Book excerpt: Why would any educated scientist with a PhD advocate a literal interpretation of the six days of creation? Why, indeed, when only one in three Americans believes "the Bible is the actual word of God and is to be taken literally, word for word" according to a recent Gallup poll. Science can neither prove nor disprove evolution any more than it can creation. Certainly there are no human eyewitness accounts of either. However, certain factors are present today which are capable of swaying one's beliefs one way or the other. In this book are the testimonies of fifty men and women holding doctorates in a wide range of scientific fields who have been convicted by the evidence to believe in a literal six-day creation. For example, meet: The geneticist who concludes that there must have been 150 billion forerunners of "modern man" in order for the natural selection required by evolution to have taken place in the development of man. The evidence for such vast numbers of "prehistoric man" is in dire shortage. The orthodontist who discovered that European museum fossils of ancient man have been tampered with to adhere to evolution theories. The geologist who studied under the late Stephen Jay Gould and literally cut the Bible to pieces before totally rejecting evolution. All fifty of these scientists, through faith and scientific fact, have come to the conclusion that God's Word is true and everything had its origin not so very long ago, in the beginning, In Six Days.

Book excerpt: AMONG the various pursuits that engage the human mind, there are few so attractive as Geology, none so important as Revelation. Each of these two studies has an interest peculiar to itself. The one is chiefly concerned about the world in which we are living: the other about the world to which we are hastening. Geology leads us down into the depths of the Earth, and there, unfolding to our view a long series of strange unwritten records impressed on lasting monuments by the hand of Nature, it proceeds to trace back the history of our Globe through myriads of ages into the distant past. Revelation, on the other hand, comes to us from above; and setting forth the far more wonderful records of God’s dealings with man, holds out the hope of another world “everlasting in the heavens” which shall still remain when this earth and all the works that are therein shall have melted away with fervent heat. But, it may be asked, why should two such incongruous topics be set down for discussion side by side? To answer this question is to explain the scope and design of the present work. We are not going to write a Manual of Geology; nor yet a Treatise on Revelation. Taken separately, these two subjects have been handled with eminent skill and ability; the one by the votaries of Science, the other by the friends of Theology. It is our purpose to consider them not so much in themselves as in their mutual relations: to compare the conclusions of Geology with the truths of Revelation; and to inquire if it be possible to accept the one and yet not to abandon the other. An uneasy apprehension has long prevailed among devout Christians, and a declared conviction among a large class of unbelievers, that the discoveries of Geology are at variance with the facts recorded in the Book of Genesis. Now, the historical narrative of Genesis lies at the very foundation of all Revealed Religion. Hence the science of Geology, has come to be looked on with suspicion by the simple-minded faithful, and to be hailed with joy, as a new and powerful auxiliary, by that infidel party which, in these latter days, has assumed a position so bold and defiant. It is now confidently asserted that we cannot uphold the teaching of Revelation, unless we shut our eyes to the evidence of Geology; and that we cannot pursue the study of Geology, if we are not prepared to renounce our belief in the doctrines of Revelation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science and the Bible: A Review of "the Six Days of Creation" Of Prof. Tayler Lewis The chemist reads Nature in another of her departments he watches the changes going on around him, and the changes which Nature, in her. Work, passes through in his laboratory. He thence learns not merely the absurdity of the ancient fancy that water, air, earth, and fire are elements, and not only that these are true elements, and that water is made of two, oxygen and hydrogen, and so each substance has its elemental constitution; but he goes further: he discovers, as his facts accumulate, that there is a law in these combi nations that oxygen and hydrogen, for example, unite only in certain ratios; that they exist in water in the ratio of 8 to 1 by weight; that, in another compound containing oxygen and iron, the ratio is 8 to 28; in another, containing oxygen and nitrogen, the ratio is 8 (oxygen) to 14 (nitrogen), or else, 8 to 28, 8 to 42, 8 to 56, 8 to 70, equivalent, in parts, to parts; and so, throughout Nature, in compounds of all kinds, he ascertains that the elements have their definite combining ratios, and combining weights; and thence he learns to calculate, with the utmost precision, the constitutions of compounds. Here then is a fundamental law of attraction, at the basis of chemistry, and upon it the science rests. It is a law of numbers and harmonic relations - the ordained will of God, which the chemical student has been enabled to apprehend, and is, now endeavoring to follow out into all of its beauti ful developments. No future research can revoke that will. The supposed elements may be resolved into others; but all matter, organic and inorganic, is constituted upon this law; and the law must stand, until the Being who said, So let it be, reverses all Nature and his own enactment.
