Book excerpt: From the dense woods of the Appalachian Mountains comes this true tale of deception, murder, and greed in a tiny West Virginia town. M. M. Stoddart returns to the scene of the decades-old murders of Glenn Roberts and his teenaged son, Timothy, to conduct a new investigation of the biggest homicide case in Tucker County history-one shrouded by suspicion and doubt for more than twenty years. Glenn and Timothy were killed by near-contact shotgun blasts from the same weapon on the same night. But their bodies were found eight miles and three weeks apart. Stoddart reopens the cold case, and soon finds that the murders were much more than a simple botched robbery, as West Virginia authorities had previously concluded. New information uncovers a vast web of missing evidence, deceit, and family intrigue. Set in an impoverished mountain community in the early 1980s, this shocking and compelling story exposes the tragedy of wrongful conviction and the true meaning of justice.

Book excerpt: In two classic mysteries, an English teacher by profession discovers that sleuthing—of the strictly amateur variety—may be where her truest passions lie. J. S. Borthwick’s debut novel, The Case of the Hook-Billed Kites, takes Sarah Deane, still a grad student at this point, out of her natural New England habitat and into the wilds of Texas, where her maybe-boyfriend is keen on a spot of birdwatching. But birds are not all that she spies through her binoculars, and so the adventures begin. In The Down East Murders, Sarah is glad to be back on home ground, but somebody, it appears, is not happy in any way at all, and Sarah is forced (and secretly thrilled) to put her newfound detecting skills to use again. Praise for the first two mysteries featuring Sarah Deane “Miss Borthwick has a keen eye and a sharp pen.” —The New York Times “Borthwick . . . has the right stuff.” —The Washington Post Book World “A top-notch mystery that also gives the smell of the sea fresh in your face.” —The Houston Post “Very much in the Christie tradition . . . will challenge the wits of the most veteran of armchair detectives!” —Library Journal “Witty, appealing, and thoroughly delightful . . . an ingenious, richly satisfying mixture of the classic elements of a murder mystery.” —Mystery News

Book excerpt: The Torreon Cabin Murders in December of 1995 was one of the most heinous cases in the history of the state of New Mexico. A young man and his live-in girl friend were murdered execution style in a cabin in Cibola National Forest near a small town called Torreon. Her two young sons were then locked in the cabin to die of starvation and dehydration by the murderer. Later, the young man's father discovered the bodies and New Mexico State Police and a gang detective from the Albuquerque Police Department were assigned to investigate the four deaths. No crime scene team was sent to the cabin to look for evidence, according to the author. Investigators came up with prime suspects and with the guidance of the District Attorney's office took numerous statements from two of them until they were able to obtain what appeared to some to be false confessions. Three young men were eventually charged with the death penalty. But was the real killer in the Torreon cabin murders released on the public to continue his crimes? Let the reader decide.

Book excerpt: "A strange, wild story it is too, and perhaps worth the telling, if only for the reason that the stage on which it was enacted has so completely changed that the scenes in which the adventurer took his part, and the life he led in the far West and South, can never recur as long as the world endures. Civilisation, railways, and the advancing tide of population have swept them into the linbo of forgotten things so completely that it is hard to realise that such a state of society could ever really have existed only forty or fifty years ago." ~ from the introduction.

Book excerpt: "[A] fascinating account of the twisted threads of murder, ethnic violence and mob justice in 19th century Southern California." —Jill Leovy, author of Ghettoside: A History of Murder in America, in the Los Angeles Times Los Angeles is a city founded on blood. Once a small Mexican pueblo teeming with Californios, Indians, and Americans, all armed with Bowie knives and Colt revolvers, it was among the most murderous locales in the Californian frontier. In Eternity Street: Violence and Justice in Frontier Los Angeles, "a vivid, disturbing portrait of early Los Angeles" (Publishers Weekly), John Mack Faragher weaves a riveting narrative of murder and mayhem, featuring a cast of colorful characters vying for their piece of the city. These include a newspaper editor advocating for lynch laws to enact a crude manner of racial justice and a mob of Latinos preparing to ransack a county jail and murder a Texan outlaw. In this "groundbreaking" (True West) look at American history, Faragher shows us how the City of Angels went from a lawless outpost to the sprawling metropolis it is today.

Book excerpt: ***Please note: This ebook edition does not contain the photos found in the print edition.*** A stunning actress-model disappears without a word...A frantic search ends in tragedy...A slick photographer accused of her murder... It seemed as if all of Linda Sobek's dreams of stardom were coming true. But on the day the sexy calendar model and former NFL cheerleader missed a fitting for her first TV role, her family knew something terrible had happened to their golden girl. For eight days, police held out little hope of finding the 27-year-old beauty alive. Then the crucial clues came: photographs of Linda along with a crumpled page from her appointment book were discovered in a highway dumpster. Hours later, they were led to Linda's shallow grave deep in California's Angeles Forest. The clues near the crime scene linked the murder to Charles Rathbun, a talented, sought-after commercial photographer, who claimed he'd accidentally run Linda over in a car during a photo shoot. Police speculated that Linda may not have been the first pretty woman the strapping Rathbun had taken into Angeles Forest who didn't come out alive. But he has not been charged in any of those cases. Clifford L. Linedecker's Death of a Model tells the heartbreaking story of a promising young star.

Yet unsolved child murders are almost a daily occurrence--of nearly 52,000 juvenile homicides between 1980 and 2008, more than 20 percent remain open. Drawing on FBI reports, police and court records, and interviews with victims' families, this book provides details and evidence for 18 unsolved cases from 1956 to 1998.

Book excerpt: This brief fills a gap in the studies of organized crime in Mexico (Kan 2012, Ríos 2011, Dell 2011) by documenting and mapping the post-2008 assassination of Mexican border police chiefs. It traces out a “systematic” of law-enforcement assassination in Northern Tier Mexico, showing how the selective, often sequential, hits by cartels on chiefs in border towns and along key drug-trafficking corridors has proven an effective strategy by organized crime elements to serve several goals: (1) to retaliate for federal, state and local prosecution, (2) to try and neutralize police chiefs, (3) to achieve intermittent local governance and/or to seed corrupt police chiefs at the municipal level, and, (4) to reduce local governmental capacity to obtain greater freedom for movement of goods. It is argued that the tactical advantage of organized crime elements gives them relatively easy physical access to law enforcement targets and thus is thus one prime element facilitating the use of assassination as a strategy. U.S. and Mexican legal, political and judicial institutions have not been able to adequately restrict opportunity for law-enforcement assassinations. The inability to reduce access to weapons and officials, to increase security for police personnel, to reduce corruption and punish offenders sets the stage for the assassination of local law enforcement. Yet, it is the goals of organized crime elements (to clear drug-smuggling routes and to try and gain more pliant governance at the municipal level) that ultimately motivate such killings.

Book excerpt: “Food lore, a good puzzle, an exciting climax and cats with their therapeutic purring all add to the fun” as a PI goes undercover as a plus-size model (Publishers Weekly). In a world where stick-thin women adorn fashion magazines and silver screens, plus-sized private eye Savannah Reid is grateful for the wild success—and fabulous fashion tips—of full-figured model Cait Connor. When Cait is found dead after months of extreme dieting, everyone assumes the risky regimen did her in. But then a second full-figured model meets an untimely end, and it’s time to weigh the facts . . . and search for suspects. At first it seems that Cait’s death is a clear case of dieting run amok. As the new spokesperson for Wentworth’s Slenda Flakes, Cait needed to lose thirty pounds in sixty days and apparently died trying. It all seems cut and dried until Kameeka Wills, another plus-size model working—and starving—for Wentworth, is killed by a hit-and-run driver while jogging at four a.m. Now Savannah’s really suspicious, and determined to avenge her curvaceous sisters . . . even if it means going undercover for the camera. There are more models on the Slenda Flakes campaign who could be at risk, and enough suspects to keep Savannah hopping. But she’s determined to satisfy her craving for justice—before a cunning killer strikes again . . .
