Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemical News and Journal of Industrial Science: With Which Is Incorporated the "Chemical Gazette," A Journal of Practical Chemistry in All Its Applications to Pharmacy, Arts, and Manufactures As regards the copper, it is not easy to see with great accuracy in such a case as this where one gramme of each metal was used; for that reason, and for one which I will presently mention, I feel inclined to attribute the milligramme difference to difficulty of observation; while the quantities of decimal silver solution also to reach the limit of precipitability required were as follows - a, 20 drops b, 22 drops; 0, 20 drops. I added of decimal solution of salt, a, 10 drops b, 11 drops; 9, 10 drops, The three solutions had been brought so perfectly to the point of neutrality that at first one single drop only of solution of silver appeared to be required; but this having been added, a drop of decimal solution of salt appeared necessary again. There may be con sequently a difference of half a drop. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemical News and Journal of Physical Science, 1889: With Which Is Incorporated the "Chemical Gazette"; A Journal of Practical Chemistry in All Its Applications to Pharmacy, Arts, and Manufactures; Volumes 59 and 60 Ultramarine by the Moist Way. - Dr. F. Knapp. The author has examined the preparation of ultramarine with silica alone, with alumina alone, or blue of the ultra marine type prepared with sodium salts or with calcium phosphate, the sodium sulphide, and the black precipitate extracted from it, and black sulphur, which he considers identical with the black sulphur of Magnus. In preparing ultramarine by the dry way sodium carbonate is added to the clay and the sulphur. Potassium carbonate cannot be used either in the dry or the wet process. There is no analogy between the two alkalies as regards the special properties of their sulphides. The sulphide obtained by fusing potassium carbonate with an excess of 11111e is devoid of that green shade observed in the corresponding sodium compound, but is of a pure reddish brown. If dis solved in water it deposits no black matter, and the solu tion is never green, but reddish brown. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of The Fingerprint Sourcebook originated during a meeting in April 2002. Individuals representing the fingerprint, academic, and scientific communities met in Chicago, Illinois, for a day and a half to discuss the state of fingerprint identification with a view toward the challenges raised by Daubert issues. The meeting was a joint project between the International Association for Identification (IAI) and West Virginia University (WVU). One recommendation that came out of that meeting was a suggestion to create a sourcebook for friction ridge examiners, that is, a single source of researched information regarding the subject. This sourcebook would provide educational, training, and research information for the international scientific community.
Book Synopsis The Chemical Industry in Europe, 1850–1914 by : Ernst Homburg
Download or read book The Chemical Industry in Europe, 1850–1914 written by Ernst Homburg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-10-31 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe is the cradle of the modem international chemical industry. From the middle of the nineteenth century until the outbreak of World War I, the European chemical industry influenced not only the production and control of science and technology, but also made significant contributions towards economic development, as well as bringing about profound changes in working and living enviromnents. It is a highly complex heritage, both rich and threatening, that calls for close scrutinity. Fortunately, a unique opportunity to explore the historical development of the European chemical industry from a variety of novel standpoints, was made possible during 1993 as part of the European Science Foundation (ESF) programme called 'The Evolution of Chemistry in Europe, 1789-1939.' This process of exploration has taken place through three workshops, each dealing with different time periods. The workshop concerned with the period 1850-1914, which corresponds roughly to the so-called Second Industrial Revolution, was held in Maastricht, The Netherlands, on 23-25 March 1995. This volume is the outcome of that workshop. The other workshops dealing with European chemical industry were held in Liege in 1994, covering the First Industrial Revolution period, 1789-1850, and Strasbourg in 1996, covering the period between the two World Wars.
Book Synopsis Hoosiers and the American Story by : Madison, James H.
Download or read book Hoosiers and the American Story written by Madison, James H. and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.
Book Synopsis On Their Own Terms by : Benjamin A. Elman
Download or read book On Their Own Terms written by Benjamin A. Elman and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In On Their Own Terms, Benjamin A. Elman offers a much-needed synthesis of early Chinese science during the Jesuit period (1600-1800) and the modern sciences as they evolved in China under Protestant influence (1840s-1900). By 1600 Europe was ahead of Asia in producing basic machines, such as clocks, levers, and pulleys, that would be necessary for the mechanization of agriculture and industry. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Elman shows, Europeans still sought from the Chinese their secrets of producing silk, fine textiles, and porcelain, as well as large-scale tea cultivation. Chinese literati borrowed in turn new algebraic notations of Hindu-Arabic origin, Tychonic cosmology, Euclidian geometry, and various computational advances. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, imperial reformers, early Republicans, Guomindang party cadres, and Chinese Communists have all prioritized science and technology. In this book, Elman gives a nuanced account of the ways in which native Chinese science evolved over four centuries, under the influence of both Jesuit and Protestant missionaries. In the end, he argues, the Chinese produced modern science on their own terms.
