Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chief Data Officer (CDO) role emerged in 2001 and has since become increasingly important in organizations of all kinds. This role continues to raise questions about its relevance, responsibilities, positioning, and authority. Despite recent publications, debates remain lively. "Data Office and Chief Data Officers" addresses key questions such as: Is there a need for one or multiple Chief Data Officers? What is the framework for this role? How should it be defined, implemented, and evolved? What are the expected benefits of this role? The book offers a rigorous and didactic analysis, starting with an exposition of the motivations and benefits behind creating a Data Office. Then it shows that this aspect of enterprise architecture is rarely synonymous with a distinct physical organizational entity. In reality, it encompasses a wide variety of organizational structures that create and maintain shared enterprise data management capabilities. Finally, the book effectively illustrates a variety of organizational models, details scenarios for implementing the CDO role, and explains the diverse functions fulfilled by CDOs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a world where Digital Transformation has become a C-level concern. To face the opportunities and threats resulting from new technologies, companies increasingly introduce the position of Chief Digital Officers (CDOs). With the novelty of this role comes much uncertainty and a lack of guidelines on how to perform the job. Although academia made progress on building frameworks offering CDOs rough guidance, the exact how with tools and methods, is still missing. Furthermore, new and user-friendlier publishing formats are used, ensuring the information reaches the target audience. This research relies on design science research to examine the design features of a publishing medium of tools and methods supporting CDOs. The methods used within this thesis were a literature review, a document review of 18 books currently on the market, and six interviews with CDO in different sectors. The aim of the interviews was gaining an understanding of the needs of CDOs and testing the first artifact/prototype. This research resulted in three main key findings. Any collection of tool and method for CDOs needs to be (1) quickly consumable since CDOs are under high pressure to deliver results justifying their spending, (2) Hands-on since CDOs implement the developed Digital Transformation concepts and (3) Up to date, meaning not older than four years. Further research should be directed towards developing a final marketable product forming an essential guide for CDOs and executives responsible for guiding their companies through Digital Transformation.

Book excerpt: The Engineering Management discipline remains complex and multidisciplinary, and has progressed and broadened in scope significantly over the last 10–20 years. Previously, the discipline has been fragmented and not aligned with the purposes of economic development, mega-project delivery, and technological progress. Digital engineering has revolutionized the field of engineering by introducing digital tools and technologies to the design, creation, operation, and maintenance of physical systems, products, and services. It has enabled more efficient, effective, and sustainable solutions, and has the potential to drive significant innovation and improve the way we design, build, and operate physical systems. This handbook addresses new content of complexity by offering new engineering concepts such as simple, complicated, and complex, which have never been included in this discipline before and will generate interest from higher education, financial institutions, and technology companies. Handbook of Engineering Management: The Digital Economy focuses on multidisciplinary integration and complex evolving systems. It discusses the incorporation of a system of systems along with engineering economic strategies for sustainable economic growth. This handbook highlights functional leadership as the main part of an engineering manager’s competency and discusses how to form alliances strategically. In addition, it presents a comprehensive guide for the implementation of an environmental management system and shows how environmental and social impacts can be assessed in an organization applying digital tools. This handbook also brings together the three important areas of Engineering Management: Knowledge Management, the Digital Economy, and Digital Manufacturing. In addition, this handbook provides a comprehensive guide to implementing an environmental management system and shows how environmental and social impacts in an organization can be assessed using digital tools. Based on the authors’ practical experience, it describes various management approaches and explains how such a system can be used to prioritize actions and resources, increase efficiency, minimize costs, and lead to better, more informed decision making. It is essential to follow a systematic approach and to ask the right questions, whether the system is managed and implemented by humans, AI, or a combination of both. This handbook is laid out in a series of simple steps and dispels the jargon and myths surrounding this important management tool. This handbook is an ideal read for engineering managers, project managers, industrial and systems engineers, supply chain engineers, professionals who want to advance their knowledge, and graduate students.

Book excerpt: Bridging the technical and the economical worlds of the energy sector and establishing a solid understanding of today's energy supply as a complex system– with these missions in mind, the book at hand compactly describes the fundamentals of electrical power supply in a dialogue between technology and non-technology, between academia and practitioners, and between nations and continents. Today, energy supply is a complex global system – it is time for a dialogue of the disciplines. In this book, experts explain in an understandable manner the technical foundations and selected specific aspects of today's electrical power supply. Each chapter supplies a fundamental introduction in layman's terms to the topic and serves technical specialists both as a reference and as an opportunity to expand their knowledge. Practical examples and case studies complete the compendium. Technology and economics in the energy sector work on the same questions out of different perspectives. The increasing complexity and interconnections and the epochal upheavals in the energy sector make a comprehensive understanding of the energy sector as a system an essential requirement. This necessitates an ongoing and successful dialogue between the disciplines and between academia and practitioners. To that aim, this book serves both as a compact reference for everyone interested in the energy sector and as a true translation aid between the professional disciplines.
