, a prayer uttered in the grayish morning light. The Holy Family reflects the real complexities of any family, but this is realism filled with vision, dream, and omen. Saramago’s deft psychological portrait of a savior who is at once the Son of God and a young man of this earth is an expert interweaving of poetry and irony, spirituality and irreverence. The result is nothing less than a brilliant skeptic’s wry inquest into the meaning of God and of human existence. “Enough to assure [Saramago] a place in the universal library and in human memory.”—The Nation “Fiction that engages the mind as well as the spirit.”—Kirkus Reviews “Mixes magic, myth, and reality into a potent brew.”—Booklist Praise for José Saramago “The greatest writer of our time.”—Chicago Tribune “A literary master.”—The Boston Globe “Saramago is the most tender of writers . . . With a clear-eyed and compassionate acknowledgment of things as they are, and a quality that can only be termed wisdom. We should be grateful when it is handed to us in such generous measure.”—The New York Times “Saramago’s fiction operates in a realm not far from fable: the territory of Kafka, Gogol, and Borges.”—Los Angeles Times

Book excerpt: Bart Ehrman--the New York Times bestselling author of Misquoting Jesus and a recognized authority on the early Christian Church--and Zlatko Plese--a foremost authority on Christian Gnosticism--here offer a valuable compilation of over 40 ancient gospel texts and textual fragments that do not appear in the New Testament. This comprehensive collection contains Gospels describing Jesus's infancy, ministry, Passion, and resurrection, and includes the controversial manuscript discoveries of modern times, such as the Gospel of Thomas and the most recent Gospel to be discovered, the Gospel of Judas Iscariot. Each translation begins with a thoughtful examination of important historical, literary, and textual issues in order to place the Gospel in its proper context. This volume is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in early Christianity and the deeper meanings of these apocryphal Gospels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our image of Jesus Christ is mostly based upon the tradition which can be found in the New Tes-tament. The four canonical gospels share the same basic outline of the life of Jesus. Preached for centuries by priests, monks, theologians, etc. biblical image of Jesus is deeply incised into the col-lective memory through out the Christian world and beyond._x000D_ Bearing this in mind, it should be noted however, that most of the testimonies regarding Jesus' life and work written by his contemporaries or persons who lived immediately after his death, never made it to the New Testament. These texts compose the so called New Testament apocrypha. Those are writings by early Christians that give accounts of Jesus and his teachings, the nature of God, or the teachings of his apostles and of their lives. _x000D_ The New Testament apocrypha offer a somewhat different image of Jesus from the one that is fa-miliar to the most of us. Most of these texts are not opposed to the canonical gospels but they pro-vide additional information regarding Jesus' life. Therefore, the best way to observe the New Tes-tament apocrypha is to observe them as a missing puzzle. Jointly, with the canonical gospels they will help us fully to perceive Jesus and to get closer to his human nature. _x000D_ The intention of this book is to shed light to Jesus' life entirely and to bring him closer to the readers of these passages. After reading this book one will meet the real Jesus Christ as he truly was._x000D_ Contents:_x000D_ Infancy Gospels_x000D_ The Gospel of the Birth of Mary_x000D_ The Gospel Called the Protevangelion _x000D_ The First Gospel of the Infancy of Jesus Christ _x000D_ The Second, or St. Thomas's Gospel of the Infancy of Jesus Christ _x000D_ The History of Joseph the Carpenter_x000D_ Passion Gospels_x000D_ The Gospel of Nicodemus, Formerly Called the Acts of Pontius Pilate_x000D_ The Gospel of Peter_x000D_ Dialogues With Jesus_x000D_ The Gospel of the Egyptians_x000D_ General Texts Concerning Jesus_x000D_ The Letter of Lentulus_x000D_ Pistis Sophia _x000D_
