The hunger and thirst for the living God is an impressive and triumphant fact. When France entered on the war she had no chap lains attached either to Navy or Army. The Administration made no provision for the religious aspirations of her fighting men. But the significant fact is that before the campaign was four months old, the appeal for Padres was so strong that it had to be met. The Comtesse de Courson is author ity for the statement that to-day France has over twenty thousand priests serving in various capacities, and that all her battleships and armies have their chaplains. In a struggle like the present there is need for the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Memories of an Army Chaplain Many books about the American Civil War have been written to show the movements of the armies and the characteristics of personal commanders. Little, however, has been written to show the thoughts and feelings of the soldier in active army service. The standpoint of a regimental chaplain gives him the opportunity to speak on this subject with peculiar acquaintance and sympathy. The subject deserves an abler pen, more con Sideration and time than I can bestow upon it. I have written these pages in hours, and half-hours, snatched from my Official duties, which frequently demanded my attention, and SO engrossed my thoughts that it became difficult to bring them back to the work on hand. It was labeled as the foundation of evil and the source of ruin. The number of references to gaming in the docu ments of the time indicate that it was a widespread vice, perhaps even more so than drinking. Since the troops seldom got paid on time and, more often than not, never got paid at all - one cannot help wondering what they gambled with. It appears that they found some medium of exchange, because the problem was never fully solved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Pictures: Experiences and Observations of a Chaplain in the U. S. Army, in the War of the Southern Rebellion The War of the Southern Rebellion is destined to create a Literature of its own. Its history will be written by many hands, while its incidents and leading characteristics, above all the principles involved in it, will supply themes for discussion for a long time to come. The material for all reliable accounts of this great struggle must be furnished, in no small degree, by the testimony of eye - witnesses. In that view, I flatter myself that what I here offer to the public will have some value as contributions to the history hereafter to be written. Mere exposure to the sources of knowledge will not suffice. The learning process involves study, in struction, observation, and experience but many are subjected to all these but do not learn. Learning how to learn is a process of self-discipline involving the whole person including his interest, aptitudes, attitudes, and commitments. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 25: March-April, 1968 Most people now think of war as a man-made evil contrary to God's will. The ancients had the reverse View; they believed that war was God's will. Conscience operated in the opposite direction to our own, with the result that when men had vindictive and bestial impulses it was because the deity meant them to do the things these impulses resulted in. The ancient soldier (whose morale problems were rendered far more acute by primitive conditions) tended to unleash all his frustrations and fears in a savage violence spurred by the belief he was doing the deity's work. Great imperial cities such as Boghazkoy, Nineveh, Babylon, could disappear and remain undiscovered for centuries, but a Hiroshima now rises again quickly. I would rather take my chances with a nuclear icbm any day in the week than with an Assyrian conqueror. Not even our two global wars of this century can quite equal the ferocity of ancient hordes coming down like the wolf on the fold, burning, torturing, killing, utterly obliterating everything in the way. Our own Old Testament has horrifying re ections of that spirit in such passages as Joshua or the last verse of Psalm 137. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 31 The Navy has proposed a reduction of 35 of its flag officers in 1974, 75 and 76. Twenty-six of these would be from the Unrestricted Line, three from the Restricted Line and six from the Staff Corps. One of the latter reductions would be from the Chaplain Corps, leaving a single Rear Admiral among approximately 860 chaplains. Chaplaincy committees and executives of several major religious bodies have expressed concern to the Secretary of the Navy regarding the wisdom and rationale for includ ing the chaplaincy in this proposed reduction. The chap lainey in each of the military services has had two generals Or admirals on active duty for many years. They have not contributed to the great inflation of general and flag officers in other areas. It is interesting to note that the Army and Air Force recently selected new brigadier generals to be assigned as Deputy Chiefs of Chaplains. Only the Navy proposes to move in the opposite direction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Chaplain The manuscript for this little work was written soon after William's death, but for many reasons was not printed at that time. Although years have passed, his friends still feel that to have the story of his short life before them in print will tend to strengthen and comfort their still sorrowing hearts; that the words he has spoken, the self-sacrificing spirit he manifested in defense of his country, and, more than all, his earnestness, zeal, and fidelity in the cause of his Divine Master, may stir their hearts - influencing them more and more to live as he lived, so far as he followed Christ, thus becoming more and more ready to die as he died, calmly, believing, trusting, saying as he said, "Now, if it be the will of God." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Military Chaplains' Review: Summer 1992; Pluralism and Minority Issues My last issue as editor. These four years have passed quickly. Since coming to this job in the summer of 1988 and taking over from Chaplain William Noble, some significant things have occurred. It was an exciting time to be an editor. Many of you in the units went off to Panama and Saudi Arabia during this time. Thanks to your fine writing we were able to publish two issues of this magazine describing the kinds of ministry chaplains provide in battle. The transition to a smaller Army began, was interrupted by the Gulf War, and then resumed in earnest. We produced the Transition issue in the Winter of 1991 to shed some light on that. The Chief of Chaplains ordered it reprinted in early 1992 to send it to you once again. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
