Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemist, Vol. 1: Or, Reporter of Chemical Discoveries and Improvements, and Protector of the Rights of the Chemist and Chemical Manufacturer We have now completed the first volume of Tim Chemist, and terminated our labors for the year. We shall take a brief survey of the progress which the work has made, and of the advancement of the several branches of science, of which it is the record. That it has shared the usual fate of all works of the kind - that it has roused the envy of rival journals - and that it has been the subject of futile attempts to injure it, mid retard its acquirement of public estimation-is no more than might be expected. The Chemist, however, has had more than these to struggle with and to defeat: worthlessness, knavery, pitiable ignorance, and deception in parties who should have assisted us in our undertaking, but who took upon themselves that which they have left us to perform; together with the feeble efforts of contemporary malignity. Such means as have been adopted for the purpose of crushing our work, had they conic from ordinary sources, would have excited no wonder; but when it is stated that the engine of our attempted destruction was a Magazine of Philosophy - it may cause some surprise. In the first of these cases, we had an easy alternative, that of adding, to the labor and responsibility of editing, the whole expenses of the journal from the commencement to the present time, which we cheerfully undertook, from the firmest conviction of the ultimate success of our labors; and with every hope of rendering it, from time to time, still more deserving of public favor. In the latter case added to our most ineffable contempt, so far from succumbing, as doubtless it was hoped we should have done, to the unworthy stratagems of our opponents, we were only the more resolved to exert all our endeavours to render every number of the work still more perfect. Our triumph has been most complete; and The Chemist has now arrived at a sale, far exceeding our most sanguine anticipations; and we have received, we hope not undeservedly, the most unqualified approbation of men of science, and the more enlightened journals, which is far from being the ordinary lot of works of this nature; and it has established itself - "Per varios casus, per tot discrimina rerum." The want of a journal expressly devoted to Chemistry, Chemical Manufactures and Pharmacy, has long been felt; there is not one which can be considered as at all adapted for the chemical reader. There arc, it is true, some few miscellaneous works, containing articles in various sciences and arts, and one or two others, composed of dull and heavy subjects of abstruse calculation, written expressly for those journals, and which seem as if they were intended to gratify the inclination of their authors for displaying their profundity, and to limit the number of their readers. These works form no record of chemical science, which should consist of all that occurs within the period of publication. It was to supply this deficiency that The Chemist has been established, and every pains has been taken to keep it in the closest conformity with its object. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemical Gazette, or Journal of Practical Chemistry, Vol. 5: In All Its Applications to Pharmacy, Arts and Manufactures; 1847 On the Precipitation and Separation of Alumina and Peroxide of Iron. By Dr. W. Knop. In the precipitation Of the peroxide of iron and alumina by am monia, and their subsequent separation by potash, it is a matter of common experience that these two oxides are extremely difficult to obtain perfectly free from one another. It was to be expected that a more perfect separation would be obtained if this mutual affinity were destroyed previously by combining one of the two substances with some other body. When the precipitate of hydrated oxide of iron and alumina is boiled with potash with the addition of a suitable quantity of sulphuret of ammonium, until the liquid, which at first appears green, deposits, after being left quiet for a time, some black akes, and appears yellowish, owing to the formation Of a slight ex cess of sulphuret Of potassium, and no longer passes green through the filter, which is very soon attained, the alumina, on subsequent precipitation, is Obtained on slow desiccation as a transparent mass, and on quick drying and calcining of such a pure white colour as to leave no doubt of its being extremely pure. If we add to this the observations recently published by Malaguti and Durocher*, with respect to the complete precipitation of alumina, which was found to be most perfect under all circumstances with sulphuret of ammo nium, it is evident that these two oxides should, when it is prac ticable, be directly precipitated with sulphuret of ammonium, the precipitate washed with water containing a little sulphuret of ammo nium, and the alumina extracted with potash to which a few drops of sulphuret of ammonium have been added, in order to obtain at once a perfect precipitation and separation of these two bodies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemical Gazette, or Journal of Practical Chemistry, in All Its Applications to Pharmacy, Arts and Manufactures, 1847, Vol. 5 Chan. Is not altered, either in the cold or on boiling, by a solution of cl'iron; while from the solution of the nitrate or sul phate the whole of the mercury is eliminated, even in the cold, by the probosulphate of iron. The solution of the perchloride of' mer 'cury'contains consequently no muriate of the oxide which would be reduced by the protosulphate of iron. The greater afiinit of the mercury for chlorine than for oxygen is moreover-evident rom the circumstance that nitric acid, and even sulphuric acid, do not de compose the perchloride of mercury, and convert it into an salt, either with or without the application of heat. The protege? Of mercury cannot be compared with the protochloride, on account ofthe insolubility of the latter: but that the mercury is likewise, in this cue, combined more intimately with the chlorine than in the sale with oxygen and acids, is evident from the fact that the proto sulphate of iron does not decompose the moist protochloride of mercury, while the mercury is instantly precipitated in a metallic ante from a solution of the protonitrate by a solution of the proto sulphate of iron. On this account a solution of protochloride of iron likewise produces in protonitrate of mercury a precipitate of proto chloride, which is not decomposed by any excess of the protochlo ride of iron. In like manner the protochloride of mercury is not decomposed by carbonate of baryta or lime, or the bicarbonates of the fixed alkalies, while these readily decompose solutions of the protonitrate of mercury. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemical News and Journal of Physical Science, (With Which Is Incorporated the "Chemical Gazette"), 1866, Vol. 13: A Journal of Practical Chemistry in All Its Applications to Pharmacy, Arts, and Manufactures This warning is connected with a narrative of the unfortunate fate of two young chemists - one a German from Marburg, Dr. C. Ulrich; the other an Englishman, Mr. T. Sloper - who have been the victims of poisoning by mercuric methide, in consequence of which the former has died, and the other lies ill beyond all hope of recovery. The sad fate of these two young men has excited the deepest sympathy in scientific circles both in England and the Continent. The writer, who was living in London at the time of the occurrence, has especial reasons to regret it, since he had known Dr. Ulrich for several years, and highly esteemed him as a persevering and talented young chemist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemical Gazette, or Journal of Practical Chemistry, in All Its Applications to Pharmacy, Arts and Manufactures, 1850, Vol. 8 Weight, grs. It was first digested in nitric acid. Efi'er vescence soon ceased, but the solution continued turbid from the presence of black powder. Hydrochloric acid was then added, and the digestion continued. The black powder was soon dissolved, and a bright green solution obtained. To this a slight excess of pot ash was added, and then sulphuret of potassium prepared extempore by boiling a solution of potash with flowers of sulphur. Digestion was continued during some hours, after which the precipitate was washed on a filter with water containing some sulphuret of potus sium. The filtrate was digested with excess of hydrochloric acid until the excess of sulphur had completely subsided, reduced by evaporation and filtered; chloride of magnesium and excess of um monia were then added. After standing about forty-eight hours, the precipitate was washed with cold water containing ammonia. It was redissolved by hydrochloric acid, and again precipitated as before. After standing more than twenty-four hours, it was filtered and washed with cold water containing ammonia. By ignition, gr. Of phosphate of magnesia was obtained, which is equivalent to per cent. Of phosphorus. The precipitate obtained by sulphuret of potassium was digested with nitric acid; from the solution, diluted and filtered, the copper was precipitated by hs. The sulphuret of copper was digested with nitric acid, and then evaporated to dryness after the addition of an excess of sulphuric acid. The copper was precipitated by potash. By ignition, 2547 grs. Of oxide of copper (cuq) were obtained, which are equivalent to per cent. Of metallic copper. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
