Book excerpt: The surface of wool fibres is characterised in terms of their critical surface tension and wettability using Zisman's (1964) method of treating contact angle data. The wettability of wool fibres is directly relevant to modern shrinkproofing techniques which incorporate the deposition of polymers on to wool, completely encapsulating the individual fibres, and masking the scale structure which is responsible for felting. The chemical nature of the surface of wool has long been a subject for discussion. The presence or absence of, certain chemical groups present at the wool surface is investigated by measuring the change in wettability of individual wool fibres after a number of site-specific reactions. The conclusions from this aspect of the work were further supported by data arising from an examination of wool using multiple attenuated and transmission infra-red techniques. The implications of the change in contact angle data as a result of chemical treatment have been examined using the empirical and theoretical methods of Fowkes (1957), Neumann (1974) and Kaelble (1971), the object being to examine the surface energy of wool and other low energy substrates in terms of dispersion, polar and hydrogen bonding components. A method is proposed based on Kaelble's (1971) ideas by which the relative dispersion and non-dispersion contributions to the surface energy of a low energy substrate may be determined............

In this structure, the inner cortex is hydrophilic in nature due to the large number of polar groups contained in the polypeptide chains of the cortex. On the other hand, the outer surface of wool fibre is hydrophobic due to the presence of a high degree of disulphide cross-linkages in the cuticle and a film of fatty acids on the fibre surface which acts as a surface barrier against diffusion into wool fibres . Many chemical methods have been developed for modifying the wool fibre surface, such as chlorination and polymer deposition but these processes are often very harsh and modify the bulk properties, besides creating effluent problems . As a result of increasing environmental awareness and tougher government legislation on effluent discharge around the world, alternative methods with lower environment impact need to be explored and one such method is surface modification by physical means. Different types of radiation techniques have been utilized as alternatives to chemical processing of wool. In this book, focus is on the application of UV excimer radiation as a surface treatment to enhance the dyeability of wool fabric.
