Book excerpt: Being a precursor to many industrial chemicals, aniline's main use is in the manufacture of precursors to polyurethane. Like most volatile amines, it possesses the somewhat unpleasant odor of rotten fish. It ignites readily, burning with a smoky flame characteristic of aromatic compounds. In this book, the authors discuss the structural and physical properties, reactions and environmental effects of aniline. Topics include the green catalytic process for the synthesis of aromatic amines from hydrogenation of aromatic nitro compounds; aniline-based polybenzoxazine and their copolymers or composites; one-step C-H amination offers a new synthetic strategy towards the clean and effective production of aniline; synthesis and structures of gossypol mono-aldehyde derivatives with o-substituted anilines; and oxidative polymerization of diphenylamine-2-carbonic acid.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human life is simple as well as quite intrigued and it always tries to find solutions to unending problems and challenges. We know that the need is the mother of invention and the scientists in the world are saints of modern age, as based on their tireless efforts the humans have made a significant progress in various fields as telecommunications, information technology, space technology, infrastructures, food technology through green revolution, life-saving drugs, etc. All these fields need chemicals, which must be manufactured at commercial scales. However, the old technologies are handicapped with unlimited limitations for commercial production of these much needed chemicals. As an old man needs help to cross the road, such limitations in the commercial productions of these chemicals are overcome with co-operative effects of other additives as promoters of reaction rates, which in turn help produce the desired products in quantitative yields. Isn’t it interesting to find out what kind of these promoters are, as they have been identified and successfully used through a long journey of innovative, cost-effective process developments with excellent yields and purities of the targeted molecules, which find number of applications in human life. New technologies with above attributes are the essence of this book entitled as “Aniline and its Analogs”, which covers the old and new methods and technologies of their preparations and manufacturing till date, which is compiled by a versatile and an accomplished scientist.

Book excerpt: Organic Chemistry provides a comprehensive discussion of the basic principles of organic chemistry in their relation to a host of other fields in both physical and biological sciences. This book is written based on the premise that there are no shortcuts in organic chemistry, and that understanding and mastery cannot be achieved without devoting adequate time and attention to the theories and concepts of the discipline. It lays emphasis on connecting the basic principles of organic chemistry to real world challenges that require analysis, not just recall. This text covers topics ranging from structure and bonding in organic compounds to functional groups and their properties; identification of functional groups by infrared spectroscopy; organic reaction mechanisms; structures and reactions of alkanes and cycloalkanes; nucleophilic substitution and elimination reactions; conjugated alkenes and allylic systems; electrophilic aromatic substitution; carboxylic acids; and synthetic polymers. Throughout the book, principles logically evolve from one to the next, from the simplest to the most complex examples, with abundant connections between the text and real world applications. There are extensive examples of biological relevance, along with a chapter on organometallic chemistry not found in other standard references. This book will be of interest to chemists, life scientists, food scientists, pharmacists, and students in the physical and life sciences. Book excerpt: Prior to 1979, consideration of the problem of the carcinogenicity of the aromatic amine class of chemicals took place primarily in poster sessions and symposia of annual meetings of the American Association for Cancer Research and analogous international associations. In November 1979 the first meeting concerned with the aromatic amines was held in Rockville, Haryland under primary sponsorship of the National Cancer Institute. The proceedings from this meeting were published as Monograph 58 of the Journal of the National Cancel' Institute in 1981. The second meeting in this series, the Second International Conference on N-Substituted Aryl Compounds, was held in March/April of 1982 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The National Cancer Institute and The National Center for Toxicological Research were the primary sponsors of this meeting. The proceedings were published as Volume 49 of the journal En-vil'onmental Health Perspectives in 1983. The third meeting in this series was held in April of 1987 at the Dearborn Hyatt in Dearborn, Michigan. The principal sponsor of this meeting was the Heyer L. Pre ntis Comprehensive Cancer Center of Metropolitan Detroit. The proceedings, Carcinogenic and Mutagenic Responses to Aromatic Amines and Nitroal'enes, were published in 1987 by Elsevier Press. The fourth meeting was held in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 15-19, 1989.

Based on the very latest edition of Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, the contents represent the most up-to-date source of information available. The 8 volumes of alphabetically arranged articles provide coverage of the manufacturing of chemicals, the design of processes, the operation of chemical plants, and the markets of the products. Internationally respected authors, from industry and academia and from the world's major industrialized countries, provide a complete picture for each chemical. The typical pattern of an article is as follows: - Introduction - Properties - Chemical reactions - Production - Legal aspects - Quality and analysis - Uses - Economic aspects - Toxicology and occupational health - References A keyword index, an author index and a CAS-registry-number index complete the contents of this encyclopedia. Top-quality illustrations, clear diagrams and charts, and the extensive use of tables enhance presentation and provide a unique level of detail. The encyclopedia will be an invaluable source of information for chemists, chemical engineers, patent attorneys, marketing specialists and all those involved in today's chemical industry.

Book excerpt: Medicinal chemistry is a complex science that lies at the very heart of drug discovery. Poor solubility, complex metabolism, tissue retention and slow elimination are just some of the properties of investigational compounds that present a challenge to the design and conduct of ADMET studies. Medicinal chemistry experience and knowledge relating to how a lead structure was modified to solve a specific problem is generally very challenging to retrieve. Presented in a visual and accessible style, this book provides rapid solutions to overcome the universal challenges to optimizing ADMET.
