Book Synopsis An Anthology of French and Francophone Singers from A to Z by : Michaël Abecassis
Download or read book An Anthology of French and Francophone Singers from A to Z written by Michaël Abecassis and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every musical form has had an impact on the linguistic practices of our society. French song is a vector of cultural, social, and stylistic values. Throughout the world, songs in the French language are used in the teaching of French: professors incorporate songs into the curriculum in order to illustrate differences of register and linguistic variation, as well as to raise lexical or grammatical questions. As a form of popular expression, song is a genre that has, in recent years, become the focus of serious academic scholarship and criticism. However, few linguists have paid attention to French song and its linguistic uses. This richly illustrated mini-dictionary about French singers fills this gap by offering a collection of portraits of the greatest singers of the French language and how they have constructed the musical landscape in both France and the larger francophone community and the world as a whole. Through (re)discovering these classic and contemporary artists who contribute to the creation of the sonorous universe of the 20th and 21st centuries, the volume determines how these musical genres influence the French language and nourish our collective imagination. By plunging into francophone song, one can achieve a better understanding of the culture and the language of its speakers.
Download or read book Horror Anthology written by Wilhelm Hauff and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-30 with total page 13371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This horror anthology is a remarkable collection that spans the gamut of the most chilling and macabre tales in English literature, from the eerie subtleties of psychological terror to the stark dread of the supernatural. The collection showcases a diverse range of literary styles, from the gothic to the modernist, encapsulating the evolution of horror as a genre across different periods. Standouts in the collection reveal the genre's capacity to explore the deepest fears of the human psyche, making manifest the anxieties of the times. The editors have meticulously curated works that not only entertain but also serve as a critical lens through which to examine the broader cultural and historical contexts from which these stories spring. The contributing authors and editors, hailing from varied backgrounds, bring a rich tapestry of cultural perspectives to the anthology, underscoring the universal appeal and adaptability of the horror genre. Figures such as Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft, whose work has defined and redefined horror literature, are presented alongside authors like Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Elizabeth Gaskell, who contribute uniquely feminist perspectives to the collection. This amalgam of voices aligns with notable literary movements, including Romanticism, Victorianism, and Modernism, providing readers with a comprehensive overview of the genre's evolution and its intersections with social and political issues. This anthology presents a unique opportunity for readers to engage with the horror genre in all its diversity and complexity. It encourages a deeper exploration of the themes of fear, the unknown, and the supernatural, showcasing how these themes resonate across different times and cultures. The collection is an invaluable resource for both aficionados of horror literature and those new to the genre, offering educational insights and prompts for further reflection. By fostering a dialogue between the works of different authors, this anthology serves not only as a testament to the enduring power of horror literature but also as an invitation to explore the shadows that linger in the human mind.

Book Synopsis The Music of Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) by : Carl B. Schmidt
Download or read book The Music of Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) written by Carl B. Schmidt and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1995-10-19 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name of Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was first brought to prominence in the 1920s as a member of Les Six, a group of young French composers encouraged by Satie and Cocteau. His subsequent fame spread well beyond France, and he is coming to be regarded as one of this century's most significant composers. His compositions are heard constantly in concert halls the world over, and numerous recordings, including complete sets of songs and piano music, have been released. Books, articles and more than a dozen doctoral dissertations have discussed his music. Carl Schmidt's catalogue of Poulenc's works represents the first comprehensive attempt to list an oeuvre which numbers approximately 185 compositions written from his teenage years until his death at the age of 63. The Catalogue indentifies a number of unpublished works, and adds a small group of compositions to his musical canon for the first time. Each work, whether complete or unfinished, published or unpublished, is described fully. Catalogue entries list and describe all known printed editions (including reprints) and manuscript copies of each work. In addition, they provide detailed compositional histories based on numerous letters, documents, and press accounts, many of which have not been published previously. Russian interest in Poulenc's music, manifested in press runs exceeding one million copies, is also revealed for the first time.

Book Synopsis The Art of Saxophone Playing by : Larry Teal
Download or read book The Art of Saxophone Playing written by Larry Teal and published by Alfred Music. This book was released on 1963 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Larry Teal, the best method of learning to play the saxophone is to study with a competent teacher. Teal's studies were mostly of instruments other than the saxophone, but as a student at a Chautauqua summer session, he came under the influence of Georges Barrère, the eminent French flutist. He played bass clarinet with the Detroit Symphony, but he continued to be absorbed by the saxophone. As a result of his acquired expertise and growing reputation, he was appointed to a full-time faculty position as a saxophone teacher by the University of Michigan -- the first ever to receive such an appointment from a major university. During his 21-year tenure, he attracted students from all over, thus exerting an ever widening influence on saxophone teaching and performing.
