Book excerpt: Teaches and enables students to build confidence in drawing and manipulating curly arrows, a fundamental skill for all organic chemists This book is an interactive approach to learning about chemistry of the carbonyl group—inviting students to work through its pages with pencil and paper in hand. It educates with the belief that the most effective way to learn is by practice and interaction. With this in mind, the reader is asked to predict what would happen under a specific set of reaction conditions. The book is divided into frames: each frame poses a question and invites the reader to predict what will happen. Subsequent frames give the solution but then pose more questions to develop a theme further. Chemistry of the Carbonyl Group: A Programmed Approach to Organic Reaction Mechanisms, Revised Edition provides a solid grounding in the fundamental reactions of carbonyls. Presented in full colour to enhance the understanding of mechanisms within chemistry, the chapters of this step-by-step guide cover: nucleophilic addition to the carbonyl group; nucleophilic substitution; nucleophilic substitution at the carbonyl group with complete removal of carbonyl oxygen; carbanions and enolisation; and building organic molecules from carbonyl compounds. A must-have book for undergraduate chemists to emphasise understanding in carbonyl group chemistry Goes through all the stages of basic carbonyl chemistry, detailing even the simplest mechanisms A step-by-step learning guide to synthetic chemistry for the first year of a chemistry degree, with all the information needed for independent learning Provides a solid grounding in the fundamental reactions of carbonyls which will inform the understanding of many other organic chemistry reactions Chemistry of the Carbonyl Group: A Programmed Approach to Organic Reaction Mechanisms - Revised Edition is packed with all the information on synthetic chemistry that every first-year student will need in order to learn independently.

Book excerpt: The carbonyl group is undoubtedly one of the most important functional groups in organic chemistry, both in its role as reactive center for synthesis or derivatisation and as crucial feature for special structural or physiological properties. Vast and profound progress has been made in all aspects modern carbonyl chemistry. These achievements are, however, rather dispersed in the literature and it is often not easy for the researcher obtain a comprehensive overview of a relevant topic. Modern Carbonyl Chemistry overcomes this inconvenience by collating the information for appropriate themes. In this work internationally renowned experts and leaders in the field have surveyed recent aspects and modern features in carbonyl chemistry, such as cascade-reactions, one-pot-syntheses, recognition, or site differentiation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of our earlier book on transition metal mediated organic synthesis, * there has been a widespread increase of interest in this topic, and transition metal based methodology has become firmly established in many areas of organic chemistry. The direct, catalytic formation of organic carbonyl compounds using carbon monoxide as the source of the carbonyl group has seen exceptional progress, and this carbonylation chemistry is being used increasingly in research and on a larger scale for fine chemicals production. In view of these developments, there is a need for a modem, practi cally oriented book dealing with transition metal based carbonylation chemistry. The present monograph should help fulfill this need, since it is intended specifically to foster the adoption of catalytic carbonylation as a general tool in synthetic organic chemistry. It deals exclusively with reactions involving the interconversion of carbon monoxide and organic carbonyl compounds, and although the majority of the reactions discussed involve catalytic formation of carbonyl compounds, potentially valuable syntheses requiring stoichiometric quantities of transition metal are also included. In addition, a chapter is devoted to the remarkably useful reverse transformation (decarbonylation), in which an organic carbonyl group is eliminated in the form of carbon monoxide.

Sc., Chemistry, M. Sc, Organic Chemistry as well as B. Sc., graduates. The chemistry of the carbonyl compound is virtually the backbone of synthetic organic chemistry. Carbonyl compounds serve as the starting material for the synthesis of various naturally occurring molecules viz., cholesterol, caryophyllene, santonin, reserpine, etc. In the present book, I am concentrating more on mechanistic aspects of the reactions involving carbonyl compounds, which are not discussed in detail in other textbooks. This book provides insight in many areas of carbonyl compounds which includes nomenclature, identification, preparation, structure, reactions, estimations and their synthetic applications.
