Book excerpt: Swashbuckling and fearless, Ian Chappell epitomised Australian cricket in the 1970s. When he gave up the Test captaincy, he set out to salvage south Australian pride. Chappell's Last Stand zooms in on what was supposed to be the mercurial cricketer's last year as a player, when he went to war with administrators and took his state side from wooden spoon ignominy to shield glory. Described in vivid detail by ABC journalist Michael Sexton, Chappell's Last Stand investigates an astounding year of cricket from the perspectives of those who witnessed it first-hand. Illustrating the tenacity and cricketing genius of Ian Chappell, it provides unique insight into the rivalries, talents and tensions of a pivotal time in the sport, when the revolution of World Series Cricket was looming. Featuring interviews with the greats from the era - Ian and Greg Chappell, Dennis Lillee, the late Terry Jenner and David Hookes, Rod Marsh, Jeff Thomson, Ashley Mallett and many more.

Book excerpt: Greg Chappell was one of the greatest test cricketers of the post war era whose skill as a captain and batsman was without peer in the 1970s and 1980s. After his retirement he moved into coaching becoming the coach of Australian state side South Australia where he was worked with many of the current Australian test team on improving their game. In this book he expounds his theories on coaching, a radical approach where the techniques of cricket are a secondary issue compared to refining the core principles of movement of the body and organising yourself and your brain to best use the abilities that you have. His experience of working with people such as Australian Test bowler show that this techniques works and this book will be an invaluable aid not only to coaches but all players who can learn something from the basic premises laid out in the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The civil rights movement was arguably the most successful social movement in American history. In a provocative new assessment of its success, David Chappell argues that the story of civil rights is not a story of the ultimate triumph of liberal ideas after decades of gradual progress. Rather, it is a story of the power of religious tradition. Chappell reconsiders the intellectual roots of civil rights reform, showing how northern liberals' faith in the power of human reason to overcome prejudice was at odds with the movement's goal of immediate change. Even when liberals sincerely wanted change, they recognized that they could not necessarily inspire others to unite and fight for it. But the prophetic tradition of the Old Testament--sometimes translated into secular language--drove African American activists to unprecedented solidarity and self-sacrifice. Martin Luther King Jr., Fannie Lou Hamer, James Lawson, Modjeska Simkins, and other black leaders believed, as the Hebrew prophets believed, that they had to stand apart from society and instigate dramatic changes to force an unwilling world to abandon its sinful ways. Their impassioned campaign to stamp out "the sin of segregation" brought the vitality of a religious revival to their cause. Meanwhile, segregationists found little support within their white southern religious denominations. Although segregationists outvoted and outgunned black integrationists, the segregationists lost, Chappell concludes, largely because they did not have a religious commitment to their cause.

Book excerpt: 'I don't think anyone, apart from Don Bradman, is in the same class as Sachin Tendulkar.' -Shane Warne Readers are in love with Sachin Tendulkar's autobiography: 'A must read for anyone who knows cricket' ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 'An idol . . . An inspiration' ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 'A great book by one of the all time greats' ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 'Brings back so many wonderful memories'⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 'This book has made me feel proud to be a lover of the game and has inspired me to succeed in everything I do.' ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The story of the greatest cricket player of all time, told in his own words. __________ The greatest run-scorer in the history of cricket, Sachin Tendulkar retired in 2013 after an astonishing 24 years at the top. The most celebrated Indian cricketer of all time, he received the Bharat Ratna Award - India's highest civilian honour - on the day of his retirement. Now Sachin Tendulkar tells his own remarkable story - from his first Test cap at the age of 16 to his 100th international century and the emotional final farewell that brought his country to a standstill. When a boisterous Mumbai youngster's excess energies were channelled into cricket, the result was record-breaking schoolboy batting exploits that launched the career of a cricketing phenomenon. Before long Sachin Tendulkar was the cornerstone of India's batting line-up, his every move watched by a cricket-mad nation's devoted followers. Never has a cricketer been burdened with so many expectations; never has a cricketer performed at such a high level for so long and with such style - scoring more runs and making more centuries than any other player, in both Tests and one-day games. And perhaps only one cricketer could have brought together a shocked nation by defiantly scoring a Test century shortly after terrorist attacks rocked Mumbai. His many achievements with India include winning the World Cup and topping the world Test rankings. Yet he has also known his fair share of frustration and failure - from injuries and early World Cup exits to stinging criticism from the press, especially during his unhappy tenure as captain. Despite his celebrity status, Sachin Tendulkar has always remained a very private man, devoted to his family and his country. Now, for the first time, he provides a fascinating insight into his personal life and gives a frank and revealing account of a sporting life like no other. __________

Book excerpt: Eleven Gods and a Billion Indians goes deep into every Indian cricket tour since 1886—taking the reader backstage to when India played its first test in 1932, and bringing the story forward to the more contemporary IPL—to provide a complex and nuanced understanding of the evolution and maturity of the game. Equally, it comes with material that has have never entered the public domain so far—going behind the scenes of cases like Monkeygate, the suspension of Lalit Modi, spot-fixing, and the phase of judicial intervention. It carries not just reportage and analysis, but also player reminiscences, personal interviews, photographs and letters never known or discussed so far in Indian sporting discourse. Weaving together such material, Eleven Gods and a Billion Indians unflinchingly confronts questions that demand answering, among them: Has internal bickering impacted the on field performance of the Indian cricket team? Did some of our icons fail the country and the sport by trying to conceal important facts during the spot-fixing investigation? And does it matter to the ordinary fan who heads the BCCI as long as there is transparency and accountability in the system? In the end, in telling the story of the role of cricket in colonial and post-colonial Indian life, and the inter-relationship between those who patronize, promote, play and view the sport. Eleven Gods and a Billion Indians unravels the story of a nation now considered the financial nerve centre of world cricket.

Book excerpt: This collection of humorous and satiric verse takes its title from that thoroughly southern term meaning irreverent retort, ironic remark, or scoffing observation. The ancient Roman poet Juvenal noted that his world made it hard not to write satire. Fred Chappell, finding his contemporary era analogous to that of imperial Rome, has in Backsass given in to the impulse for invective and mockery. The aim of satirists is to improve the moral tenor of society, and they approach this goal by first causing us to laugh at ourselves. Brandishing his lexical sword, Chappell ribs our shortcomings, offers tonic advice, and occasionally sheds a tear for our fallen ideals. Some poetry is fine wine. Backsass is the driest of martinis.

Book excerpt: A sweeping history of the years after Martin Luther King’s assassination—and the struggle to keep the civil rights movement alive and realize King’s vision of an equal society “The previously untold story of continuing struggle and posthumous inspiration that dominates this compelling and groundbreaking book will forever change the way civil rights historians view this era.”—Raymond Arsenault, author of Freedom Riders In this arresting and groundbreaking account, David L. Chappell reveals that, far from coming to an abrupt end with King’s murder, the civil rights movement entered a new phase. It both grew and splintered. These were years when decisive, historic victories were no longer within reach—the movement’s achievements were instead hard-won, and their meanings unsettled. From the fight to pass the Fair Housing Act in 1968, to debates over unity and leadership at the National Black Political Conventions, to the campaign for full-employment legislation, to the surprising enactment of the Martin Luther King holiday, to Jesse Jackson’s quixotic presidential campaigns, veterans of the movement struggled to rally around common goals. Waking from the Dream documents this struggle, including moments when the movement seemed on the verge of dissolution, and the monumental efforts of its members to persevere. For this watershed study of a much-neglected period, Chappell spent ten years sifting through a voluminous public record: congressional hearings and government documents; the archives of pro– and anti–civil rights activists, oral and written remembrances of King’s successors and rivals, documentary film footage, and long-forgotten coverage of events from African American newspapers and journals. The result is a story rich with period detail, as Chappell chronicles the difficulties the movement encountered while working to build coalitions, pass legislation, and mobilize citizens in the absence of King’s galvanizing leadership. Could the civil rights coalition stay together as its focus shifted from public protests to congressional politics? Did the movement need a single, charismatic leader to succeed King, and who would that be? As the movement’s leaders pushed forward, they continually looked back, struggling to define King’s legacy and harness his symbolic power. Waking from the Dream is a revealing and resonant look at civil rights after King as well as King’s place in American memory. It illuminates a time, explores a cause, and explains how a movement labored to overcome the loss of its leader.

Book excerpt: Australia's fifth Golden Age began following the defeat of the West Indies in 1995 by Mark Taylor's team, but the seeds had been laid a few years before... In A Golden Age, universally respected commentator and former Australian cricket captain Ian Chappell brings together a collection of his articles written on the Australian cricket team and their international opponents over the last 20 years. From the late 1980s to the present day, Ian has witnessed the development of an extraordinarily successful Australian team, so successful in fact that he sees them representing a fifth Golden Age of Australian cricket. In this collection he charts their rise, and expertly examines the defining styles of the world's cricket captains and their teams, as well as controversial issues such as match-fixing, and the impact of technology on the game. As a perceptive commentator Ian's views and opinions are injected with the same honesty and directness that characterised his playing days. Written with inimitable passion and flair, he gives us a taste of some of the best cricket played around the world in the past two decades and shows us exactly why Australia has proved so dominant in this era.

Book excerpt: Imagine five of the world's greatest players lining up for a domestic one-day game at the WACA Ground in Perth in December, 1976. Then, imagine the team that bats first being bowled out for just 77 runs. Finally, let your imagination take you through what was a devastatingly effective spell by fastbowling great Dennis Lillee leading his team to what appeared to be an unwinnable victory - having claimed Viv Richards and Greg Chappell for just two runs between them! "Make 'em fight for it, be buggered a we're going to beat these bastards!" - Dennis Lillee said before going out to spearhead the 'impossible' win. Such a feat has never been repeated since in domestic first-class cricket. Years later Viv Richards' commented, "Do I remember that game? It's never far from the mind, man." Through one electric game -unsurprisingly dubbed 'The Miracle Match' -, which he himself took part in, author Ian Brayshaw tells the story of some of the greatest players of Australian and international cricket in the 1970s. The Miracle Match is a nostalgic look at the game in a bygone era that will touch the hearts of cricket fans young and old.

Book excerpt: What is it about the Australian cricket team that has propelled them to the top of world cricket? Australia's win in the 1987 World Cup in India surprised the cricketing world. There were so few expectations placed on the event that the ABC didn't even send a commentary team. But what was the factor that made this team special? Was it the Waugh factor? Why have the Australians been able to dominate the world game? From his long-term vantage point as writer and commentator Roebuck is able not only to paint vivid match-by-match pictures of numerous successes and occasional failures but also to analyse the mental and tactical strength which inspired the long-term success of the Australian team. He puts the last three decades under the microscope, as he looks at the contribution Boon and Border, Waugh and Warnie, McGrath and Gilchrist and many others, have made to the Australian supremacy. From the era of the Chappells and the early days of World Series Cricket to the best Ashes series ever, Roebuck casts his eye over both the hubris and the hurly burly of Australian cricket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory account of the nouvelle thŽologie, a clerical movement that revitalized the Catholic ChurchÕs role in twentieth-century French political life. Secularism has been a cornerstone of French political culture since 1905, when the republic formalized the separation of church and state. At times the barrier of secularism has seemed impenetrable, stifling religious actors wishing to take part in political life. Yet in other instances, secularism has actually nurtured movements of the faithful. Soldiers of God in a Secular World explores one such case, that of the nouvelle thŽologie, or new theology. Developed in the interwar years by Jesuits and Dominicans, the nouvelle thŽologie reimagined the ChurchÕs relationship to public life, encouraging political activism, engaging with secular philosophy, and inspiring doctrinal changes adopted by the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s. Nouveaux thŽologiens charted a path between the old alliance of throne and altar and secularismÕs demand for the privatization of religion. Envisioning a Church in but not of the public sphere, Catholic thinkers drew on theological principles to intervene in political questions while claiming to remain at armÕs length from politics proper. Sarah Shortall argues that this Òcounter-politicsÓ was central to the mission of the nouveaux thŽologiens: by recoding political statements in the ostensibly apolitical language of doctrine, priests were able to enter into debates over fascism and communism, democracy and human rights, colonialism and nuclear war. This approach found its highest expression during the Second World War, when the nouveaux thŽologiens led the spiritual resistance against Nazism. Claiming a powerful public voice, they collectively forged a new role for the Church amid the momentous political shifts of the twentieth century.
